Making ‘New Zealand’ country’s official name added to NZ First’s ever-changing list of bills
New Zealand First’s stack of publicly announced Member’s Bills has grown yet again, with the party today proposing legislation to make “New Zealand” the official name of the country in law.
The legislation – which still needs to be picked from the ballot of Member’s Bills – comes in response to the party’s unease over the use of “Aotearoa”, including in Parliament.
“The vast majority of New Zealanders are shocked at this insidious creep of misguided and misinformed cultural history of the name ‘Aotearoa’,” leader Winston Peters said on Friday.

Winston actually thinks we are all stupid and can’t see his end game! Winston, New Zealand is a DUTCH name, although Abel Tasman never ever set foot on NZ soil so Aotearoa is way more appropriate. When the settlers arrived, NZ was occupied and under the control of Maori, until George Grey, in Dec 1863 during his second tenure, confiscated/stole their land and pushed Maori to below Te Kuiti – they now only own about 5.5% of NZ land!! I truly can’t comprehend how you can give the middle finger to your ancestors – it’s something I could never do. I am proud of my Scottish/English ancestry but I have the greatest respect for our indigenous Maori. I grew up in Orakei, easy to read word, and so enjoyed the interaction with my school mates from the local Ngati Whatua marae. I also have some Peters in my English family tree! This is yet another glaring example of the Luxon “Great Pretender” cohort. How can you sink so low? Shame on you for selling your soul to the devil.

The SW Pacific Basin is the name marked on charts for the sea off the East coast of Aotearoa. Sounds like something you would wash your hands in.
Winston Peters is busily renaming things, why not ‘the Gulf of New Zealand’ Trump did it for the Gulf of Mexico. ‘Gulf of New Zealand’ it’s about as silly as naming the ocean off our west coast after a Dutch imperialist and an entire country after his tiny home province.

Naming things in Aotearoa after foreigners who never lived here but claimed Aotearoa as their possesion is colonial obsequious forelock tugging of the worst kind, about as subservient and shameful as renaming Te Ika a Māui and Te Waipounamu as Trump North and Trump South today.
