U.S. venue cancels comedian Dave Chappelle’s show following backlash
A U.S. venue cancelled Dave Chappelle’s stand-up show just hours before he was due on stage on Wednesday, after critics lamented the scheduled gig following controversy over the comedian’s jokes about transgender people.
In a statement on its website, First Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota said Chappelle’s show would moved to the city’s Varsity Theater, where the U.S. comedian is also due to perform on Thursday and Friday.
First Avenue had announced the Chappelle show earlier this week, drawing criticism on social media.
Chappelle drew a backlash last year for material in his Netflix comedy special “The Closer” that some in the LGBTQ+ community said ridiculed transgender people. His supporters viewed it as a cry against cancel culture. read more

It is more important to the uber woke that Chappelle be cancelled than fighting poverty and climate change. Their war on comedians is a cultural battle because mockery poses an existential threat to their validity.
Censorship of Art denies space for criticism, the woke battle so hard to control speech because they understand the importance of narrative dominance via social media. Their activism identity is measured in likes and retweets within their echo chambers.
It’s a hollow market of performative theatre that gives too much endorphin hits to stop.
As populism rises and cultural backlashes manifest, this disconnect and polarisation will only grow.
When comedians have become our enemy, I think we have misdiagnosed who the threat is.

It seems as though it is an even worse crime for an organization to give a platform to opinions deemed unacceptable than it is to give the opinions. I guess this is logical. We believe in free speech but we don’t want you to have a place to exercise that right.
Restart the soapbox tradition. Have the equivalent of Hyde Park corners in every town where people can talk about things that should be aired for at least 15 minutes even if they are regarded as OTT, police can be called. No attacks can be made, they can’t be drowned out by people, vehicle noise, upturned stereos, and if roadworks or building is going on, another suitable place will be allocated by officialdom.

First Avenue were likely threatened with further cancellations and so they cancelled Dave to preserve their livihood. I don’t know this for sure, but I think it is a reasonable hunch, especially given the tone of their announcement.

When a movement led by mainly affluent white liberals attempts to cancel one of the most influential black comedians and social commentators of his generation, then social justice has become a parody.
One of the important things that makes a person good to know, a good citizen too, is having a sense of humour for the ridiculous, for the incongruous in human life, and to be able to laugh at oneself while still feeling proud of one’s own abilities, being and personality. When you feel balanced about those matters then a dig from a comedian doesn’t matter, you can withstand an incautious comment, or agree and say that may be so but you don’t want to know that, or if it’s rude – complain. The situation with wokeness is that certain people are trying to take over our world, our thoughts and our talk, so they are always right and set themselves up to judge how people should talk and think. Yet there is no return right against them -it’s dictatorship.

Why so much attention to wokeness? I now don’t trust anybody at first look, person or business. Seeing that robotisation is advancing and becoming affordable, once it is popularised and become the norm, the banks will shut down or be ‘manned’ by mostly robots with a few humans to manage them ie make sure their circuits are in good order. Humans will be regarded as too difficult and expensive to employ! And this fever of emotional stuff which has widened from real concerns exponentially will be a whiplash for all.
The people calling for fairer treatment of the vulnerable, sensitive – they should be on to the chld abuse revelations also Oranga Tamariki, standing outside their door, demanding parental rights to be home and not working for peanuts with their kids lacking caring and modelling while at a vulnerable age. But it’s all short-sighted me me for young adults and those who are sly. The world will end with a bang, a whimper and a sigh that we couldn’t use just 10% of the combined wisdom of thoughtful people that has come down through thousands of centuries to us.
