50% more exploitation + 25% less accountability

Bernard Hickey reports that Luxon wants to expand the (RSE) scheme by 50% despite enormous exploitation of those workers…

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon told reporters after a meeting over the weekend with Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape he wanted to double the size of the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme that imports workers temporarily from Pacific nations to pick fruit, but not immediately.

MBIE conducted a review of the RSE scheme last year that highlighted concerns over migrant abuse and a lack of adequate accommodation. Many workers are housed in temporary structures and dorms for months at a time.

…so that’s 50% more exploitation while Luxon gives us 25% less accountability…

Luxon cuts frequency of post-Cabinet press conference

By skipping most non-sitting weeks, Christopher Luxon could end up holding 25 percent fewer press conferences than his Labour predecessors

…at a time when this Government are abusing power like never before by ramming more policy through under urgency than any Government ever, Luxon is screwing the accountability scrum further by reducing press conferences by 25%!

This as Newshub folds and we have less journalism!

This Government are adopting deeply controversial culture war fantasies as social policy when there is less fourth estate scrutiny!

The National Party of New Zealand – 50% more exploitation with 25% less accountability sounds like something their social media team would actually promote.

  1. Why would he even be entertaining that idea at the same time as deliberately making thousands redundant .Surely those people he has thrown on the scrap heap should be first cab off the rank .
The real reason is that he knows there is no where for these pickers to live and locals will not live ten to a room like the RSE worker are expected to do .

  2. And why would you import RSE workers when thousands are being made unemployed.
Bit like buying another loaf of bread because its on special when one is going stale in the fridge.
I know you right wingers will trot out the old Chestnut of NZERS not wanting to work. How about thinking that NZERS don’t want to be treated like slaves.

  3. As we can see kiwis are not lazy they just keep getting thrown out of jobs every time there is a national government .Hell labour kept everyone employed through a two year pandemic only for these clowns to throw them all on the scrap heap and close down every second business .Note even the reserve bank says its time for people to stop price gouging .The down turn we are having right now is down to companies gouging through the pandemic .Remember the record profits up 60% year on year when Luxon says the country was closed for business .He has done nothing to open up those busineses and in fact has closed more in six months .He leads a delegation of A grade TRADERS but is sadly a D GRADE PM ..

    • What did you expect from the skinhead gang???
      A listers only….not the C lister’s,tag-alongs & bottom feeders!

  4. This Govt is killing our country…

It’s quite rare that I make posts like this without 100% confirmation as it just causes unnecessary anxiety and panic for migrants. However, I’ve just had too many recent discussions with INZ about this and it appears there may be a bit of a perfect storm brewing in the immigration space that could have far reaching consequences for many. It appears there are going to be marked changes to both the Green List as well as visa application fees in the coming weeks.
As part of the National’s campaign in 2023, they were quite vocal about increasing visa application fees to within 90% of what Australia charges. Any of you that have explored the possibility of immigrating to Australia will know their fees are markedly higher than INZ’s fees. After the elections National seemed to go quiet on this, but with all the public sector job cuts and spending cuts in the media, it has once again reared it’s head.
The Minister of Immigration has been clear that INZ has to both cut costs and increase visa fees in an attempt to achieve savings of $120 Million per year. A few of the increases that have been floated are as follows:
    – Student visas will increase from $375 to $660
    – Post study work visas will increase from $700 to $1,856
    – Partner residence visas will increase from $2,750 to $8,500
    – Residence visas will increase from $4,290 to nearly $9,000
Yes, you read those numbers right, in most categories we are talking about more than a 100% increase in fees.
In addition to this, INZ have intimated in recent meetings that there is a big shakeup coming to the Green Lists in the next few weeks. As always, they have been quite cagey about this but have let slip that there will be a number of occupations coming off the list and a good number of the removals will come as quite a shock.
I have always been quite vocal about this, if you are eligible to apply for a visa, regardless of the type, don’t ever delay! I have seen sooooo many people over the years caught out by changes from INZ as they delayed their applications for whatever reason.
Once again, if you are planning or in the process on applying for a visa, including residence or PR, DO NOT DELAY as you could find your pathway gone or be subject to massive fee increases from INZ.
If you need any help to get your applications across the line before the looming changes, please do not hesitate to get in contact with us ASAP.”

Not only is this Govt telling New Zealanders to fuck off to Australia they are telling immigrants.
This Govt are supposedly bringing costs in line with Australia, yet forget they pay half the wages Australia pays.
Then of course it will be user pays by way of tolls on our roads and increased registration costs, public transport costs and rates rises because this Govt is clueless on water infrastructure. Add prescription fees and multiple other user pays and privatisation costs and wallah, your miniscule tax cut has disappeared before you see it plus some. One word for this Govt…CORRUPT!

  5. they’re trying to brainwash us – I see they’re big on the curriculum… again. next it’ll be church err charter schools – insidious nasty moral crusaders

  6. Exploitation maybe depending on your perspective. The lack of accommodation for seasonal workers that turn up for a few weeks or months of picking, is an issue, whether RSE or local. If seasonal work could be organised better, it would be a more attractive option. A study could be done, to find crops that mature at various times, giving more continuity of work. Maybe like “harvest trail” in Aus. A continuity of seasonal work could appeal to people with campervans or vans, such as semi retired or backpackers or workers made redundant during recessions, who could stay where they are working, and amenities of water, electricity, kitchen, toilets, be provided at each worksite. Workers staying in campervans would get around the accommodation issue. Seasonal work organised well, could get more local people interested in doing it. Having to make use of importing RSE workers, is only viable because the workers come from lower wage islands in the pacific, and may be viewed as more compliant workers by employers, who have less knowledge of employment laws and rights and acc etc, and if injured the employer can more easily wash their hands of them. A viable business should not have to rely on importing RSE workers, because RSE workers would not come here, if the wages they could get in the islands was higher. Future historians may view the current practice as exploitation, but then actual slavery was also a societal norm once upon a time. Basically some businesses find it more profitable to use RSE workers, and that’s what the regulators take notice of. The mighty dollar wins again.
