Entertainment has become a huge part of our lives. In New Zealand three out of four play games to entertain themselves. All types of games are popular amongst people of all ages and genders. It’s interesting to see how the last couple of years have turned us into social gamers.

No less than 73% of New Zealanders play video games of some kind. A recent survey shows that three out of four like to play games – and often with each other. New Zealanders like to play socially. The stereotype of some young man sitting in a dark room is far from the truth. The survey shows the demographics of gamers in 2022 vary tremendously. For example, in the group of 35–44-year-olds no less than 81% like to play video games.

These numbers include all kinds of games – from video games to online casino. Many different types of games are getting increasingly popular every year. Online casinos for example are continuously more popular all over the world. Entertainment is playing a bigger and bigger role in our lives. At the same time, the opportunities to be entertained by all kinds of things are increasing all the time.

Women and men play equally

It’s interesting to see that the age groups are so diversely represented in this survey. It is people in all age groups that like to entertain themselves with games in their daily lives. Also, the number of women who like to play games is the same as men. Many have an idea that men play much more online than women, but this is not a reflection of the truth. The survey also shows that there has been an increase in women who play games of 4% since 2010.

It is quite fascinating to see that the group of older women actually play longer than the group of older men. The group that takes the cake though are younger boys, which perhaps doesn’t come as the biggest surprise. It is quite astonishing that they in average spend 161 minutes daily playing video games.

Gaming device or phones

Smartphones play a leading role in most of the games being played. Many people prefer to play on their phones for several reasons. Mobile games are better developed and today the quality of these games can easily be compared to console games. However, 75% of the households in New Zealand have a gaming console in their home.

Playing together

The last couple of years have been a massive factor in the increase of gaming habits. But it’s also interesting to see how social gaming has become. Most gamers like to play with others the most. Many people play with their friends, partners, or children. But there are also huge communities online where people like to play with strangers. The social element of games clearly plays a huge role in the popularity of gaming.
