MEDIAWATCH: Is Tory Whanau capable of doing an interview that doesn’t end in a train wreck?

Too much Neale Jones, not enough Marx

I want to support Māori Women in leadership.

I do!

I want to support more diversity.

I really do!

But sweet Jesus Tory Whanau makes it hard doesn’t she?

I get that she receives a disgusting amount of racism and misogyny, but her own lacklustre performance and support for right wing economic mythology should not inoculate her from self inflicted incompetence.

How the Christ did she manage to turn her recent ZB Interview into a self centred sob story of how tough she’s doing it on $189k…

‘Feeling the crunch’: Tory Whanau sells car to help pay the bills

– Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau says she’s not spending at the moment because of the cost of living crisis

– She says her mortgage rates have doubled in the past few years and she recently sold her car to help pay the bills

– The mayor recently received a 3.7% pay rise, taking her annual salary to $189,799

– She’s acknowledged things are “really tough” in Wellington at the moment

…how did she mange to turn this into all about her?

The dysfunction of the Wellington Council is already a nationwide embarrassment and joke, whining about how tough things are for you on $189k while your entire city writhes in economic pain is Darleen Tana level tone deaf.

My favourite NZ Twitter commentator Liquid Times nails it once again…

…the aesthetic left Professional Management Class in Wellington are in it for themselves, not the people so it is no surprise they can’t help but articulate their own self needs rather than leadership.

People don’t want to hear how hard it is for Tory with $189k, they want solutions to their economic pain, not a confessional self help therapy session on how tough it is for her!

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

  1. Another incompetent Green. However Wellington deserves its low performing Council. The people knowingly voted in an activist leftist majority whose skill set is not obvious. Hopefully the government does not appoint an observer and Wellington ratepayers reap what they have sown. Outside Wellington, people are enjoying the popcorn.

    • Ennius. Some voted for Tory thinking that she was a goody Green environmentalist, posing in a glam trench coat pin-up style the way the Parliamentary Green girls tend to do, aided and abetted by marshalling out-of-town students who do not pay the rates and like to think they’re saving the planet one drink at a time, and that the young know everything.

When a single woman with no dependants can’t exist on $189,000 it’s time to appoint a Commissioner to clean up Wellington. Some will scream racism, just like they scream anti-Muslim accusations against those uncomfortable about the woke WCC wanting Islam’s call to prayer broadcast daily over Wellington, and I daresay that some will also wail misogyny. As a long suffering rate payer I can live with that.

Tory had her own councillors “ investigated “ for non-existent leaks, which is bloody funny for citizens whose sw drain overflows, and sewage leaks, and suburban geysers, impact horridly upon their lives for weeks at a time and whose unsold cars are likely to be wrecked by potholes, if they can afford the petrol to run them.

  2. In fairness, she gave that answer ‘When pressed by [Newstalk ZB’s Wellington Mornings host Nick] Mills about whether she “actually feels it” – the financial pressure’.

Whanau could have either said she’s not feeling the pressure, or give an insincere sounding answer that she does. Both would provide a desired negative headline for ZB to post.

  3. Some, of whatever political stripe, are just not suited to public office. Examples abound in recent history…“don’t you know who I am!”…Aaron Gilmore Natzo MP. Steal a dead kids ID…Act MP David Garrett.

Before some here get a nose bleed from their high horses, read my link about another Wellington Mayor, ex shoe salesman Mr Blumsky…beaten up except he was not, just pissed.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Blumsky

Tory seems not to have the self discipline or awareness to do very well, and will highly likely be a one termer. But that does not justify the usual suspects on TDB running their misogynist lines.

    • Mark Blumsky hasn’t been mayor for over 20 years, and criticising the mayor poor performance is not misogynistic. Thinking that she needs defending because she is a woman is, however, somewhat patronising.

  4. Re last paragraph. Agree. I regret giving her a ranking last election. She is arrogant and void of any sense of being self aware unfortunatel. A true blue Green.
After the revelation she received that she may be ADHD, suddenly she was the expert – to the extent she wanted to be an ambassador.
All the above however, as you say, no reason for the mysogeny from the tuff blokes and blokesses commenting on this site.

  5. Since James Shaw, the last of the sane Greens, left the Political scene there is not one Green able to conduct a `non Train Wreck’ interview.

Having said that even Shaw was susceptible to clangers in his last couple of years.

It must be catching among Greens because the activists removed from the ACT Meeting in Hastings a couple of weeks ago did the party no favours either..

  6. Yep but she walked into it.As a person who seems to fail upwards she needs to learn how to give political answers to trick questions. She still might end up a good Mayor, I hope so.

  7. She seems to be chaotic, undisciplined and unprepared. And far too trusting of the media to blurt like this. That is bad enough. But at least she’s not actively malevolent like the Nat-ACT boys.
