Green Party Launches Rental WOF Bill

The Green Party has today placed a Rental Warrant of Fitness Bill in the Member’s Ballot.

“1.4 million renters in Aotearoa spend more of their income on older, colder and mouldier housing than those who own. That is a political choice. The Greens choose to prioritise and guarantee warm, dry homes for all and today we’re putting our solution in the ballot,” said Green Party renters’ rights spokesperson Chlöe Swarbrick.

“The Government currently has no real world data on how many private rental properties are Healthy Homes Standard compliant. They have no idea how many landlords have self-verified exclusions to those standards. They have no idea whether the companies holding themselves out as verifying these standards are doing rigorous checks. These systemic failures are precisely how renters fall through the cracks and end up in our hospitals with preventable illnesses from cold, damp homes.

“Our WOF Bill fixes these issues once and for all, by ensuring homes are certified warm and dry instead of continuing to place the burden on tenants to fight for basic human rights through the Tenancy Tribunal.

“We don’t need to rely on the lottery of the ballot to make this law. The Government can and should adopt this obvious, evidence based solution and I’m calling on Labour to do exactly that.

“Any political party that stops short of ensuring everyone’s home is healthy and affordable is actively choosing to make life harder for 1.4 million renting New Zealanders. Those politicians are choosing to prioritise profit over people.

“Renters deserve better. We know how to make homes safe, healthy, affordable, and warm. What’s so far been missing is the mainstream political willpower to get it done. Renters have waited long enough. The time is now,” says Chlöe Swarbrick.

  1. What a pathetic joke the Green Party has become. Government is NZ’s largest landlord and in spite of the Greens being in power they FAIL to even do the basics on healthy homes in Kainga ora houses.

NZ didn’t use to have fires in boarding houses killing multiple people – but under the Green grifters, Grenfell is coming to NZ with their pathetic ideas of housing that are out of touch with the reality of what many renters in NZ are capable of, including one being arrested for arson after the boarding house deaths at Loafers Lodge.

If you want to be a battery hen renter, that may have an antisocial neighbour close by, then VOTE GREENS. The anti social will never be evicted and judging by the guy that just shot two of his colleagues at the construction site in Auckland, even the paroles are out on the streets, don’t worry about community safety, it’s all criminal rights in NZ these days. The police are too busy to bother about simple theft these days, and normally it’s your neighbours but could be an organised gang which is expanding twice as fast as police officers.

Don’t forget there will soon be very few private rentals left the way the Greens and Labour are going, so emergency housing, community housing and Kainga ora that still can’t get healthy homes and a homeless budget of 60 million unspent while they organise their strategy, aka no back up, so your on the streets.

In spite of the Labeen train wreck on housing and lack of action on healthy homes for government housing, they are now going for a WOF that will take out the 90% of housing that they have got left.

They are literally worse than a waste of space. Keep voting for them if you like their performance so far and your rental life is easier than it was 6 years ago, before they got in power!

Another 3 years then they can go for 40% of NZ being homeless as one of their outcomes the way they are going!

Remember to ask where the 1 – 2 billion spent on mental health went. They don’t seem to know. And don’t care.
