Locals need infrastructure, build it, and then it or its services get sold to bigger guy – locals watch wealthy visitors motor in, while they scull their way home across harbour in coracles. Or motorised jet wooters (water-scooters) with waterproof freight bags to keep their goods dry, and getting fined a week’s pay for not wearing their lifejacket left at home.
I’m prophetic you know. Send money to THIS address…?!?

People travelling between Hamilton and Tauranga may be forced to make an almost 100-kilometre detour after a major road was closed due to a crash.
A collision between two vehicles on State Highway 29 in the Kaimai Ranges has shut down the main connecting road between the two cities.
The road has been closed since midday and the transport agency said it does not know when it will reopen.
The shortest detour is 96km via State Highways 28, 5 and 36.
Travellers posting on social media say traffic has ground to a halt…
Let’s be rational. We don’t care about people and welfare and wellness – only to appear to. We are supposed to care about tourism and keeping the -NZ- show on the road! So open the road quickly – tell the authorities how and what to do – and don’t disrupt everything. Get the ambulances through and out, get the helicopter camera in, do basic measurements and position drawing. Get say three drivers info from each direction, get towies in, vacuum up and load in special non-flammable tank as much fuel as poss to end up in facility, swill the road of blood and fuel, and get the hell out of there. Same on ordinary motorways. We’re not in the 19th century Dr Ropata – slow and out of touch.
Instead turn all our care funding to young parents and working people. Run courtesy campaigns, watching out for each other, bring in some reporting and random prizes for good deeds by drivers and good driving. We need to change as are so screwed at present. Laden with oppressive laws after we were supposed to be getting efficiency and more freedom and opportunities.
Get informed. Everything we need to know now has already been thought and probably published. We Don’t need to start from scratch but we do need to start in the race. Even if we hop on a taxi for part of the way and don’t do all the marathon on our own strength. See each other at various finishing lines along the way, keep in touch. Move. It’s not for everyone but some need to keep committed. Here is a book about moving people set in their ways, faced with a disastrous situation, to a new method. How did it get done?? Read and learn. We may find how to change certain difficulties here.

30 Nov 2023 — A National Evil. Jonah Goodman on the curse of the goitre in Switzerland.
(Cretinism, small stature and deafness were major problems also. Cretinism and goitre were among the great medical mysteries of 19th century Europe. One from many stood out, Heinrich Hunziker a GP aged 34, in 1914 posited that the troubling conditions were not caused by disease, something to be avoided, but by an absence of something, iodine.)

National Evils and Practical Remedies: With a Plan for a Model Town
Front Cover
James Silk Buckingham
Cambridge University Press, 8 Dec 2011 – History – 554 pages
James Silk Buckingham (1786-1855) was a Cornish-born traveller and writer. As a member of Parliament in the 1830s he campaigned for reforms in the army and navy as well as for the temperance movement. He travelled widely to the Middle East, Israel and America, wrote travel books and also founded a number of journals. One of these was The Athenaeum, a weekly London periodical covering a wide range of topics from literature to popular science. In this work, published in 1849, Buckingham names seven evils threatening contemporary society (ranging from ignorance from intemperance to war and competition), proposes a number of economic reforms that primarily target the existing taxation system, and pleads for a new Reform Bill.
Buckingham develops in great detail his vision of a model town and the community inhabiting it, and offers his thoughts on how a such city should be planned.
