  1. I might need to go to the doctor for my lips and am thinking of wearing a face shield, but would like a clear mask as well.

Does anybody know where to buy a clear mask in NZ (either a physical store – I live in Auckland, but can travel – or online store) ?

The only ones I can find in NZ are from commercial suppliers and internationally the delivery time is up to 3 weeks.

Obviously they aren’t as effective as N95s/surgical masks, but it would be better than nothing.

  2. This Gaurav Sharma thing is one gigantic fuckup! Watching the Nation, the person making the most sense is Matt McCarten. But even then there are some really worrying aspects to it.
The absolute disdain for the OIA seems to have grown over time. At the time of its inception it was regarded as an example for open government which the public have a right to expect in a democracy. Politicians and public servants alike now just seek to circumvent it as their default poistions.
And then of course, EVEN with such a huge mandate, Labour have been sluggish in implementation in policy – everything from building houses, to rectifying the problems with OT, NZTA dysfunction, and getting on with sensible immigration policy. Always put off till tomorrow what you could do today! including employment matters.
I would have ZERO sympathy for GS IF he was a list MP. He’s not. He’s there to represent the interests of his electorate – so you would expect that the Labour hierarchy might sensibly listen to any concerns he might have. He’s not there as a filler to make up the numbers.
Someone is going to have to be thrown under the bus now. Should it be the elected politician, or senior public master of the universe public servants, Or maybe an emotional junior staffer.
We didn’t need to get to this, but sure a shit you can see why nothing meaningful gets done – whether its child povvidy, homelessness, abuse in state care, or pretty much anything that might be considered progressive.

    • Sick of hearing about Gaurav Sharma, it seems like an indicator to where NZ is going, aka minor concerns blown out of proportion while much more serious problems that effect people’s health and lives remain outside of meaningful public debate and media.

      Agree 100% with

    • OnceWasTim. Maybe he IS there to make up the numbers, but yes it is a wow of a stuff-up.

At the time “ Hit&Run” was published, a Lower Hutt denizen wrote to the DomPost saying that Nicky Hager should be addressing New Zealand’s road toll, rather than concerning himself with foreigners in another country. That fact that the road toll wasn’t the issue Hager was responding to, didn’t matter. Similarly, Dr Sharma is seemingly reacting to LP bullying and its apparent concomitant issues, and he is being criticised for not speaking out about poverty, homelessness, or other government cop-outs.

It shouldn’t have gotten this far, but if Gaurav Sharma does get thrown under the Clapham omnibus, at least he has quite a self-respecting occupation to return to, and unlike some, he won’t have to join the ranks of estate agents, gigolos, or flunkies on community boards trying to look important.

      • I probably should have proof read my earlier comment a little better ‘cos you know – reading glasses now required and bloody arthritis setting in, but my God – it’s a stuff up alright.
I thought we’d reached peak corporate style managerialism a while back, but there’s obviously a bit more time for it to run before it disappears up itself under its own weight.
A lot of what was said stretches credibility. Both the Mexican and the COS should probably go (the latter if Labour want to continue to portray JA as the Golden Girl).

Sharma would be much better back in the medical profession – martyrdom is so old fashioned these days

        • OnceWasTim I don’t know what the COS is, but if, by the Mexican you refer to the head of Parliamentary Services, I just don’t like the look of him, and also bear in mind that persons from different ethnic and political traditions, may not necessarily be in tune with the practicalities and the nuances of the long- standing fairly successful Westminster system of government under whose aegis our own governance has developed – apart from the more recent secret agenda kept hidden from Mr Peters and you, me, and the chap in the fish’n’chip chipper.

As an ex-public servant you’ll know that there are a thousand ways of getting rid of unwanted colleagues but what is happening here may be simple ineptitude, and not just on one person’s part.

  3. You have to be concerned about how NZ white collar criminals like Eric Watson who like to taunt the SEC and and IRD…

He has been convicted for tax evasion in NZ https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/384551/eric-watson-s-cullen-group-avoided-51m-in-tax-high-court-confirms

This ‘nice Kiwi guy’ Sarcasm, who hides behind his mum for asset evasion and drives his ex wife to commit suicide while leaving her virtually penniless in a divorce settlement.

His creditors seem to be looking for the money that the courts have already awarded, while Eric Watson mocks them and remains a free man in hiding!

White collar crime is minimised in NZ and our white collar crims are full of arrogance!

  4. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/473195/firefighters-union-on-course-for-another-strike-fenz-applies-for-bargaining-talks
Minister for Internal Affairs Jan Tinetti said it was critically important the country had an effective fire service.
“I’m critically aware of the welfare issues that firefighters have raised and they need addressing with some urgency and so I have made my expectations clear
but again I have a very very narrow remit just because of the way that FENZ do operate as an independent crown entity,” Tinetti said.

Government can’t do anything properly huh! Break up government departments and privatise services or give them their own expensive management and what do you get, people with $ in their eyeballs who don’t look after trained professional staff, and grind volunteers down who keep turning up out of a sense of duty and the camaraderie amongst the officers. Pity there isn’t more money spent on the workers and a few office people doing the bookwork and rotas and ACC and medical liaison and the Deputy Minister for emergency services or something look after the rest, as virtual CEO and reporting to Tinetti. Wouldn’t be foolproof, but we are fools not to try. Keep on doing what you’ve been doing and get….shabby.

  5. https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/the-house/audio/2018854386/shape-your-own-parliament-the-standing-orders-review
very three years, as we near another parliamentary election, MPs begin to ponder tinkering with parliament’s rules – the Standing Orders.
It’s not a coup in the making, it’s perfectly normal.
Changes to parliament’s rules are agreed before each election so that no-one involved knows who will be in government when they take effect. That keeps it more even-handed.

The process actually began a few months ago when the Standing Orders Committee (which looks after these things) asked everyone for ideas about what could be improved. Really, everyone; you and me included.

Shape your own parliament – what if we could – what would be allowed to choose out of a narrow band of possibilities? 3 ply toilet paper instead of the cheapest one-ply?? Perhaps we could have a square parliament where ideas didn’t fo round and round without end, and walls are papered in Round-to-its.

Or could we have different Speakers. They would have to have experience, understanding though and not be chosen just by race, or youth, or whatever ism abounds.
