Housing is getting worse under National, as fewer public homes are built and thousands of jobs are lost in construction.
“In just two years under Christopher Luxon, New Zealand has gone from having 71 construction companies building 3,412 public homes, to just 28 companies building only 488 homes,” Labour housing spokesperson Kieran McAnulty said.
“The lack of building is contributing to a huge slowdown in construction, with 18,000 job losses in just over 18 months. Many people working in construction are now having to look overseas for work that should be available here.
“Christopher Luxon’s Government isn’t just building fewer houses – he is making it harder to access emergency housing. More and more people are being forced to live on the street, in tents and cars because of his decisions.
“Last time National were in Government they sold off the public housing stock, this time they’re also failing to build homes and tanking the construction industry at the same time,” Kieran McAnulty said.
