You might argue that NZ needs jobs and that we still need oil and gas to keep our economy stable because renewables are woke.
Now, I think that position is bullshit because oil and gas can’t be part of any future because catastrophic climate change is a reality, the 2% royalties are a joke and that investment needs to go into making NZ 100% renewable instead of more oil and gas, but EVEN IF you make the argument for jobs and supplementing our energy needs – why the fuck would you still agree with what Shane Jones did?

Previously Labour had passed law that said if you are the licence holder, you can’t on-sell that licence near the end of the field so as to avoid the pollution clean up costs once you have taken all the oil.
This exact thing happened during the Tui Oil Field debacle where NZ Taxpayers were left with a $300million clean up cost!

Why allow an oil company to take our oil, pay us a pittance in royalties and then fucking stiff us with the pollution clean up costs?

Are you aware how many years it has been since a viable gas field has been discovered in NZ territory? There’s an expensive difference between exploring for and finding gas/oil which is the main reason that very little exploration was being done. The Labour rules prevented new blocks being available but the gas/oil industry still had existing areas that they could test.

I saw a graph the other day which showed oil companies are still drilling in existing fields for development and extraction .It also pointed out no new finds in the last 25 years at least .Jones also pushes the myth of a massive field off the coast of otago/southland .I remember a rig drilling there in the early part of this century with no resulting find of this massive gas field .Also there was no rush to get back and drill more holes before the ban .Alot of exploration companies handed in their licenses long before any ban came into effect .The oil/gas industry has not shut down as you have been told they are just facing the reality that the golden goose has laid its last egg .The $200 million would be better spent on a new wind/solar farm or battery complex near one of our main cities .
