Unemployment: Construction jobs down more than 12,000 in a year, more youth out of work

It may be a case of “last in, first out” for many young workers.

And it’s increasingly hard to get back into employment once you’re out, Westpac senior economist Michael Gordon said after the release of new job data.

Stats NZ employment indicators today showed construction and manufacturing lost more than 18,000 filled jobs in a year.

And filled jobs for people aged 15 to 19 years were down 10% year-on-year.

Gordon said the latest data confirmed how much the economy had changed since the tight labour market of two or three years ago.

758 construction businesses have gone into liquidation in the last 12 months, thanks in part to the Government’s freeze on transport, housing and hospital investment spending at the beginning of 2024, Centrix reported this morning. Construction jobs have fallen by 12,723 in the last year!

Worker and employer expectations of real wage deflation are worsening as the economy slides back into a mid-year stagnation, and as administered prices such as Government and council fees and rates rise faster than inflation, as do prices in the monopoly-bound food, insurance and electricity sectors.

…ouch.

    • Yea boy its all starting to turn to shit and the PM is seeing NZ is a society not a business and a growing proportion of that society are getting a bit pissed off with his weakness at controlling his two feral side kicks .Although as a bible basher he is loving the race hatred they are playing .You know by Maori for the pakeha master doners.

  2. The problem is, in this new age algorithms rule over reason, logic and the ability to construct a coherent argument.
    Supporters of this government ‘know’ that everything bad happening now is the fault of Jacinda, and Robertson and maori wanting co-governance. They ‘know’ this government has had no choice but to ‘repair the damage’ caused by Labour.
    The sad new reality we live in.

    • A shame they don’t ‘know’ as much about algorithms and manipulation of social media, logic and reasoning, critical thinking and, and, and…
      It’s so much easier to ‘know’ that Jacinda was all wrong, she must be, she’s a young woman and what do they know compared to blokes?

    • Agreed Gordon we could see it would all turn to shit even before election night 2023.
      The right wing has always been full of rotten gas and always left behind destruction in my 51 years of voting with no exceptions. Nothing the right say can be proved otherwise.

During the land confiscation wars in the 1860s a small number of Maori joined forces with the english land thieves, hoping they would be rewarded by getting some of the stolen land for them selves .Peters ,jones ,Seymour ,Potaka ,and a few others in this government are the modern day equivalent of those people .They lead the ANTI Maori charge at the request of their white masters .Winston gets A LIFETIME supply of tobacco jones get deasil and free kia for ever and Seymour gets free reign at race baiting all allowed by a weak as piss PM .

  5. Got to agree with Killer, can’t for the life of me see how being woke or not, vaccinated or not has any bearing on our economic fortunes. We’ve swapped Cindies “kind” neo liberalism with Luxflakes cold corporate neo liberalism. Either way it’s killing the poor, woke or non woke, based or not.

    kwtc ‘What a pity that you weren’t in a position of power and unlike Ardern you would have created such a dust that resulted in ‘lay’em’ rather than ‘mayhem’.
