Why the Māori MPs should not be punished today

If you don't want angry hakas in Parliament, don't do things that provoke angry hakas in Parliament then!

The real c word in Parliament is Colonialism!

Hana, Debbie and Ra-wiri were handed an outrageously severe punishment for having the temerity of performing a haka in Parliament.

Now.

Everyone must feel safe and secure in Parliament, no one is disputing that.

But the context here matters eh?

The Political Right brought a deplorable race baiting piece of legislation to the very halls of our Debating Chamber in an outright declaration of war upon the Treaty.

Every Māori in that chamber had an obligation to Haka against this deplorable scumbaggery!

Remember, it only happened because David Seymour played Chris Luxon like a fiddling fiddler on fiddling day!

If you don’t want angry hakas in Parliament, don’t do things that provoke angry hakas in Parliament then!

That Hana, Debbie and Ra-wiri have faced the harshest punishment in NZ Political history for performing resistance to a deeply corrosive and malicious bill is an audacity too far.

Over a Billion people watched the power and majesty of that Haka.

History is watching and it’s a very white settler privilege from the Privileges Committee that history is seeing.

The Government is going to banish indigenous politicians from Parliament while the Budget is debated?

This is what we are seeing unfold in front of our eyes.

  1. Trained Seal Haka at “the rugby” seem fine with many NZers, and when performed for tourists and visiting politicians. Get it right though–there are Haka that are meant to challenge and make a point.

Act and Hobsons Choice white supremacists got their arses handed to them on a plate over the TPB by the biggest mass political movement in years, 300,000 submissions too! and this is a way for some pathetic revenge from right wingers.

The Parliamentary ban for TPM is the colonial Parliament following arcane rules (the rules are not always followed) rather than doing what is right in 2025.

CoC is the most anti Māori Govt. in many decades–even removing Māori words from documents, and Toitū Tiriti must keep on organising till they are defeated.

    • Tim Jago’s mate David Seymour has openly admitted that he’s ordered that most submissions on the TPB and RSB be completely ignored by public servants. Completely disregarding democratic processes is fine if you run a party full of pedophiles, but standing up for the rights of actual human beings is bad if you’re Maori? Curious.

  2. We have gone back to the 1880s .Pure race hate at work here ,Judith should hang her head is shame ,but she is just another in the growing line of hate filled women in the current government .Even Brownlee cant believe the vile hatred here .

  3. Shut up about colonialism, the real word is common. Commonsense. Commonsense which is totally lacking by using a public school type punishment equating to humiliation; however, the humiliation will backfire bigly.
News on international sites now make this storm in a teacup (compared with global domination by a war hungry A.I. system which confuses young children with enemy soldiers ) and the official reaction look like the meanderings of a lonely dreamer from a hundred years ago, wistfully searching for the last remnants of a long lost ‘British empire’. This overreacting ‘punishment’ erases a hundred years plus of some attempt at reconciliation and redress, serving no purpose other than stirring resentment; the hon Gerry Brownlee should have ruled there and then~ No afternoon tea or smokes for the week ~or something like that.
    Thanks for allowing the comment.

  4. Imagine if Luxon or Seymour or Peters disrespected Maori custom on a marae because they believed the tribe in question was behaving in a racist manner. The uproar would be deafening. Guess what we have a colonial past and most of our parliamentary traditions represent this.

The performance of the haka is irrelevant here – what is relevant is that it was against the current rules of the house. If the Maori party honestly wanted to allow performances such as this in the house they could have worked cross party prior to the event, got an understanding and then performed this. They didn’t by choice. This was attention-seeking behavior dressed up as a cultural protest. The punishment – 3 weeks and 1 week suspension – hardly punitive.

The Maori Party need to cut the bullshit, accept the punishment and be smarter next time. Moreover we all know they won’t.

  5. “If you don’t want angry hakas in Parliament, don’t do things that provoke angry hakas in Parliament then!”

So they do a haka at anything they dont like- yeah.. thats not how democracy works.

  6. I’ve heard that the Government is worried it doesn’t have the votes for the Budget so needs to suspend those three Te Pati Maori MPs in order for the Budget to pass.

  7. Until New Zealand changes by Binding Referendum from the Westminster System for our Parliament the Privileges Committee penalties are fair and reasonable.

Forget the Haka – it is the contempt for the system that is reprehensible and which is what has drawn such draconian penalties. Had the 3 members taken the opportunity to present themselves before the Committee when first invited and argue their case a much more lenient decision would have been arrived at.

Because of the approach they took they had to be made examples of.

    • How was that referendum contempt by Key in selling off the power Co’s. What was the example that was made of Key?

  8. Compare the damage done by that haka to the people of NZ, to the damage done to NZders, by this CoC govt. led by bitter and disillusioned MPs.
Winston is a bitter old man who is still chasing his knighthood. He might need it awarded posthumously. Seymour is a bitter, childish man who has a secret agenda which we would be really shocked by, if we knew the whole truth.
Luxon is getting bitter knowing he’s the least popular PM ever and probably the least competent too. He isn’t in control and his only talent appears to be foot in mouth stuff.

I think the haka was in fact, a high point, in the usual stupid, misleading dross that passes for debate in that parliament of ours.

  9. Meh – let TPM & the privileges committee duke it out in a public arena like the 3rd rate comedians they are.

  10. (Bishop acted with professionalism and let parliament do what it is there for to control the fate of the country not amateur dramatics. by a bunch of racist clowns

  11. I’ll be glad to know I cam avoid bothering with Maori protocols and procedures when I challenge the racist academics and governemnt officials who tried to impose a 2-tier education system. The ones who told me I was racist for being born white, that all white European males around the globe have the same rich privileged life and that immigrants will never be accepted as welcome here unless they are from Pacific Island nations.
Again, good to know that the next time I face a stupid challenge and insult to my culture and history like this I can stand up and fight back by shouting down and screaming at the person. As is common where I’m from.

The Treaty Principles Bill was stupid, but so is TPM in grandstanding this whole protest and demanding that whatever they do at any time anywhere is a protected cultural behaviour.

    • “I can stand up and fight back by shouting down and screaming at the person.”

No you can’t. First go away and educate yourself on Māori culture and their haka. Your comment is full of ignorance and colonialism. That makes you a racist.

  12. Reading the comments here I can see that racisim rules NZ still .What a disgusting country NZ is becoming .We are heading in the same direction as the USA and Israel .

  13. It was a powerful haka led by a very very brave woman. I’ll never forget it. I felt so united to all of my land, New Zealand, and all of our people, Kiwis, in those moments. I’ll never forget Hana. I’ll never forget her vulnerability either. Right now and tomorrow she has my strength and my support. Thank you for your staunch gift. I now give you mine as well. Shine xx

    • 100% agree she should be a strong member of any future NZ government .Hana is the new wave of voters coming through who will not tolerate the shit that is happening now .That is the reason the COC are rushing shit racist policy through under urgency ,because they know they will likely be toast in the near future .Talking to senior college kids they are sick and tired of the raceisim and anti environment greed being displayed through out NZ right now .No person is born race hating they are raised that way .
