Greens accused of spreading ‘misinformation’ over teen’s bootcamp death
The Children’s Minister is accusing the Greens of spreading “misinformation” over the death of a teenager who had been a participant in the Coalition’s boot camp.
But the Green Party is standing by the social media post, shared by Wellington Central MP Tamatha Paul.
On Friday, Paul shared a post on Instagram by state care abuse survivor Tu Chapman that read “Another young life lost to this world. Waking to the news that a rangatahi has died in the newly established boot camps set up by this abusive government.
“I hope this weighs heavily on the minds of the decision makers.”
NO! NO! NO!
The Minister can not be allowed to get away with this misinterpretation of the criticism being thrown at her for the death of a participant in her flawed Military Boot Camp virtue signal!
Put aside the fact Military Boot Camps don’t work.
Put aside the fact this Government just apologised to 250 000 kiwis who were abused by the very same Military Boot Camp mindset.
Put aside the fact the Military Boot Camps are a political tool used to sate the thirst for revenge crime porn click bait generates amongst a frightened electorate.
PUT ALL THAT ASIDE!
The naked truth is that this bout WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN transitioning from anything if we hadn’t forced him onto this boot camp in the first place!
The teenager, who died in a crash in Tirau last week, had transitioned to the community phase of the boot camp programme that is overseen by Oranga Tamariki, after leaving the care of the justice facility in October.
HE WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN IN A CAR ACCIDENT IF HE HADN’T BEEN PLACED ON THIS STUPID COURSE IN THE FIRST PLACE!
Not one is saying the death is intentional – BUT HE WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN IN THE TRANSITION PHASE IF WE HADN’T PUT HIM IN A BLOODY CAMP THAT DOESN’T WORK!
The Government has blood all over its hands, because we forced this kid into a this stupid programme in the first place!
The Government can’t produce draconian social welfare responses used to send virtue signals to their redneck reactionary voter base and then pretend they had nothing to do with a death that occurs during that programme!
He wouldn’t have been travelling if he wasn’t in that bloody programme!
His death is on the Government, regardless of whether or not it was accidental or not!
To then attempt to frame criticism as ‘politicising’ the death when this whole Military Boot Camp is one giant politicising virtue signal is outrageous.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

Tamatha Paul is wrong on this one, and disrespectful to the whanau who lost this boy at such a young age. It would behove her to step back and stop thinking like a 14 year old herself. Nobody knows why the deceased was in that car or what caused the tragic accident, but blaming the camp is simplistic and his death should not be used as an occasion for political opportunism.
The entire boot camp set up is “political opportunism”.
You are dead right but the hatred for this government by some make them lose perspective.
Trevor Tamatha and the Greens hate all Pakeha, not just politicians. Their “ colonialist” rants are another juvenile buck-passing exercise, but any kid who fails to benefit from this program now knows that “ it’s not their fault “ and that government is to blame.
That’s a crying shame when learning self-responsibility is a core part of growing up, and hopefully something acquired in the boot camp experience. Nobody needs Greens giving them license to continue on their criminal path because they’ve allegedly been hard done by. In the middle of this mess is a family who have lost their son forever and should be left in peace.
What a load of horseshit Gentle Annie. Get a grip. That’s like saying the coalition hate anyone who is not loaded.
Trevor Part of the problem here is that Luxon is perceived as a buffoon. That’s all very well at the staff Christmas party, and can provide fun at the post-mortems, but it’s not good enough for a political leader. Add his self- importance and Prince Harry level brain cells, and it’s unsurprising that people faced with day-to-day problems “hate” the government. If he’s the best that the Nats could come up with, they’re stuffed. If they come up with better, we all are.
Trevor your adoration of this coalition has made you lose common sense
You are speaking from experience Trevor.
God damn right Martyn.
Yes obviously a rose by any other name according to Luxon who is supposed to be the PM
The effect of the Boot Camp being the cause of this boy’s untimely death is a nonsensical assertion.
Sickening.
I disagree.
The young man killed in the accident was in the transitional stage of his training under outside supervision as part of Oranga Tamariki. As far as I know:
* he was a victim of the accident – he did not cause it.
* I have not seen anything that suggests he did not have permission to use the vehicle he was driving.
* I have not seen anything that suggests he did not have a Drivers Licence.
In summary it appears he did nothing wrong.
A tragic accident but, overall nothing whatsoever to do with the Rehabilitation Camp or the continuing supervision programme that he was under. In fact as far as I can see he may well have been one of the 70% of the success stories so far from the camp so a shame he lost his life before the full benefits could be seen.
Obviously his parents appreciated the efforts being made to get him back on track as a law abiding citizen because they invited Minister Chhour to attend his Tangi.
He would not have been in the camp if he had had a better upbringing, if he had had more love in his life and less pain a better education ,a better choice of friends a better education ,a better choice of friends.
The camp is the end result of him being failed by government institutions not just this current government but governments over the years as this is a pro lem for more than 1 generation .
Isn’t the camp just the end result of being a crim?
Not really Ennius, I mean have you seen any white shirted, tied, suited males in the boot camps for the appalling rate of fraud that gang does under the guise of business mainly?
Just over 7 to 8 billion of tax fraud in the last year,
oh no they are our friends, our business people.
If only more people would get upset about all that dosh not going into our health and education systems.
Michal- if you steal millions, you don’t go to boot camp.
no you get home detention so you can carry on doing it .
well said Trev nice thinking there .When we fix poverty these problems will go away
Poverty had nothing to do with the Christchurch mosque murders, and again the Greens played a grubby card, with Davidson blaming white “ colonialist” New Zealanders, which was untrue and societally counter-productive.
so whats your answer then ?poverty is the cause of 95% of our social problems you and others of your ilk need to wake up to that fact .
No !!! For once I agree with Trevor.
And this government is perpetuating the issue by spending less on social services and health services that could help these people.
When you have people like Cigareti, No Boats Willis, anti science Collins, Down the Maaris Seymour, what I said last time I was in Government doesn’t count now Peters , don’t build Bishop, Simian I’m right Browne and Luxury softcock Luxon in get ready for more people on the streets and more crime from people who have no options left in their lives.
Maybe TRevor was a tennant in one of Luxons houses he has sold and is now been made redundant and homeless
The boot camp is a fail ,one dead ,one dropped out ,2 absconded and have been arrested for crime over night in hamilton .Where are the other 6 ,that we have invested 500 k each into ?
