Labour MP Helen White’s terse media interview after knife-edge win in Mt Albert
Labour MP Helen White says she “did really, really well” in her knife-edge victory in Mt Albert and the party “punched above [its] weight” despite getting only 106 more votes than her opponent in the traditionally red seat.
Speaking to media today, White said: “I didn’t do badly. I did really, really well.”
She called media questions about her doing badly “ridiculous”. “If you look at the stats, you’ll see that [I did well].”
…Helen White has all the undeserved smug sense of superiority that Tory born to rule prick MPs have, but she’s in the Labour Party!
Her 2020 interview with Finn Hogan helped set the scene for what a self important prat she was and just as Auckland shows how much it HATES Labour, her whole, ‘don’t shit on my great win’ mentality highlights everything that Auckland now hates about Labour.
While Jacinda sacrificed Auckland for the well being of the country, Aucklanders saw none of the rebuild and took all the sacrifice and they now HATE Labour.
I mean fucking HATE Labour.
How much?
Look at how Labour were utterly repulsed by the Auckland electorate…
The loss of the centre throughout Auckland is evident in the fall in Labour’s share of the party vote in seats that traditionally lean left: Mt Albert, New Lynn, Te Atatū, Kelston, Mt Roskill, and Maungakiekie.
What’s even more indicative, however, is the collapse in support in traditionally right-leaning seats, suggesting heavier losses among blue-centre voters who tried Labour and then abandoned it.
In electorates including Epsom, Tamaki, Pakuranga, North Shore, Upper Harbour, Kaipara ki Mahurangi, Whangaparāoa, East Coast Bays, Botany and Northcote, Labour’s share of the party vote more than halved between 2020 and 2023.
All of these seats returned a Labour Party vote below 2017 levels.
And even in Labour strongholds, voters stayed home this election: 13,000 fewer people voted Labour in Māngere in 2023 than in 2020. In Manurewa, it was 11,000 fewer.

….I’m going to do an autopsy on why Labour lost and what the Left have to do now in the weekend, but suffice to say here, whoever the next Labour leader will be after Chippy gets dumped for his fucking up the election, they HAVE to be an Aucklander.
Helen White’s demands to be appreciated for hanging onto her seat by the barest of margins sums up the smug arrogance Auckland just punished Labour for.
You fuck Auckland and you fuck your chances of ever winning again.

Melissa Lee didn’t win. That’s worth celebrating
The Mt. Albert, Mt. Roskill, West Auckland area has been swamped by immigrants who have no idea about National’s poor track record of squeezing public services and undermining everyone.
What they find here is so much better than where they’ve come from, that when they hear lies about how much better again it will be under National, they believe them.
They haven’t a clue what NZ is really all about hence the willingness to go along with Seymour’s silly ideas. He would take us back 50 years to where Australia still is, on race-relations, but they don’t understand that.
They just want to get ahead on a personal level, and if that means walking over the rights of people already here who have done the hard work and paid for everything they now enjoy, so be it.
This time next year when crime hasn’t stopped and dairies are still being ram-raided, houses are more expensive, food and fuel prices still high, social division as bad as ever, public services feeling the pinch, the list goes on, they might suddenly suffer a bit of buyer-remorse.
I hope so, because their voting has just made things a great deal harder for 90% of NZ’ers including themselves.
Joy, Inclined to agree with some of this. Locally, immigrants from one large continent are better off than they were in their country of origin, and they can become a bit arrogant if it goes to their heads. Some have the comfort of the relatives who they bring with them; it’s complicated.
Totally wrong. What you are seeing is migrant communities who look at the excesses of the NZ welfare state while there are jobs galore but NZ’ers who can’t be arsed working and then see their own folk ram raided, bludgeoned and murdered whilst trying to claw out an existence in their family business; the perpetrators of which are let off scot free or with barely any punishment. THAT is what those figures point to.

Oh dear. Grace and humility become pollies better than Markling the media does. This abrasive disconnect with reality has been the modus operandi of too many of them for far too long and is another reason why the left lost.
If we could get the demographic breakdown of the vote I believe you will find outside of Pacifica and Maori Labour would be sub 20% in Auckland. Clearly they have lost the Indian vote that was a cornerstone of Auckland Labour.

Maungakiekie is not a traditional Labour seat. We have proven to follow the country swinging with whichever party is most popular – but probably have more of a blue bend.

Yes, I saw all the Indians with Luxon many are all about climbing the ladder many don’t care about the indigenous peoples here or NZ culture. And they bring their elderly parents who scab of our health system and claim pensions it’s not fair nor is it right. I have seen these people at our hospitals getting clinicals treatments when many of us don’t even make the lists this needs to be stopped. And we need to make sure those dumb NZers that voted for National open their fucken eyes and ears.
Does Auckland hate their mayor too who didn’t give a shit about them when they were flooded? And I wonder if they hated the money Labour gave from our taxes to pay for their flooded houses.
I know Helen White a bit: she’s always very upbeat, so although her comment wasn’t very smart, it wasn’t really arrogant. I think Mt Albert would benefit from a hands-on MP of any stripe, and Helen would be good in that role being social and caring. The electorate couldn’t have had a lot of attention from previous incumbents, with them both being PMs.
You can’t blame new immigrants to the country voting against being made second class citizens. That’s why they left their old countries!
