Government confirms plans for youth boot camps

The Government is moving ahead with plans to create military style boot camps for “the most persistent young offenders,” Childrens Minister Karen Chhour says.    

The establishment of “Young Offender Military Academies” was part of the coalition Government’s 100-day plan and comes alongside the creation of “a new Young Serious Offender designation” said Chhour.   

“We intend for a pilot for a military-style academy to be operating from the middle of this year. It will have a military-style component as well as a rehabilitative and trauma-informed care approach to help these young people turn their lives around and reduce their risk of reoffending,” she said.

Let’s be 100% clear here.

If you are Right Wing you don’t care Military Boot Camps don’t work, all you care about is that kids you despise get the bash from some brutal Full Metal Jacket level Boot Camp fantasy!

Admit it, you known this doesn’t work, you just want revenge and a sense these kids are frightened and yelled at.

You know it’s all counter productive but this is redneck vengeance being passed as social policy to make right wing voters feel a sense of power in their powerless lives.

There is no science based research that proves these things work and that’s fine by the Right because it’s not about facts, it’s about right wing revenge.

Just admit it.

  3. “A military style rehabilitative trauma informed care???” That’s equally as insane as the wokies claiming that men can give birth. First of all the military isn’t a replacement for fathers it’s where you go to prove that you are tougher than your dad. They’re just taking the good bits out of military training. The discipline. Routine. And public pressure and prestige. NZDF needs soldiers you can’t take precious few soldiers away this will be as equally taxing on them as coronateen. These guys are insane.

  5. Many of these left wing thinkers said cell phone bans in school would not work .Now principals are praising the idea.
    These kids are the way they are due to lack of guidance and control . The big question is can this government do the job properly with adequate funding .It is worth a try if it saves a kid heading done a live of crime.Ignoring them has done nothing to help.

    • I always thought that cell phones should not be allowed in schools, I suspect that cell phone phobia exists across all political views so you are on a dead end with that accusation.

It’s painted as left wing criticism rather than feedback from conservatives who actually have brains, can add, and call a spade a spade

My brother went to one of those governments camps for bad boys and was bum fucked they don’t work he came out worse than when he went in and is still bitter and angry and the Government had to pay out compensation although it wasn’t much. I don’t have much faith in boot camps nor do I have confidence in this governments ability to deliver.

    • Really G-surgeon and you believe them? The cost of touching the boys at the last boot camps would have costs our government millions and millions of dollars.

  11. Too late GS the damage has been done when a young person gets abused, what do you think this does to them. They are fucken angry and don’t have any trust or respect for authorities or the law including our government.

In my youth I was one of those was sentenced to a juvenile detention centre, presided over by a Commander H. who had been superintendent of the Portsmouth Naval Prison, reputedly one of the toughest prisons in Europe. Having failed to “break” me he held me in confinement until the last half hour of my sentence, and was then surprised when, on discharge, I offered to shake his hand. I have nothing personal against Commander H. He was just another British military officer trying and failing to force compliance upon the recalcitrant youth of Aotearoa. He didn’t really understand us, and initially at least underestimated our strength, determination and loyalty to our own people. The adult prison system, which I went on to experience later in life was similarly ineffective. The prison authorities were powerless against those who put their trust in God. And that is the way that it will stay so long as the colonialist regime continues to exists.
