This whole argument that “we the people didn’t have a say in Lord Cooke’s 1987 ruling” utterly misunderstands the nature of our democracy and is the intellectual equivalent of being a book burner demanding to run the library!
We have a representative democracy, not a participatory democracy.
We elect people and pay them well and resource them with the best advice to make the best decisions, if you don’t like them you kick them out of office once every 3 years.
Demanding a say in issues requiring deep wisdom, experience and technical skill like Constitutional Law and vaccines is like letting children design airplanes FFS!
You are all honestly smarter than Lord fucking Cooke and the vast majority of medical experts promoting the vaccine are you?
The arrogance of so many of you is just jaw dropping in its level of self delusion!
I want a fucking expert making decisions as important as this, not slack jawed yokels who are frightened every time there’s an eclipse that the moon dragon is eating the Sun God!
In fields that demand intelligence, why the Christ would you ask morons for their fucking opinion?
It’s like getting them in to have a say over brain surgery FFS!
Why would you listen to a fucking redneck on advice for brain surgery, or vaccine science, or building a legislative constructional framework that allows indigenous people to access promises made by a Treaty the conquering culture never wants to acknowledge?
This hate of the expert because apparently the experts advice hurts your fucking feelings is woke snowflake trigger level pathetic.
Right wing feelings from the Anitvaxx perma-grievance movement and the anti-Māori settler klan are what is deciding fucking policy here, not expert analysis!
Ill informed, stupid, ignorant, right wing ‘feelings’.
Fuck your feelings.
Let’s be very clear, what the right are arguing for here with this Treaty Principles Referendum Bill is not Democracy, but Majoritarianism.
The benchmark for morality under Majoritarianism is that 51% can vote to kill the other 49%.
Great if you are in the 51%, not so great if you are in the 49%.
A democracy worth its name understands the power structures within society and provides a democracy that actually represents the wider interests of everyone.
What ACT are doing here is stripping away Māori political rights by strangling off any obligation to work with Māori. It makes the Treaty redundant so attempts to pretend this doesn’t impact the Treaty is just a deception.
Majoritarianism is not democracy, it’s authoritarian.
Democracy uses the State to build people up, Majoritarianism demands the State punish those the Majority despise.
We need to fight for our Democracy and not the empty legitimacy of Majoritarianism.
Just because you have the numbers to do it, doesn’t make it right or just or clever or worthy of us.
This is all counter productive culture war revenge fantasies implemented for nothing more than political plunder by shadowy interests influencing an astro-turf debate from the sidelines.
ACT want fat bloke down pub to replace experts because the dumber the debate, the easier the manipulation.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

It appears Seymore has Baldrick and the COC, by the short and curlyies or are they complicit in his motives ???
complicit ,while this smoke screen is going on Luxon is fucking us over and telling more lies .Like yesterdays bullshit press release about crime dropping 20% in downtown Auckland .It may have done so but it took moving 30 extra cops from other places to move the homeless to those other places to make a change .Else where crime for the country as a whole has risen 18% since they came to government .So to make any difference to the whole of NZ we would need 250000 cops if not more .Where I live its open slather as there are only a hand full of cops covering an area bigger than Auckland not a whole bloody army .
People have watched the experts and their track record in transport, crime, health, education, and all the rest of it and drawn their own conclusions
I’m just a fat bloke eating my toast but I do know this, judges do not make the law. Higher up ones can issue an interpretation of the law, or in this case a Treaty, but it is the role of government to make the law. And if the government wants to ask all the fat blokes what they think, then that is part of democracy. It will require a majority of MP’s to initiate a referendum and the PM has promised us this won’t happen.
Put simply it is easier to reinforce majority white prejudice and ignorance than change it.
The right wing always appeals to white prejudice and ignorance to win power.
The 2023 election win was based soley on appealing to white ignorance and prejudice.
The left wing has to win with out appealing to majority white pejudice and ignorance.
A much harder task.
The right is the white rainbow party in power the most.
The left is the multi colored rainbow party in opposition the most.
Its how (white) Kiwis roll
Well if you’re talking about the same ‘experts’ who say it’s ok for men to invade womens spaces or the ‘experts’ who insist that the kung flu never came from a lab then I’ll take the fat blokes down the pub any day of the week.
Relax Hen, it’s not your fault that you were home schooled.
If it was just the fat bloke down the pub they were consulting, then the outcomes of what they do would not be so consistently disastrous for most of us. The fat bloke is going to be right some of the time – if only by chance and with a frequency that depends on the bloke and the pub.
Metaphorically, they are going into high-end restaurants for a nice dinner paid for by sleek and extremely rich ATLAS donors to hear their suggestions and preferences and to feel very ‘comfortable’ (John Key’s favourite word) with taking their ideas on ‘on board’.
i.e. never assume simple stupidity when malevolence explains the phenomenon so much better
AB 100%
