We know, that's the problem

My personal hell is the thought of being imprisoned for a crime I haven’t committed.

The rage at losing my liberty to a State that has framed me would be incandescent.

Intellectually, philosophically, intrinsically, imprisonment on false charges is the ultimate power of a cruel state.

You can see that burning rage in Stephen Stone who was imprisoned for 25 years by Police manufacturing evidence.

This Government intends to lift the current prison muster by 10 000 with super prisons housing many more prisoners for lesser crimes.

How many innocent people are we placing inside prison now?

Removing a prisoners vote isn’t just illegal and against their intrinsic human rights, it also strangles off the voices of the innocent who have been locked up.

As prisons become more underfunded, corrupt and violent, shouldn’t those held inside be able to vote because the State is ultimately responsible for their well being.

Removing voting rights is culture war red meat to try and woo back reactionary voters National have lost to ACT and NZF.

It’s ugly politics that only delights the Lynch mob.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

  1. When they start making prisoners non-citizens, who is next? Intellectually disabled, debtors, bankrupts, renters, particular races, non-billionaires.
