Climate Change Commission urges new targets without forestry in new report

The government’s plans to cut emissions will not be enough to meet its own targets, the Climate Change Commission says, once again warning we can’t plant our way to success.

In a major change, it has for the first time called for additional, concrete targets for emissions reductions that exclude the benefits provided by planting trees.

This could mean more emphasis on reduction efforts, rather than forestry investment alone.

Commission chair Rod Carr warned changes would be needed to get back on track to the government’s goals.

“Our current pathway of policies will not get us there,” he said.

It’s part of draft advice released by the Commission in a nearly 200-page report on how to slash enough emissions in the 2026-2030 period to be on track to be carbon neutral by 2050.

This mild and tepid nothing is the barest recognition of the crisis that is now upon us…

It called for quicker action on new renewable energy generation and electric vehicle charging infrastructure; more investment in public transport; direct funding for Māori to support emissions reduction; more support for farmers to transition, and a faster transition away from burning coal for heating in factories, schools and hospitals.

…yawn.

45% of our rivers are poisoned and we are seeing the catastrophic weather we thought would occur at the end of the century!

Farmers are 1.16% of the population, represent 5.5% of GDP, make 48% of greenhouse gas emissions and create 70% of NZ’s contribution to global warming yet they are able to run roughshod over any legislative reigning in because the have such enormous political and economic power!

While Greens wage war against white cis males, the NZ environment melts down…

New Zealand native animals are heading towards extinction with advocates begging for help

New Zealand is known for its bird life, plants and reptiles but while these species are often recognised for their beauty, the outlook for their future survival is far from pretty.

Stats New Zealand has found that a high proportion of New Zealand’s indigenous species are under threat of extinction.

It found 75 percent of reptiles, birds, bats and freshwater fish species are in that category.

…shouldn’t the Green Party like, you know, be on top of that seeing as it is environmental or is the focus on eliminating 100% white cis males first and then working on environment?

…great, good to know thanks Marama.

So we have a farming industry with enormous political power and an environmental party too involved in identity politics to achieve any climate change action and a Climate Commission who seem to think being carbon neutral by 2050 is the mark of success.

We are going to fucking burn on this planet.

  1. You are right about the burning bit although probably not in the way you intended
12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

  2. Farmers also provide food, so maybe before the woke cancel them, think how high is that cabbage and cheese block going to go, without them?

NZ likes to appoint professional managers who write reports each year, but actually fail to do anything. Reports are the only thing NZ professional managerial class know about and they still can’t work out why in spite of all the reports and committees effectively stopping change by concentrating on reporting not action, NZ is getting worse and worse and completely unprepared aka floods and cyclones.

    • “Farmers also provide food, so maybe before the woke cancel them”

There’s a whole fake food, GMO industry waiting in the wings with serious billion dollar backers and big farming industry insiders also. Farming is going the way of the dodo, the captains of capitalism see a far more efficient way of making money from ‘food’.

Ain’t what I want, but this is just one of the many “build, back, better” changes coming our way in the not to distant future.

    • Not the first disaster by a user -pays ideology that has failed to deliver both academic excellence and workers who are capable of working in NZ for a safer and brighter future.

As well as houses, NZ seems short of managers who are practical enough to do something and resist the failed rogernomics that isn’t working out that well for NZ. The same faces, different portfolios – same ignoring of the truth, as 30 years ago.

  3. Our environmental party like every other environmental party is not running/in control of the climate change agenda. The agenda is being run by the billionaire class, led by their NGO, the IPCC, for the ultimate purpose of the financialization of nature.

As such, the only burning that will happen on our planet is in our pockets!

  4. Year after year you and the climate commission go on about “what needs to be done” etc etc.

Yet year after year nothing does change and all because there is not the political or societal will necessary to make the changes needed.

One day I hope you realize that, people generally don’t care about any of this.

  5. It’s been many years since anyone in the Green Party was competent to talk on environmental issues.
They’re now just a bunch of narcissistic sociopaths
