Local democracy under threat? Officials warn against removing council ‘four wellbeings’
Removing the “four wellbeings” for councils is unlikely to make much difference, and could even impact services and development, officials’ analysis of the government’s law changes shows.
The report shows the approach taken by the government can be expected to overall improve clarity and concerns about spending “beyond core infrastructure” – but would undermine stability and localism.

You have to hand it to the Political Right, they have been able to mask their legislative regime of deregulation for their donors interests behind culture war grievance and blaming Jacinda on the economy falling and most Kiwis have believed them.
Through their astroturf Taxpayers’ Union stable of clients, the Political Right can draw on disgruntled voters with social media hate algorithms that always generate maxine damage.
The new class of alpha politician, those who were lobbyists before getting elected, have manage to make a beeline towards implanting their former employees interests.
After loading local council up with user pays costs, the new trick now is to attack local councils and claim those costs central government have imposed are really frivolous council spending on nice to haves.
Are Kiwis dumb enough to be tricked by this?
Let’s find out.
The reason we have a vast under investment in water infrastructure and physical infrastructure is because Local Government won’t upgrade a system put under immense stress by Central Government’s open door immigration policy and low wage economy addiction.
Suburban home owners are fine with this mass immigration policy and infrastructure gridlock because it pushes up the untaxed house valuations they have gotten used to gaining year in and year out.
Neither Central Government nor Local Government want to have an honest discussion with voters about higher water rates and higher taxes.
Someone has to come up with the $150billion over the next 30 years to keep up with the expected population growth from the mass immigration policies of both Labour and National.
ACT and National point to the labour shortage pain crippling our economy and pretend importing cheaper labour is the solution when that was the problem in the first place!
We are addicted to hyper tourism, property speculation and a low wage economy by using international labour flows.
We have become so blinded by free market mythology we refuse to acknowledge short sighted lazy immigration and a user pays view of essential services has caused the issues we have now!
We are addicted to a low cost labour force and force our domestically trained teachers, nurses and Drs offshore to repay the student loans we saddle them with!
The bitter harvest of user pays is biting us now and all the right have to offer as a solution is more cheap labour, crippling public transport and an extension of user pays!
Congestion charges and Tolls are a means to privatise the roads so that only the wealthy can afford to drive on them.
Without massive investment in free public transport, putting in privatisation models that create a gated community user pays culture over roads the taxpayer has paid many times over for is a political crime against the poor!
The rise in your rates is generated by the Government’s privatisation agenda, dismantling council isn’t the solutions you fools, funding them properly is!
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

And on it goes .The attempt to shut down the treaty has failed ,so now we will attack women in the work force ,eliminate work place safety ,shut down the construction industry and now we are going after local councils because they have not built enough pipes and roads for the property developer to exploit .In the mean time we will just slip another 100000 unemployed people into the country calling them students at the same time as we are closing polytechs and under funding the Universities these fake students are supposed to attend .They will be competing with the 200000 on main benefit for the 200000 jobs that done exist .Already we hear of up to 1000 people applying for a single job .Sadly a large proportion of the 100000 will neither be educated or employed for a full 0 hour week .However some will be exploited by their fellow country men and will be subject to abuse and poverty .
WE have at least moved on from Maori bashing to pakeha council bashing .And guess what those white fellas dont like it eh.
The party’s over Turkeys. Christmas is coming. When the bulk of non tradable inflation is coming from local government you have a problem. It would be OK is money is being spent on assets. It isn’t.
Bullshit Frank. The central government has driven the problem by washing their hands (no doubt with nitrate filled water in some regions) of any solution. To hear the screeching idiot Willis go on about candy and babies is vomit inducing.
What’s a vanity project? Is it like a Ministry of Regulation or a Productivity Commission?
Or Charter Schools?
This is all part of the same scheme. You can’t have dissenting local voices when you’re trying to establish a dictatorship.
Well people should know by now what sort of a government they are going to get at the next election as the bald one has already said he supports privatisation of our public education and health systems. If they want this then they will vote for it. In the meantime, the government is beating up on the local council, blaming our last government for overspending (during covid) and compromising our environments while at the same time rewarding their big wealthy funders.
We will see Ada, our economy is not doing very well, many people are struggling to pay the bills and many have left. And why is our PM getting his knickers is such a knot over being called out over his parties ECE policy, not delivering as promised. And why would Labour release their policies now when the election is 14 months away. Nah! that would be dumb to show your cards now, better to do the mahi and be ready come election time to get rid of the clowns ruining our country.
Wont be many quality people standing for election at the up coming local body elections will there .Why would you put your head on the block while these cunts are in government .
“Willis said it was fair to expect councils to do the same cost reduction as central government.”
The NZ economy is already struggling and further falls to domestic demand will lead to more unemployment and business closures. The forecasts for the June quarter are already recessionary.
This could have really bad economic outcomes for jobs and growth.
Honestly, to be honest, I think they are AI beginners Ada. Get something novel.
Toilets are needed for people, and especially tourists. Bike lanes have been promoted for weaning us off petrol, and because it’s trendy and appeals to middle-class Greens; they are also needed for pregnant mothers about to drop. and as ambulances are less funded, needed for patient rickshaws, impatient to get to ED. MMP gets blamed for being the right thing in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was meant to enable people to see their votes counted for something. But neoliberalism came along and stymied any good it could have done.
The only unnecessary burdensome thing around is the right wing political parties that we definitely can’t afford – if they aren’t bleeding us dry then they have some mate that charges us for standing 5 minutes on a space in the street that they have bought ,and are moving us on or defoliating us despite us saying ‘Leaf us alone’.
