Liam Dann: What recovery? The gap between the data and how we feel about the economy is growing

THREE KEY FACTS

  • GDP growth and falling interest rates indicate economic improvement but consumer confidence remains low.
  • The Westpac Consumer Confidence Index fell eight points, suggesting recession-like sentiment among consumers.
  • Inflation and job insecurity continue to concern people, affecting spending and potentially slowing recovery.

Capitalism’s greatest cheerleader, Liam Dann, is trying to find the silver linings over at the Herald and believes the .7% GDP uptick is where we need to hang our hopes for the green shoots of growth, but are those green shoots really just desperation, tears and snot?

GDP went up because we earned more from our low dollar and more Tourists visited us than the dire levels Covid had chocked them off to.

So hyper tourism and cheap base primary goods, that’s the hope for NZs future alongside  a privatisation and deregulation programme for their donors interests?

That’s all Liam has to hang his hope on?

Because I’m seeing 400000 beneficiaries, disabled state house tenants, inequality and children in poverty

I’m seeing climate change becoming more of a force that will negatively impact us.

I’m seeing geopolitical turmoil.

I’m seeing no solutions for the poor.

I’m not seeing Liam’s optimism.

We are locked into late Stage Capitalism now, and we only have delusion that somehow things will get better?

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

  1. FGS please give us just one journalist who will say it as it is! We already have the gormless, like Bob the F/wit, who has to comment on every article like it is his whole sad life! Wake up Kiwis, think outside the square and stop believing the “distorted, wishful news” our stunted, controlled media are constantly brainwasing us with. Wake up before it’s too late to save our lovely country and our planet!

  2. “Growth” on a finite burning planet is not an option. The next Gabrielle awaits.

Eco Socialism is where Aotearoa NZ needs to go. Mass solar installs and rain water collection systems, more localised food production and services.

AO/NZ needs to be in survival mode locally, and joining up with BRICS and non aligned internationally.

    • Without a Black Swan event no-one will give up their privilege – we’ll go all Steam Punk and burn all the lignite in Southland before that happens.

    • Keep the state out of it. Politicians have no imagination otherwise they wouldn’t be politicians. We are over-governed and would be better off without them or the state.

Direct Democracy within a participatory culture of libertarian socialism or anarchist communism is the way forward IMO
