NZME journalists were so offended that Chippy’s explanation for falling ramraids were tied to the racist crime porn clickbait garbage NZME publishes that they have surged in reporting about it…
Who can claim credit for the dramatic reduction in ram raids? – Audrey Young
After Labour leader Chris Hipkins dropped his clanger recently claiming ram-raids were being covered up by the “Tory” media to help the current Government, it was clear what he should have said.
Or at least could have said. That is, the dramatic drop in ram-raids is the result of interventions set up by Labour before it left office in November 2023.
Of course, National disputes that and claims it has created an environment in which criminal offending is being more comprehensively addressed.
…I appreciate and fully acknowledge seeing children commit organised crime like this is genuinely concerning to the wider community.
But I beg us all to take a deep breath, appreciate the uniqueness of this moment and the extreme pressure on so many people right now.
I’ve said from the beginning that Covid is a triple peaked crisis, the first was the physical impact on physical health, the second was the economic impact and the third was the impact on mental health.
Human Beings are social creatures, the worst punishment is isolation – we’ve all gone through a unique universal experience and it’s damaged many.
The real reasons ramraids fell was because Covid ended and Labour put in the resource to deal with them, they didn’t come down because of National’s draconian ‘get tough on crime’ bullshit…
Numbers of repeat serious young offenders are dropping – and no one knows why
-
- The Government has set a target for a 15% reduction in the number of serious and persistent young offenders by the end of 2029.
- Documents released to the Herald show a rising annual trend in the number of these offenders for three and a half years, but it has now reversed for consecutive months.
- Most of the Government’s cornerstone policies on this issue are yet to be implemented, while one that ministers are exploring is raising concern: ‘more punitive measures for recidivist families’.
…Ramraids were falling BEFORE National’s draconian policies began.
NZME can’t see that because so much of their profit margin is built upon crime porn clickbait, National don’t want to admit the numbers were falling before their policies kicked in and Labour seem so timid in standing up for policy that was focused wrap around services rather than bashing kids that they don’t comment.
We don’t have a youth problem in NZ, we have an adult problem, we hate young people and when they malfunction because society is malfunctioning we want to blame them rather than the society they grew up in.
That’s the real tragedy behind the ramraids, they were a symptom of a much deeper malaise but our fear and anger refuse to acknowledge that, because thinking about crime is considered ‘soft’ where as ‘feeling’ about crime is the only legitimate response.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

May be ramraids dropped after the election because the media stopped advertising the latest coolest way to do a robbery.
Yes and because it stopped trending on Tik Tok .
the media stopped repoting ram raids to make Luxon feel good about boot camps which had not even started .Now he thinks he just has to get the media to print his latest stupid idea and the problem will go away without having to actually do anything physical .

As a boomer I think Martin is right .We dont have a youth problem we have an adult problem .The young people of NZ are under valued .Just look at the unemployment rate in the 15 to 20 age group .20% I THINK .Then the ones that have jobs are under employed many only having 20 hours a week .In the mean time we are importing more unskilled people into NZ as fast as we can .No one should be considered to be employed if their weekly hours are not 40 per week every week of the year .You can not live on 20 hours at the minimum rate .
Back when I was in that age group we had boy racers and youth crime .Hell we even set up Waikeria as a youth only prison .Would we have needed that place had crime rates been as low as many would have you believe ?Now those young offenders from back then have become the adult prisoners in that same prison ,so we achieved bugger all by locking them up all those years ago
