ACT’s David Seymour blames spike in supermarket crime on Government’s plan to reduce prison population

The ACT Party is blaming a spike in crime at supermarkets on the Government’s plan to reduce the prison population.

This is grade a bullshit being spun by David here and shows how easy it is to manipulate broadcasters who don’t do their own research!

ACT are manipulating the Prison and Crime narrative.

They say the soft-on-crime-cuddle-a-crim Labour Party are fecklessly letting out 4000 prisoners while the crime rate soars.

They are not only confusing correlation as cause, they are ignoring how and why Labour gained those numbers in the first place.

When the National Party tightened Prison policy they allowed for non violent offenders to apply for home detention while in prison. All Labour did was provide assistance to the Prisoners eligible for that process to fill in the forms, because most of the prisoners are illiterate.

They aren’t skipping out the front gate and ram raiding Michael Hill Jewellers, they are on home detention and we put them on home detention because we know being inside prison is the best indication you are going to go back to prison!

70% reoffend after being released for two years!

They do that because Prison is a brutal, violent, corrupt, understaffed nightmare that is deeply traumatising and damaging for those who don’t pose a violent threat.

Only the worst are being kept in there, people whose actions are deeply damaging and all we are gaining is time inside where they can’t hurt the general public.

Our prison system is damaging, it takes angry hurt men and turns them into angrier monsters.

That’s why you want them out of prison!

So why is our crime rate soaring?

Let’s be honest, some certainly are sawing off their ankle bracelet and joining the Frey, but that is a single digit minority, not anywhere near what is generating the current crime wave.

What is generating the current crime wave is the same thing that is generating crime waves throughout the post-covid Western World.

The same is happening in Australia,  UK, Canada and America.

Post covid societal and economic stresses causing crime waves at the same time there is 12.5% food inflation and a cost of living crisis while surviving the ongoing economic, cultural and social impacts of climate crisis storms and geopolitical shockwaves is as predictable as National having to walk something back 24 hours after Luxon says it!

Of course crime is exploding everywhere because the covid sacrifice was felt unevenly across our unequal society, pretending building more fucking prisons is a solution to all of that is sophistry at its most intellectually bankrupt.

  1. Agree in what you say in regards to prisons in that it only makes criminals more hardened. However in regards to the people who blatantly steal from supermarkets and commit ram raids on the cost of living (cost of production) crisis is purely fanciful and naive as most of the hood rats that commit these crimes are doing it for Shits and giggles as they know that nothing will happen to them legally.

For those that think this is poverty, apparently items like nappies and milk are not targeted – it is higher priced items like meat, chocolates and Panadol.

I think the average Joe is caught between the supermarkets ripping consumers off and the shoplifters ripping the supermarkets off. No doubt the supermarkets make their suppliers pay for stolen goods which is why they don’t bother to try and stop the shoplifters, they have a near monopoly after all.

  3. The prisoner s don’t know how lucky they are in NZ. Iike a holiday resort here compared to overseas prisons.

  4. Thats if they abided by their home detention but home detention breaches are way up. And little is done about it.

And part and parcel of the jail emptying law and order policy is the judiciary ensuring those exiting are not replaced. And its at that point our criminal’s say, quite rightly, there is no consequences, let’s go crazy

    Seymour is correct!

  5. Prison population has dropped by over 20% yet crime has increased – I’m no statistician but something doesn’t add up.

    • Right so is that why crime numbers are up in a number of countries? NZs reduced prison population? That was easy

      • No idea about other countries.

Personally – reduced sentences, no sentences is playing a role in repeat offending.

Less time in remand is less rehabilitation – although cooped up with other criminals is a debate about getting rehabilitation in prison.

I think housing and education are the biggest issues that contribute right from the start to be fair followed by parenting.
But parenting would be easier with housing and education.

  6. The Banks and the Supermarkets are driving inflation not wage increases what a lot of Bullshit.

  7. The catch and release crims need to be kept off the streets
If you can seal off Wellington for them that’s great. Otherwise prison
