The Editor doesn’t moderate this blog, 3 volunteers do, they are very lenient to provide you a free speech space but if it’s just deranged abuse or putting words in bloggers mouths to have a pointless argument, we don’t bother publishing.
All in all, TDB gives punters a very, very, very wide space to comment in but we won’t bother with out right lies or gleeful malice. We leave that to the Herald comment section.
EDITORS NOTE: – By the way, here’s a list of shit that will get your comment dumped. Sexist abuse, homophobic abuse, racist abuse, anti-muslim abuse, transphobic abuse, Chemtrails, 9/11 truthers, Qanon lunacy, climate deniers, anti-fluoride fanatics, anti-vaxxer lunatics, 5G conspiracy theories, the virus is a bioweapon, some weird Blshit about the UN taking over the world and ANYONE that links to fucking infowar.

Between 20 to 30 whales have stranded in Golden Bay, near the top of the South Island.
Project Jonah received reports of a pod of whales coming onshore about 7pm Saturday.
General manager Daren Grover said they would stay with the whales until last light.
Crews were expected to return to the beach just before 6am Sunday.
It is the third stranding in the area in the past two months.

Eight years ago, several U.S. Navy destroyers used sonar in the Bahamas during routine training exercises. Within 36 hours, 17 animals—including 14 beaked whales, one of the world’s deepest-diving whale species—were found on three islands nearby…
…At the time, little was known about any species of beaked whales, elusive mammals named for their beaked skull. But Tyack [of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution] knew it wasn’t the first stranding of its kind. Five similar strandings of beaked whales had coincided with naval exercises near Greece and the Canary Islands…

“We recognize that one of our tools in use for 50 years may have detrimental effects on marine mammals under certain conditions,” said Donald Schregardus, a Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy. “We want to understand these effects better.”…
…“Sonar is the Navy’s eyes beneath the water,” he said. “Enemy submarines used to be easier to detect, as they used to be noisier pieces of equipment. Technology developments have changed them, making them harder to detect with acoustic devices.”
“In many parts of the world, we simply can’t move our ships without first being certain that something isn’t in the water that may harm the U.S. and our Naval forces,” he said. “When you have 5,000 people on an aircraft carrier, you have to be certain the water is clear….
Further – has our fishing around Nelson affected the whales badly?
From historical accounts gathered for Nelson history by The Prow:
the newly reclaimed land around Port Nelson was just the place to site a fish factory. New Zealand Sea Products Export Ltd was formed in 1965 and was poised to revolutionise fishing in Nelson and beyond. The Harbour Board pulled out the stops to get the reclaimed site ready for the building and even agreed to remit part of the lease until the business was established.
Noleen Burton who worked at the factory recalls: “We all stood on the wharf and watched the two big Sea Harvester trawlers, which had originated in Trondheim Norway, arrive at different times ready to begin. After the arrival of the trawlers, the whole operation began to mushroom, with jubilation at the first overseas sales. All factory staff were allocated a free half pound of fish per family member per week. Smoked fish and fishmeal production began also. The future looked rosy.” But the firm went into receivership in October 1968.
One of the trawlers was bought by the government and became the James Cook research vessel; the premises and equipment were sold to a consortium and one of the trawler skippers, Charles Hufflett, became the managing director of a new company, Sealord Products Limited. (Government of our tiny nation withdrawing from its task of managing resources for the people, and ensuring local investment and majority ownership.)…
Nelson is still the biggest seafood port in Australasia, but the growth today is towards aquaculture, particularly in the processing of farmed salmon and mussels.

Note – Callaghan, is that the person who was Science Advisor to one of our ubiquitous PMs?
I think Whales R’Us needs to be our call-sign, as we get along in our environment, meeting difficulties that are not easy to deal with ourselves – and menaced by a callous, predatory mindset that processes mental input though a simple filter ‘Will this be profitable for me and my group of whomever’?
We have had Greenpeace trying to act for the whales, now what influential group will act with helpless, foolish humans, (as to some extent we all are), in focus and use science in a beneficial way, not to rob and destroy, or play with (as with the Greens) but to protect and enable? Octopi are quite clever and dexterous, perhaps we can learn from them! Look, learn and languish!
