MPs urged to ‘lead by example’ and trim superannuation subsidy
The Taxpayers Union says MPs should be “leading by example” and wants politicians’ gold-plated superannuation scheme “trimmed”.
It comes as the government halves its KiwiSaver contribution to New Zealanders, and means tests access to it, saving two and a half billion dollars over four years.
No! No! No!
Firstly Taxpayers’ Union is an Atlas Network adjacent hard right astroturf attack dog doing everything they can to implement DOGE fantasies.
They are like Elon Musk but with less social skills.
Anything they advocate for is corporate interests, not yours!
This move to trim MPs super is their push to gut Super for Gen Xers, Millennials and GenZ!
We want MPs to have generous Super provisions because we don’t want them open to bribes, we don’t want them needing to trade their skills in as consultants, we want them secure so they don’t compromise their values.
We shouldn’t see MPs Super as a perk that needs busting, we should see it as a guard against the type of influence the Taxpayers’ Union peddle.
Whatever the Taxpayers’ Union wants, we should demand the opposite.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

I’m a TPU member. I don’t want to fund Swarbrick, Willlis and Hipkins one cent more than the minimum wage.
Of course you are – you are a cunt
You got it right there daily blog anyarse is a cunt and he sounds like a spoilt little brat
You are why I want to impose both wealth taxes and capital gains tax. Not simply out of spite (although the allure is strong) but in the name of social rather economic justice. Why? Because the is more than enough wealth for everyone to have a comfortable lifestlye AND for the more prudent and TPU type individual to acculumate more than most (that is, become wealthy) – but it doesn’t have to be a sero sum game. The self-centred nature of the more prudent and TPU type individual is akin to the moral development of a child between the ages of around7 and 11, which maybe explains their lack of ability to empathise effectively or de-centre. Sad.
And why do you think I am anti CGT? I am not a trougher boomer.
Wow that’s profound Ennius. You forgot to mention every single one of this coalition that are rorting the system.
“We want MPs to have generous Super provisions because we don’t want them open to bribes, we don’t want them needing to trade their skills in as consultants, we want them secure so they don’t compromise their values.”
Opps, might have missed the mark on that one….
Somewhat, if a once in parliament then that should be a bar to being a lobbyist/consultant for five long years… or ever.
You have spent the last 18 months telling us how corrupt the CoC are and greed is never satisfied so it’s not being paid well that prevents corruption. This could just be a rare example where the TPU comes up with a good idea for the wrong reason. The politicians continually insist that their renumeration is done independently but they established the process and the back scratching explained by Robert McCullough keeps them all paid substantial more than they are worth.
‘I’m a TPU member. I don’t want to fund Swarbrick, Willlis and Hipkins one cent more than the minimum wage.’
‘I want – I don’t want.’ Entitled little bratspeak( bet you got that little Seymour pout as well).
You cannot always get what you want.
I mean, I want all members of the TPU to have psychiatric help but that needs taxpayer funding.
Yawn
“We want MPs to have generous Super provisions because we don’t want them open to bribes, we don’t want them needing to trade their skills in as consultants, we want them secure so they don’t compromise their values”
By definition, you can’t buy integrity. If an MP is willing to take a bribe, or a former MP wants to go back to working in the Beehive as a lobbyist, they will do that regardless of how well off they are financially. Corrupt individuals are always in search of ever greater ill-gotten gains. Conversely, a person of integrity who is utterly destitute will still refuse to engage in corrupt practices.
Yes, the right wing zealots want to make a show of “trimming” parliamentary perks so that they can then overcome one of the moral arguments against looting the pensions of ordinary working people. But the campaign against universal superannuation is already well advanced and will carry on regardless. KiwiSaver, which was intended as the first nail in the coffin of the universal benefit, has support across the colonialist parliament. It will eventually replace the universal benefit, and thus bring an end to the relative equality among the nation’s aged people. Unless we overthrow the colonialist regime before it can get to that point.
Well said, Martin
Just been reading about the Doomsday Book. In 1086 William the Conqueror decided he needed to know who owned what in England, so as to extract a suitable amount of tax.
Who owned the land, how many men lived on that land, how many oxen, houses etc.?
What was discovered was that the land previously owned by 2,000 Saxon overlords in 1066, was now owned by a mere 200 of the Conqueror’s favourites, who had been well rewarded for their services and loyalty.
Also, by asking the same questions 3 times over a period of time, they established that much property had been destroyed by William’s invasion and subsequent theft of land and divvying out.
Does this sound familiar?
We saw this happen with Māori land and the subsequent destruction of the economy and, so far, nearly 2 centuries of generational poverty.
We are about to enter another phase of wholesale asset and land theft by foreigners. The results are bound to be the same again.
A few chosen ones will concentrate all wealth in their own hands while the 90% will get poorer and poorer, maybe for several centuries into the future.
David Seymour is doing exactly what William the Conqueror did, exactly what white settlers demanded 200 years ago here and most people will not profit from any of it because Seymour’s friends and associates will see that they are the ones to profit.
USA is having the same thefts forced on them and too few can see the danger.
Greed is very pervasive and having enough isn’t the goal of many. They aren’t satisfied with ‘enough’. They are so determined to have more than they need or can use, that they will rob future generations to get it. Their own descendants will be amongst those being disadvantaged.
Sorry Martyn, I do not believe MPs can be satisfied by generous bonuses or perks. Whatever we can give them will not be enough when foreigners, bearing bribes to do their bidding, come calling.
I wouldn’t trust the TPU, they have an agenda, but I don’t think people become MPs to be poor.
That’s what greed does to people. They become less human.
