National proposes reinstating no-cause rental terminations

The National Party would bring back no-cause rental terminations and scrap rules which allow fixed-term tenancies to roll onto periodic tenancies, should it be elected to government at the election.

Let me get this straight, we can’t fucking tax the greedy landlords whose interests have ruled NZ Politics AND National want to give them the legal right to be arsenal,es again.

What a pack of spiteful pricks National are!

This sort of needles abuse of tenants is what led to the homelessness crises under National last time. They give their landlord mates all these needless extra powers to attack tenants with and then leave it to a free market fed by desperation that National Party policy generates.

It shows you how desperate National are and it is a clarion call to ever renter to vote against National in every single way possible.

Mark my words, if National get in, rents go up and landlords legally get to be arseholes again.

So we can’t tax Landlord capital gains AND National will empower them to throw renters onto the street just to push up rentals?!?

There is a class war happening in this country and because we are so intellectually weakened by identity politics, no one has the class vocabulary to actually call it for what it is!

Watching the remarkable push back from the lobbyists the rich have put out to talk down any tax justice against them while giving Landlords more power has reminded us class is the fundamental fault line in NZ and identity politics are simply a distraction.

  1. Leeches are segmented parasitic or predatory worms that comprise the subclass Hirudinea within the phylum Annelida.

  2. I’m pretty sure that rents experienced their biggest increase under the exceptional leadership of Jacinda and Grant and the implementation of their deeply considered and well thought out policies…

  3. Good news (sarcasm) Landlords are leaving in droves and thus the tenants are at the kind mercy of the state and social housing, housing them in flood plains and hotels at quadruple the cost to the other taxpayers. No money to pay for nurses then, all going on social and state housing rents.

Next news, is that the woke are so enabled the high needs that they feel compelled to destroy housing if they don’t get to live in it rent free and deprive any new tenants of a liveable house. In spite of multiple attacks on the house, police are missing in action. (Not the same for ram raids or bank raids – corporate property is a different story).

“A landlord has been left devastated after a group of more than 22 people completely destroyed his rental property, kicking in walls, smashing windows, ripping out cabinets, and leaving taps to run.

The group allegedly went to the Papakura house a week ago and ripped out fittings, kicked holes in every wall, smashed all of the windows, kicked in the exterior cladding, pulled out insulation and left rotting fish at the home.

Taps were also turned on to flood the three-bedroom home.”

Or the poser influencers renting houses where no house is good enough for them, with free rent, constant professional cleaning, swimming pool is not good enough, mysterious bugs that pest control can’t find etc

“I will be sharing to my 60k followers, majority of whom are form [sic] New Zealand, and I will be discussing how we are being exploited by our landlords via our social media platform, naming [the property management company/s], and will further contact the media to cover this story once we go to the tribunal,” the document noted the tenants wrote in an email.”

Note millennial tenants are so enabled that they are even destroying Air B&B hosts overseas who are giving up trying to satisfy people who seem to have difficulty being satisfied, complain about things that nobody else can detect and get rewarded with free accomodation.

Entitled millennials have ruined Airbnb for everyone
    https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/entitled-millennials-have-ruined-airbnb-for-everyone-l2fqdmb77

“As a Superhost I (naively) expected Airbnb to be helpful, but even a phantom smell that my cleaners couldn’t detect became a “health and safety issue” — so guests got a full refund. Having barely broken even, by summer’s end I was so exhausted I “snoozed” the Cornish listing. It has remained locked up, literally and metaphorically, ever since.”

The problem is, when the private sector won’t take them, then the state will have to look after them and they will be suing to the cows come home about how everything is not good enough and making the other tax payers pay them compensation!

  4. Even Prince Harry has become so insufferable that he has been evicted from Frogmore cottage.

It’s so hard being millennial woke, with the world’s problems on your privileged shoulders, your expectations that everyone else has to change to match your expectations, is so hard a cross to bare, that you may need to go to your 5th? 5th? therapist for help on your mental health, which is obviously someone else’s fault.

  5. During the previous National government rents were lower, there was more rental choice and fewer homeless.
    Just saying…

    • But under National inequalities went up as did immigration, fewer homeless bullshit Andrew many couldn’t get on the state housing list cause they made it harder to be eligible as they did with legal aide. And did they measure homelessness they said for 9 long years there is no housing crisis, they cut health and education budgets and decimated many social services but hey they gave the rich a tax cut = doing more with less.

      • Nevertheless, what I said remains true.
Labour have made several moves against landlords, only to find that many landlords have sold up and put their money elsewhere. Resulting in diminished supply and higher rents.

    • And there was no housing crisis ..fewer homeless because they were living in cars and under bridges..just saying

    • Andy cap. National raised the population by 1 million in 9 years and you say there was more rental choice. You are a thick fuck.

  6. This is a dumb idea by National who are trying hard to claw back their voters Act have grabbed. Landlords have made record profits, and some sold and made huge capital gains, and would the rental price go down if this happens somehow, I doubt it. Just more greed and to add to rental woes our stupid government have opened the flood gates on immigration putting further strains on rental properties and availability of jobs for NZers. At a time when we have layoffs why bring too many into our country this is just adding fuel to the fire. Emphasis should be on upskilling, retraining and paying good wages to NZers. We already have too many immigrants sucking up our health dollars I have seen it firsthand when I went to see a hospital specialist.

  7. The ability to evict under such a policy would only apply once a tenancies’ fixed term has ended.

Saying that, National are hams for putting this into the public arena.

  8. Of course National are out of touch, the question is do they enjoy hurting people while they are ripping them off? We need to know this to determine whether to place them in a prison or a secure mental facility.

    • No need for a mental facility or prison just in the backbenches for another 3 years will do Ethan and that will give them another 3 years to find a decent leader.

  9. Ah, having the ability to evict dodgy tenants BEFORE they trash your property or BEFORE they rack up thousands in unpaid rent is not being an arsehole.

    • Nostradamus Landlords, well thats new!

Now we just need to flip that and allow tenants the same scope.

  10. Just heard National want to remove Periodic Tenancies. I rent here in Christchurch and I’ve been in the same rental for years.. as such I’m on a “Periodic Tenancy” as my 1 year fixed-term has long since expired,

If I decided to move, I only need give my landlords 21 days notice. If my landlords decided to ‘sell up’, they only need give me 90 days notice.

National want to bring back “No Cause Evictions”, so why do they need to remove the automatic rollover of a fixed-term tenancy to a periodic? This will inconvenience many tenants!

Under National’s proposed 90 day “No Cause Evictions”, landlords would still be able to give ’90 days notice’ – after a renter’s fixed-term expires. It’s a little on-the-nose to give landlords the ability to strong-arm tenants into signing up for another year.

Tenants many only want an extra few months or the ability to move cities/countries at the drop of a hat [21 days notice]. Also due to NZ’s poor quality rental stock, such a policy may see Kiwis forced to service rental agreements for unhealthy homes, rather than simply upping sticks and moving elsewhere.

  11. Housing minister media appearance! (Note the house flooded under the floor not in the house) but the landlord does get the woke tick for diversity.

2023 – Auckland flooding: Several Kāinga Ora houses lifted off their foundations
    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2023/01/auckland-flooding-several-k-inga-ora-houses-lifted-off-their-foundations.html

More than 10,000 properties owned by the Government’s state housing agency are on flood-prone land and it has plans to build more.
    https://www.1news.co.nz/2023/04/27/concerns-many-kainga-ora-homes-are-built-on-flood-prone-land/

Ok it seems a long way, from Labour and Greens 100,000 new state housing houses promised. They are removing state houses and buying extremely expensive houses to replace them, cutting out the first home buyers and causing a massive debt problem for Kainga ora that used to return dividends not be a liability!!!

Let’s face it, if woke can’t build a bridge after spending tens of millions and years on consultants https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/438907/skypath-project-likely-cancelled-over-technical-problems, woke can’t build a cycle lane https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/01/wellington-city-council-unsure-how-cycle-lane-just-inches-wide-happened.html and woke can’t stop lamps falling down in Wellington https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/apr/12/every-street-lamp-in-wellington-at-risk-of-falling-down-residents-warned then you probably should not be in charge of house building – which coincidentally has also started falling down in extreme weather that they are not going to plan for.

  12. No need for a mental facility or prison just in the backbenches for another 3 years will do Ethan and that will give them another 3 years to find a decent leader.

  13. ‘Ghost Houses’ are the biggest issue in housing market. They are Ghosts because good tenant s are impossible to find

  14. So these unemployed NZ workers are not putting up their hand to work on the buses ,the railway. as truck drivers ,on fishing boats , picking fruit and veg , training as nurses and doctors and mental health workers ,teachers, hospitality workers the list goes on .The economy is static due to lack of staff that is why immegrants are needed because those not working now do not want to work.
