Wounded Palestinian man strapped to front of Israeli army vehicle, used as human shield
“When I saw the occupation soldiers shooting inside the room, I put my head under the blanket and hid,” said Alaa Husseiniyya, 13, who witnessed an Israeli military operation carried out by special forces on Saturday in Jenin. Alaa told Mondoweiss that Israeli soldiers raided the room in which he and his uncles slept and started shooting at them randomly. Alaa recounted that when he lifted the blanket from his head, he saw his uncle, Majd Husseiniyya, wounded and lying on the ground. Beside him was another man, Mujahid Balas, injured in both legs and lying on the floor just outside the room. The Israeli forces seized one of the injured men and strapped him to the front of a military vehicle, driving around while parading him as a human shield before eventually handing him over to Palestinian medical teams, who transported him to a hospital in Jenin. One eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, told Mondoweiss “They appeared to be toying with him for amusement,” the eyewitness said, pointing out that the man was neither wanted nor a resistance fighter, but an unarmed civilian. This was evidenced by the fact that Israeli forces did not arrest him but handed him over to the Palestinian ambulance after he had been left strapped to the front of the vehicle for several minutes in the hot summer sun.
Israel kills dozens of Palestinians in two ‘massacres’ in Gaza
At least 43 people have been killed in two Israeli attacks on Gaza on Saturday. The attacks targeted Shati refugee camp and the Tuffah neighbourhood of Gaza City, the Head of the Government Media Office told Al Jazeera. He said 24 people were killed in seven homes in Shati. Gaza’s civil defence said they had recovered 19 bodies from Tuffah. Gaza’s health ministry said that 101 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 37,551 people killed in the enclave since 7 October. Additionally, 85,911 people have been wounded since the war began. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza caused by Israel’s bombardment and siege is likely to worsen due to scorching heat, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned on Friday. “We’ve seen massive displacement over the last weeks and months, and we know that combination and the heat can cause a rise in diseases,” said Richard Peeperkorn of the WHO. “We have water contamination because of hot water, and we will have much more food spoilage because of the high temperature. We will get insect mosquitoes and flies, dehydration, heat stroke.”
450 Palestinian schoolchildren killed by Israel ahead of high school exams: Education Ministry
Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip and occupied West Bank since Oct. 7 have killed a total of 450 schoolchildren who would have enrolled in high school this year, the Palestinian Education Ministry said on Saturday. Ministry spokesman Sadiq al-Khadour told Anadolu that Palestinian high school exams that began Saturday in the occupied West Bank under challenging circumstances were not being held in the Gaza Strip, Anadolu Agency reports. He highlighted that 450 students “who were preparing to enroll in high school were killed by the Israeli army, including 430 students in the Gaza Strip and 20 in the West Bank.” While 50,000 students in the West Bank took the high school exams, 39,000 in the Gaza Strip were unable to do so due to the ongoing Israeli offensive, said al-Khadour. As of June 17, the Israeli war has resulted in the complete destruction of 110 schools and universities and partial damage to 321 others. According to the government media office in Gaza, the war has also claimed the lives of over 10,000 students.
Ten Holocaust survivors condemn Israel’s Gaza genocide
Holocaust survivors say using the Holocaust to justify genocide in Gaza and repress student protest on college campuses is a complete insult to the Holocaust’s memory. The co-founder of Human Rights Watch, Aryeh Neier, has recently said that Israel is engaged in genocide in Gaza. He’s also said that using accusations of antisemitism to attack Israel’s critics “debases the whole concept of antisemitism.” As Holocaust survivors, we are writing to agree wholeheartedly with Professor Neier — who himself only survived the Holocaust by escaping Nazi Germany as a child in 1939.
At a recent Holocaust memorial, Netanyahu declared: “We’ll defeat our genocidal enemies. Never again is now!” In our opinion, to use the memory of the Holocaust like this to justify either genocide in Gaza or repression on college campuses is a complete insult to the memory of the Holocaust. As Holocaust survivors, we have no special authority on the Middle East but we do know about antisemitism. It’s simply wrong to claim that it’s antisemitic to oppose Israeli genocide. It’s also wrong to claim that calling for equal rights for Jews and Arabs “from the river to the sea” is antisemitic.
Why Israel and Taiwan are forging a closer relationship
In a bid to break out of Israel’s growing international isolation, an Israeli parliamentary delegation visited Taiwan in late April, highlighting the strengthening relationship between the countries.
This trip marked the second such cross-party Israeli delegation within a year. Despite lacking official diplomatic ties, the two sides share similar historical circumstances. Israel was founded in 1948 and Taiwan was founded in 1949. Both serve as sanctuaries for their respective political projects. Taipei donated more than half-a-million dollars to Israel to help soldiers and their families and to fund municipal services. “It was Mao Zedong who said, ‘Israel and Taiwan are bases of operation for imperialism in Asia. They created Israel for the Arabs and Taiwan for us. They both have the same objective’. So almost automatically, if China supports a side, then Taiwan will support the other,” Arnaud Bertrand, an expert on China, told Middle East Eye. Taiwan and Israel have found a common cause. Over the past 50 years of their informal relationship, they have signed dozens of agreements to strengthen bilateral ties. In 2022, Israel’s trade with Taiwan reached more than $2.67bn.
Cuba joins International Court case against Israel over alleged genocide in Gaza
Cuba on Friday decided to join in South Africa’s case against Israel before the International Court of Justice, Anadolu Agency reports. According to Radio Havana Cuba, under its obligations to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Cuba will exercise its right as a third state to present its interpretation of the convention, which it asserts Israel has flagrantly violated in the Gaza Strip. The case seeks to halt the atrocities against the Palestinian people due to the Israel’s disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force in the illegally occupied Gaza territory. Cuba said genocide, apartheid, forced displacement, and collective punishments have no place in today’s world and should not be tolerated by the international community. It called for justice and adherence to the UN Charter and international law. Israel stands accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, whose latest ruling ordered Tel Aviv to immediately halt its operation in Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians had sought refuge from the war before it was invaded in May.
The UK is about to witness what will be a pivotal general election as tensions rage internationally, specifically in light of the continuing war on the besieged and decimated Gaza Strip. The vote of the Arab community could play an important role in major cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester, where there is strong competition between candidates and where every vote is crucial.
Moreover, this round of British elections has taken on a heightened relevance among British Arabs, allowing them to back candidates who have stood firm on the issues they care about, especially those related to the Middle East, and Palestine, as well as other, local concerns like integration, fighting discrimination, education, and social services.
