Minister should fess up on cuts – Labour

Simeon Brown needs to be honest about how much more money he expects Health New Zealand to cut from its budget to get back in the black.

โ€œNational has chosen to underfund our health system and expects Health New Zealand to make even more cuts – but wonโ€™t say how much,โ€ Labour health spokesperson Ayesha Verrall said.

โ€œHealth New Zealand, which runs our hospitals and other healthcare services, was already $1.1 billion in the red. Funds needed to deal with a growing population and inflation are instead servicing the deficit.

โ€œIn todayโ€™s scrutiny week hearing, Simeon Brown pretended that all the new money from this yearโ€™s Budget would go on frontline services, but most of it will be swallowed by Health New Zealandโ€™s $1.1 billion deficit.

โ€œNew Zealanders deserve to know where their money is going. They also deserve timely, quality care both in the community at their local doctorโ€™s office, or in hospital should they need it. Simeon Brown is failing on both points.

โ€œSimeon Brownโ€™s refusal to answer basic questionsโ€”like how much further heโ€™s prepared to slash Health New Zealandโ€™s budget, or which parts of the health system are on the chopping blockโ€”shows a worrying lack of transparency. What is he hiding from New Zealanders?

โ€œNational is making cuts to services New Zealanders rely on and is not even brave enough tell us what they are,โ€ Ayesha Verrall said.

  1. Too many NZers can’t t even get on a waiting list to see a health specialist, get scans, x-rays or do blood tests so they can actually get a diagnosis. This means the numbers on surgical waiting list are not the true number needing specialist treatment cause simeon and his government made too many cuts to the so-called back-office workers.
