The Editor doesn’t moderate this blog,  3 volunteers do, they are very lenient to provide you a free speech space but if it’s just deranged abuse or putting words in bloggers mouths to have a pointless argument, we don’t bother publishing.

All in all, TDB gives punters a very, very, very wide space to comment in but we won’t bother with out right lies or gleeful malice. We leave that to the Herald comment section.

    The Deloitte State of the City analysis was no surprise to anyone who has watched successive governments treat the city as a problem to manage, rather than an engine to fuel….[a sinkhole?].

    Primate city – what?
    Isn’t this delightful, a predator corporate growing its own goats so it doesn’t have to roam to find prey.

  2. The recent post on listening to experts has not done much for understanding the way forward in education. I will put this here and try and be more respectful of our good bloggers in future and hope to see better discussions than turned out there.

    It seems that we are ranked beside other countries. Why don’t we decide what we want, to match the purposes we educate for, and make sure that our own system meets our needs and encourages learning of all the children? Open plan classrooms is going out of fashion. It should never have become automatic.

    Children with different speeds of learning need to be separated for some classes I think. There are some who find it hard to concentrate, and may have to learn partly through reading and partly discussion on the set reading piece along with others. Everyone should come up with something and then explain why they think it is a good point. It encourages interest and joined-up thinking. I have found in the charitable groups I have helped in that there might be little original thinking – ask for ideas and there are none to come forward.

    Getting some school pupils more involved with real materials instead of just words on a page would make a difference. That might be regarded as a better approach for learning skills, rather than adopting open plan because it is being done somewhere else. Think, learn, practice how to do social things, how to apologise etc the use of words and ways showing ‘manners’ is so important in getting on with others.

    Part of education’s purpose used to include socialisation, I don’t know if it still does. Some day you may have to talk your way out of danger, wrongful blame or think your way out of personal depression. Learning to be interested in others, lightly pleasant, respectful and thankful can take one further than being crammed full of knowledge yet reticent or taciturn. Also I see some parents not modelling respectful, pleasant behaviour and likely encouraging complacency and self-centredness.
