Does this call for trees on hillsides now? To tie the ground together and deflect the continual force of the rain, the trees would have to be evergreen ones. No doubt Federated Farmers is giving a lead on this, and has workshops on it to encourage farmers in practices and science that will help them, their bottom dollar and their land and produce! I notice that the land in the images has few trees.

Coffee plants evolved in the understory of Ethiopia’s highland forests; they are well-suited to shade, says Eduardo Somarriba, an agroecologist at the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center in Cartago, Costa Rica.

A diverse canopy of native trees can help coffee plants thrive. Certain trees pump nitrogen into the soil, removing the need for intensive fertilizer application, Somarriba says. Native vegetation suppresses weed growth, stabilizes soil and temperature, improves water retention and supports pollinating animals.
Our love affair with radiata pine has been too intense and we have missedut on partnering up with other useful trees that would be have better ‘natures’.
Agroforestry
Agroforestry became popular in the 1970s. In theory, growing a tree crop on land that is also grazed by stock seems to be an efficient way to use land. In practice, agroforestry with radiata pine proved uneconomic. To make sure there is enough good-quality pasture for stock, agroforestry sites need to be moderately fertile and trees need to be widely spaced. Under these conditions radiata pine grows fast, but not tall. Its timber is of a lower density than plantation-grown radiata, and therefore is worth less.

Kevin Kelly, now 71, is “senior maverick” at the award-winning tech magazine WIRED, which he co-founded in 1993.
His new book Excellent Advice for Living: Wisdom I Wish I’d Known Earlier features 450 proverbs he’s gathered from a wide range of sources.Paying attention to advice can help us live better lives, Kelly says.
“The whole point of advice is that you can gain things without having to make all the mistakes yourself. You don’t have to make all the mistakes. It’s inevitable that you’re going to make mistakes. And making mistakes is a great way to learn.”
The wisest people he’s encountered borrow advice from previous generations, and over the years he’s used advice to help move towards his own dreams.
Let’s have a go trying out some relatively small and not costly things and find out whether it’s a mistake or not, not just flaccidly demur from even giving it a go. Go boldly at it, ‘We haven’t much money so we’ll have to think.’
