Un-fucking-believable…
Sale of the century: 55-60% of Auckland’s large-scale state land to be sold for private ownership
It’s the sale of the century: 230ha to 270ha of Auckland public or state house land is being sold to private or sharemarket-listed developers, to build free-market homes across the city.
…at a time when we are hitting a new high of 27,234 waiting on housing emergency lists, the Government is green lighting an enormous state housing privatisation campaign to sell properties to corporate landlords with the promise that the market will somehow save us.
Labour entered Parliament with 5000 on the emergency housing list, it’s now 27, 234.
Their Housing response in the budget was a joke.
Housing
- $221m for Affordable Housing Fund
- $1b to support public and transitional housing
- $355m for redesigning emergency housing system
- $75m for Homelessness Action Plan
The $221m for Affordable Housing Fund is to get the children of the middle class into their first home. The other three amounts are for state housing and social housing providers and if taken together ($1.43b) would build just 5,000 homes – in practice a hell of a lot less.
…so the solution now is selling 270ha of public land to private interests to enable corporate landlords.
That’s Labour’s solution?
A mass privatisation agenda to fund state housing???
This is so deplorable, where the fuck are the Ministers? And why the fuck aren’t they belong grilled?
When the Left understands what they’ve done here, there will be an eruption of anger.
I smell the mediocrity of Megan Woods!

Thatcherism.
In 1996, the Ministry of Defence decided to sell off its housing stock. The financier Guy Hands bought it up in a deal that would make his investors billions – and have catastrophic consequences for both the military and the taxpayer
https://www.theguardian.com/news/2017/apr/25/mod-privatise-military-housing-disaster-guy-hands
How’s the NZ business profit led rents such as $1200 p/w for a motel room working out for the woke who wanted it, renters and Labeen?
Meghan Woods is like the puppy that shits on your floor then looks at you excitedly and wags its tale. She has absolutely no comprehension of the mess she has made.
John Minto has said as much.
What the fuck is it with Labour? Asset sales have made us all poorer but it’s like the 1980’s never left us. I thought we’d moved beyond that but disappointingly, no.
National or Labour. They’re are virtually indistinguishable. Both lost. Both out of date.
It is diabolical alright, but to be expected from the majority neo Blairite NZ Labour Caucus.
The Kiwibuild scheme was flawed–being aimed at middle class rather than working class or homeless people–and it never happened substantially because developers and suppliers basically went on strike and refused to cooperate with the Govt. with the required price caps.
Developers want open slather and their way only, and now this cowardly MAJORITY MMP Govt. has capitulated to them. Shameful.
What have nearly 40,000 existing home owners in Auckland done? They own surplus homes which they keep empty.
Generation Rent & Student loan need to wake up and get organised for 2023–and no, sheepshaggers, I do not mean Naztos–they will make things even worse.
As Kiwibuild involving selling newbuilds to first home buyers it could never reach any large scale – not unless they assisted buyers with a government equity share.
They could have also sold to baby boomers downsizing and those moving up from flats/apartments to a first family home.
Anything to get to the sort of scale required for factory construction and maybe foreign partners.
Bhahhahahhahaha.
Poor Man’s Gordon Brown has run out of money and Beetroot has said no more money printing. 50% of businesses are behind on their PAYE and GST payments. Doesn’t matter if your accounts say you earned tax dollars if you can’t collect it! Grunter needs to raid the pantry.
When the truth comes out how poorly Robber(tson) has managed the economy the majority and even the left will welcome Te Reo and his collection of beltway retards and failed middle management ideologues. Rimmer will be licking his chops.
In other news Woke Coster is moments away from saying he’s sorry for being a man……….
When you own the land you have the country by the balls. You can do what you like. Forever.
Immigration exodus is all NZ can expect.
Kids today are so uneducated and bubble-ised that we cant expect any true people power to make a difference. Climate and micro agressions they’ll march for but economy and the future of the country isnt in their wheelhouse.
Unless we have a change away from our current political system (Ending career politicians) then there is no hope for NZ.
I keep envisaging a 5 year term where we vote for elected functional boards (or perhaps regional boards) who are voted for their expertise and are then responsible for developing, maintaining and rolling out strategy in that area for both short term and long term. Every 5 or 6 years we get to have a say about who will be on the boards and which strategies or work programmes NZers see as most important. Every Board member gets a performance score for their term in terms of meeting key objectives or similar so that when we vote we get a clearer idea of who is delivering and what they are bringing to the table. On a more macro level, NZ’s get to pick via referenda or other process which items are top of the pile for the next period like say affordable housing and education etc.
There has to be a better way than what we have now which I would describe as slow death. I dont much want to go but my kids and I all have Aussie citizenship so we keep looking at it.
One has to wonder if theres any connection between this and Jacinda meeting with Blackrock
Could be that they intend selling it off because Housing New Zealand have been spectacularly incapable of managing the properties under their control?
Just a thought…
Labour are making that prospect very likely. And easy!
SERIOUSLY!!!
Greens, te MP, and any other potential coalition partners (even such as Maff Ranji’s) need to start stating what their red lines and bottom lines will be. At least within the next 6 months
I’m not holding my breath – with the expectation that things are going to have to get worse before they get better (which I’ve been harping on about – probably since the last time I visited TS = must be knocking on over 2 years by now)
I used to wonder whether it was arrogance, or muppetry, or public service capture and various other things that have caused Labour to go all tits up. I now know it’s a combination of all of the above.
Sorry @ Bert, (and I appreciate your cheer leading), but it is getting to be serious shit, 18 or so months out
And btw – people ARE watching, AND remembering, AND experiencing – over things like supermarket reform and all that little Garbak franchisee shit that goes with it; the promises made and not delivered over energy and oil companies STILL playing silly bugger; Oranga Tamariki and Health.
Grant is not the man he professes to be (as but one example), and pretty much all of them now under the capture of senior public service self-survival interest have shown they’re going to play the game till the last man down. (MORE FUCKING FOOL THEM if their aim is to stay in power and represent the electorates’ interests) – which it no longer is apparently
Jesus – let’s not even start on Faaaaaafoi, or Woods or a few others when there are one or two in the background that could shit all over the pair of them
FUCK it’s pathetic!
Has Mahuta got some family in Real Estate?
That’s a goody!
Not even a pretence of a left wing political party is on offer in NZ.
S.U.P. needs to step back up.
Absolutely disgusting. These beasts, these traitors in the mold of Lange, deserve nothing but hatred.
But always remember. Despite the lies of the neoliberal dogs, what is once undone can ALWAYS be made whole.
Sell our assets that belong to the working man, belong to the nation, sell them for nothing? We can take them back for nothing as well, to hell with the ‘private property’ of profiteers. And try the culprits for their crimes against the people.
“That’s Labour’s solution?”
Incredible isn’t it.
It is just too hard for them to think of any good solutions to the problem. Or more likely they have some better solutions, but are totally incapable of implementing them. They don’t even know HOw they might implement them.
Totally incompetent governance. Incompetent, inexperienced, unfocused, poor thinking, distracted management (re TDB article ‘how not to rebuild a hospital),
Idealogical, impractical, totally lacking real world experience or knowledge, weak, unfair, racist, non supportive of the working family…
Apart from that though, they’re great!
Here’s another example same process.
160,000 people in Aotearoa immigrants on temporary work visas, or work visas…
Incompetent decision making and implementation leads to a crisis for the work visa holders and the Immigration Department.
Labour’s ‘solution’? Panic, put it in the too hard basket as they can’t think of a solution, let alone have any knowledge of how make it work, so…
Give all 160,000 a residence visa!
Yay. Problem solved.
Hahaha hahaha.
That’s what happened isn’t it?
A couple of the lovely lady staff (one Indian one Chinese) at my kids’ daycare were very happy about that. And they deserved too. Good, nice people.
But jeez Wayne. That’s their solution?
Mind you, we did ‘elect’ (37% 2017?) an inexperienced leader with nil real world experience and nil experience manage a highly complex organisation of interlinked highly complex organisations…
Most or a lot of her colleagues same.
Such an announcement will impact on the market. Land for development prices should fall, but developers would perceive greater risk of being exposed (higher cost of finance, slower construction and less guarantee of making a profit on sale).
It’s as if they are developing a bi-partisan policy for National to administer – the opportunity for land banking (corporate and private) and flipping is obvious.
But the ultimate message is the lack of any ambition to increase the state house stock by building.
We had better hope they plan to buy up 25,000 homes to cull the waiting list, or the 2017-2023/26? government will go down as one with a less than impressive performance in housing.
