One year ago this week, Putin embarked upon his invasion of the Ukraine.
His campaign to counter perceived Western influence in Russia’s backyard was a complex mix of his own Christian faith, his sense of history amongst Russia’s pantheon of great leaders, his use of the Orthodox Church and his manipulation of a poorly informed Army have all combined to create the largest land war since World War 2.
The geopolitical impact of two base ingredient countries at war has inflated prices for metals, minerals, grains and oil that is fuelling global inflation.
Despite 200,000 casualties, Russia shows no sign of stopping and Putin’s only regret is he didn’t invade earlier.
He wasn’t tricked or deceived, Putin chose this war.
Sure there were issues of American interference in the Ukrainian revolution and the French and Germans admitted the Minsk Accord was a delaying tactic and many thousands of Russian speaking Ukranians were harmed and killed, but that’s still no excuse to launch an ill conceived vanity project war because you want t shine next to Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and Vlad the Impaler.
The possibility of miscalculation leading to a mass destruction weapon event between the West and Russia is as serious now as it has ever been.
This war is far from over and the fuse of internal civil unrest has been lit in a dozen proxy fronts from the middle East, through to the pacific, through to Africa.
The only winner here is the American Military Industrial Complex who have made billions in sales and who will fight Russia to the last Ukrainian to keep profits high during economic hardship.
There is no military solution to this obscene wound and it will continue to impact geopolitics all year.

Correct Martyn.
It’s what happens when a nuclear power is run by one man without checks or balances. One 70-year-old man with a background in state sponsored thuggery in the KGB.
OPPS – for a minute there Andrew I thought you were referring to Biden – sorry. But as opposing narratives compete to “out-fact” each other it’s a common mistake these days. Also, as attempts are made to woo supporters of US imperialism over to the other side, phrases like; “Putin’s a prick but…..” are increasingly common . And with words like; “perceived Western influence in Russia’s backyard”, to explain Putin’s motives, even old Bomber is getting in on the act. And now, to counter the claims that Ukraine is multi gold medalist in the Corruption Olympics, apologists for US foreign policy say that’s only because Russia wasn’t allowed to compete. Suffice it to say, if history teaches us anything, it’s that, when push comes to shove, people, (even seasoned media hacks) are putty in the hands of the propagandists. Call me simple but I just believe there’d be no war in Ukraine if the US hadn’t engineered it.
Thanks Malcolm, it’s amazing how deeply Cold War propaganda conditioned most Westerners thinking. In NZ the anti Russian conditioning goes back further to British imperial settlement, we spent a heap on building forts due to the non existent “Russian threat” in the late 1800s.
So now the Soviet has broken up we neatly have had our minds conditioned to accept Soviet and Russia as synonymous, FSB with KGB, Putin with Stalin. That is the power of concentration of media ownership aligned with propaganda. It relieves us of the need to think, to research the truth. It gives credit to laziness.
Simple
Very well said Malcolm
It’s quite easy to see why Putin didn’t invade in 2014 to protect Russian speakers from genocidal psychopaths like Kolomoyskyi and his Azov puppets, the need to fortify the Russian economy against illegal unilateral sanctions from the Americans and their dogs, but really, not excusable that it took this long. The likes of Kolomoyskyi and Zelensky were never honest, they were always genocidal, they always had to be stopped.
So faced with Putin and Zelensky you have determined that Zelensky is the genocidal one eh Mohammed . . ties in with with your cliche Muslim-fuelled rabid anti-US constant drivel nicely.
I don’t think history or recent remarks by MANY European ‘leaders’ would agree with this remark of yours Martyn……….’He wasn’t tricked or deceived, (Putin chose this war)’.
He sure as hell did choose this war.
Putin has spent 30 years building up to it.
He wants to recreate the old ussr along with his ex KGB mates.
Read the book Putins’ people and how the KGB took back Russia by Christine Belton.
It can be borrowed from any library or ask your local one to get it in.
A very enlightening read.
Yeah bro. It’s the GOMMUNISTS
Her name is Catherine Belton (not Christine)and her publisher had to admit several inaccuracies (lies)concerning in particular Abramovich , with the book having to be revised, apologies from Belton and the publisher made to Abramovich and money paid to a charity of his choice
Over 1700 words had to be changed or deleted
“There is no military solution to this obscene wound….”
There is a military solution. That is for the people of Ukraine to liberate themselves from the invader.
The sooner that is done the better. Western weapons will speed that result.
Exactly.
The Ukraine should be given a batch of ATACMS missiles immediately to cut off the Kersh Bridge and knock out ammo dumps and command structures. It would end the war in a month. The problem is western dithering.
Lack of weapons actually, nothing left to supply, all used, destroyed by the Russians.
If Putin’s motives can be described as that of a man merely seeking self-aggrandizement, then the same could be said for much of the rhetoric on TDB. As keyboard warriors comment on events, often in terms far removed from their real ability to know, they risk forgetting that real people, mothers and fathers, wives, sons and daughters, cities and towns, farms and villages are being destroyed in these events. Imagination is one of the great advantages we have over other living things but it’s no substitute for research into the facts. As Professor Neil deGrass Tyson famously said; “One of the great challenges of this world is to know enough to think you’re right, but not enough to know you’re wrong”.
“….real people, mothers and fathers, wives, sons and daughters, cities and towns, farms and villages are being destroyed in these events.” Malcolm Evans
They are not being killed by events they are being killed by the Russian Federation.
Real people, mothers and fathers, wives, sons and daughters, cities and towns, farms and villages are being destroyed by Russian Federation forces.
Supporters of Russia’s war against Ukraine use euphemisms to sanitise what the Russians are doing in Ukraine.
Russia is not fighting a war against Ukraine, – Russia is conducting a “Special Military Operation” in Ukraine”.
People aren’t being killed by Russian forces in Ukraine, – they are being ‘destroyed’ by “events” in Ukraine.
Makes me wonder Malcolm, the next time the Zionist forces bomb Gaza, will you be saying Palestinians were ‘destroyed’ by ‘events’ in Gaza.
The EU. That woman wearing a crown of 12 stars, clothed in the sun (Greenland flag), and the moon under her feet (Algerian, Tunisian, Libyan flags)… I’m going to try and drown her with WAR(ter)
But even with my buds China (Beast from out of the earth who talks like me) and the US (far right. Beast from out of the sea)… I know I’m going to LOSE
From what I understand the US designates some country destabilisation and regime change then calls Nato to recommend the 30 countries be among the “coalition of the willing” lest they be cast among the sanctioned in one way or another “unwilling”. Then a death and destruction advertisement is rolled out for the latest weapons. The regime change in 2014 was Ukraine. Next Putin. Then Xi.

“….many thousands of Russian speaking Ukranians were harmed and killed”
Unsubstantiated
Putin alleges that Ukraine is targeting – and killing – Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine, where Russian-backed rebel separatists have been fighting the Ukrainian government since 2014….
….Russian ambassadors have circulated a document at the U.N. claiming Ukraine is “exterminating the civilian population” in Donbas. Russian representatives have also spoken of mass killings of people in eastern Ukraine who speak Russian.”
But these Russian claims have been found by a number of observers to be baseless and even fabricated, serving only to justify a military intervention….
https://theconversation.com/putins-claims-that-ukraine-is-committing-genocide-are-baseless-but-not-unprecedented-177511
There is zero evidence that Russian speakers are persecuted in Ukraine.
Volodimyr Zelensky’s mother tongue is Russian.
Ukraine President Volodimyr Zelensky speaks to the Russian public in Russian.
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/videos/international/ukrainian-president-zelenskys-address-to-russian-people-goes-viral/videoshow/89829108.cms
Though the persecution of Russian speakers in Ukraine is a propaganda staple, it has zero basis in fact.
Odessa is a Russian speaking city that has been constantly bombed by Russian Federation forces.
The one attacking Russian speakers in Ukraine is the Russian Federation.
Russian speakers in Ukraine tell Russian Federation troops, to Fuck Off, in Russian.

In just 9 days in 2014 , Ukrainian forces killed 16 civilians in the Rebel Donbas
https://www.hrw.org/news/2014/07/24/ukraine-unguided-rockets-killing-civilians
But nothing to see here eh Pat
The Ukrainians are beyond reproach, corruption a minor hiccup ,burning of Russian Ukrainians in Odessa by Ukrainian nationalists likely crisis actors. And no one has been prosecuted …so most likely didnt happen , eh Pat?
Russian False Flags Comically easy to debunk

Yeah, its absolutely fine to speak Russian
https://thepressunited.com/updates/ukrainian-mayor-fined-again-for-using-russian/
One Mayor was fined for not using Ukraine in official government documents.
A bit of a step down from Martyn Bradbury’s extraordinary but unsubstantiated claim made in his post above that;
“….many thousands of Russian speaking Ukranians were harmed and killed”
And would you believe it Russia has the very same law proscribing the use of foreign words even, (let alone whole statements), in official documents.
https://www.rt.com/russia/571949-russia-limit-use-foreign-words/
And France as well.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toubon_Law#:~:text=The%20Toubon%20Law%20(full%20name,in%20some%20other%20commercial%20communication
Maybe Francesca you think banning foreign language use in official government statements and documents are an excuse for invasion and war, but most sane people don’t, and recognise this bullshit for what it is. A poor excuse to conduct a predatory war of imperial aggression and conquest.
Your claim that “….many thousands of Russian speaking Ukranians were harmed and killed” is unsubstantiated is unsubstantiated.
A cursory look at Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualties_of_the_Russo-Ukrainian_War) shows that around 14000 people (fighters and civilians) were killed between 2014 and 2022. Anid if you think Wiki can tell all sorts of lies check out citation [10] from the UNHRC here: https://ukraine.un.org/sites/default/files/2022-02/Conflict-related%20civilian%20casualties%20as%20of%2031%20December%202021%20%28rev%2027%20January%202022%29%20corr%20EN_0.pdf
Sadly, The Daily Blog has been one of the victims of the conflict.
Just bomb them all back to the stone age.
