We cannot recall having ever seen a more contemptable piece of journalism than Jack Tameâs 45 minute interview with the Israeli ambassador on this morningâs Q and A.
45 minutes of unchallenged Israeli lies and propaganda was presented to New Zealanders directly from the Israeli Embassy courtesy of TVNZ.
And as is typical with Western media, and Television New Zealand in particular, Palestinians and Palestinian viewpoints were no-where to be seen.
People around the country are rightly outraged.
As a first step we are making a formal complaint to TVNZ and the Broadcasting Standards Authority.

I didn’t hear the interview, but the carefully prepared backdrop to the photo seems intended to indicate that Jack Tame is an official representative of the New Zealand government. I am mystified as to why Israel would want to give this impression, or why Jack Tame would allow it to do so.

The interview made frequent reference to legalities, legal advice, lawyers.

Will Israel foot the bill for Gaza reconstruction, since the ambasador admitted that they will not wipe out Hamas, then turning Gaza into rubble seems ultimately pointless.
NZ has some responsibility by association since many of those in Gaza have been killed by explosives manufactured in the US and UK, which are historically NZ allies, and which NZ is currently discussing Aukus pillar 2 with.
Since the Gaza war broke out, the US has made not a couple of shipments, or even a dozen shipments of weapons to Israel, but have made over 100.
Can Gaza be seeded to Egypt? Can WestBank be seeded to Jordan? Can there be a referendum for this overseen by the UN? All the previous talk of a two state solution, seems to have gotten nowhere.

Why is the Israeli ambassador still in NZ? I would have thought that we could block his food, electricity and water supplies like Israel is doing to Gaza then see how long he lasts. At least we could be non violent to preserve some sense of dignity.

Bias in an ongoing genocide is a serious matter, for which Jack Tame and his team will have to answer.
Grave television news and long ‘discussion’ at breakfast was always an irrational (barmy in plain English) idea and by the sounds of it this interview is proven as unsuitable viewing also bad for digestion, health and safety and mental health to be shown at a time when one is in one’s fumbling efforts to get neurons in order and stalwart and considering if there is to be a hard decision this day to be made that goes against the general consensus which will do you no good for promotion!
A sentence like that is an example of what should never be broadcast at breakfast time, and in the same way, news about a long-running debasement of a once-proud people with principles and imagination, ie either the Jewish or Palestinian people (toss a coin) cannot be properly considered at that time.
I did watch it, initially thinking, here we go, how is this going to unfold. The setting puzzled me a little, with the NZ and Israeli flags in the foreground giving the impression it was all politically sanctioned. I’m sure it was. TV1, national television NZ on Air funding. The script seemed predictable. No doubt the Israeli ambassador was given a prior outline of the questions. Jack Tame, to his credit, took the moral ground. As Tame pointed out the killing of innocent children in conflict is morally indefensible. As is the killing of civilians, although historically this did not prevent the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Others more knowledgeable in global conflicts might point to other situations where the moral and the pragmatic have become blurred.
The Israeli ambassador predictably took the legal ground, and painted Hammas as a terrorist organization with no democratic mandate. Plenty would be taking his side on this one. And in the end the Israeli position seemed to carry the day. The ambassador wouldn’t budge. IMV it was a challenging interview for Tame, not least with the two flags in the foreground but also because in the format presented for the interview he was never really was able to hold the ambassador to account for Israeli actions. But let’s face it, Jack Tame is no Pilliger. Not that he aspires to be.
Both the interviewer and interviewee should be locked in a secure mental facility indefinitely. As part of the Israeli state this guy is guilty of crimes including
Blowing the limbs off children and then starving them to death
Shooting doctors and nurses in the face as they work in their hospital
Murdering civilians indiscriminately without reason including tens of thousands of young, vulnerable and ill
Killing those who had surrendered while waving a white flag (Israelis and Palestinians)
Killing journalists and aid workers like they were hunting animals
Collectively punishing millions of people for the crimes of a few
Starving and depriving people of the essentials for life
Destroying all infrastructure so that resettlement is probably impossible
Forced transfer of people to an area where they are then murdered
Battle testing arms and technology on unarmed innocent civilians
Breaching the Vienna and Geneva conventions
Bombing an embassy
Illegally invading and occupying land
Playing the sounds of babies crying over loudspeakers to draw people out so they can murder them
Posting their crimes on social media for laughs
Sniffing the panties of the people whose homes they ransack and loot
Propagandizing the world, manipulating governments and generally making societies really shit for a lot of people
By giving him a platform TVNZ is guilty of providing cover to these monsters to justify and normalize these atrocities, and is therefore guilty of aiding and abetting these crimes.
Ironically, at our Rally for Palestine in Ĺtautahi Christchurch last week, a speaker from the Palestinian community highlighted ways in which our media is complicit in the ongoing genocide in Palestine. And right on cue, TVNZ delivers a graphic example today. Disgraceful all round.
Why are you outraged. Have you not learnt by now that our media is broken and that their job is to serve an equally broken political system. Why bother appealing to this broken edifice when all they, the media are doing, is doing what they are told to do by our broken/corrupted political system.
Stop bothering to appeal to them – the corrupted – and start fighting the powers behind this corruption through creating awareness among the people to the two major problems (a corrupted media serving a corrupted political system), that we, the people face.
With awareness comes mass, comes mobility, comes the opportunity to pit people power against the power of money, thus the opportunity to break the stranglehold that money holds over politics…remembering of course that awareness will not come from watching/listening to mainstream and state media. Awareness can be created by places like this joint, by independent, typically user-funded media, assuming that these places put the interests of the people ahead of all other interests, of course.
Remember also that a genocide would not happen in a just world. The world is broken, thus we need to work outside of this system in order to fix this system, rather than trying to work with it in a vain hope that it may change. Tokenism is all you will get from this broken system. Meanwhile, if they are allowed to get away with this genocide, then what else, or whom else will be next for this broken system to target.
No. Stop appealing to the broken and start waking up the masses to the state of the real world today. Awareness, being informed, is perhaps the greatest tool we have. Time we used it.
1. Did Hamas start the Gaza War? What about the intensive West Bank ultra-zionist settler violence, harrassment and explusion of Palestinian villagers and communities which escalated in 2023? Provocation, anyone?
2. What about the frankly neofascist coalition members of the current Netanyahu Cabinet like Itamar Ben-Gvir (National Security, Otzma Yehudit) and Bezalel Smotrich (Finance, Religious Zionist)? Or their plans for further illegal settlements? Ben-Gvir is a hardcore Kahanist neofascist (based on the philosophy of the racist and ultra-zionist late Rabbi Meir Kahane)?
3. I agree, Jack Tame was underinformed in this context. Hopefully, we can have an interview with Palestinian solidarity movement leaders for some much needed rebuttal and reframing of this shameless propaganda effort. The Israeli Ambassador should be sent home and perhaps the Israeli Embassy should also be closed.
