There has been an enormous amount of pressure behind the scenes to convince Labour that the Hate Speech fiasco would be the nail in Labour’s coffin.
Faafoi now admitting that the law won’t be passed this term is recognition that they know they can’t win this.
Drop a drip of power onto your average Middle Class Identity Politics Spinoff/Stuff subscriber and they mutate into a thousand Tiny dictators, a phalanx of little sisters whose eyes gleam with the same Dogma Cult of Mao’s Cultural Revolution.
What we are seeing is cult of woke fascism fixated on cancelling or deplatforming all that triggers them.
The glee with which the Woke will purge everything for their grim Identity Politics utopia should cause all Left wing people of conscience to recoil from this cultural virus and turn on it first before we take out National and ACT!

I agree the 50year law needs changing and there should be an expansion of anti discrimination protections but criminalizing speech to satisfy the Woke’s low threshold for hate in a triggered outrage culture is a recipe for fucking disaster!
Look at how badly the Middle Class Marxists screaming NAZI damaged the wider Left over the Dumb Lives Matter protest on Parliament’s Lawns, triple that if the Hate Speech Law proceeded!
Incitement to violence is a clear threshold and we allow the Human Rights Commission to act as a filter for that bigotry by bringing people together to educate and attempt to resolve discrimination issues, but the Woke don’t want a filter, they want a weapon!
They saw this Hate Speech Law as a means to smite the dirty filthy racists, the evil transphobes and raping misogynists.
This wasn’t social policy, for them it’s a revenge fantasy!
Their daily to do list would look like this

-yoga
-self actualize while taking selfie for Instagram
-correct others on their te Reo pronunciation
-cycle to drop off recycling while militantly supporting all Womens sport
-call police and report a misuse of pronouns as a hate crime
-get into Twitter argument about Meghan Markle living her best life, report to Police as hate crime and try to get the person sacked
-juice cleanse
-bake bread & be present with gratitude
Throwing someone in jail for 3years using a law defined by the police is not a liberal progressive democracy no matter how noble the life goals!
It’s gotten to the stage where I can’t tell the difference between a woke lynch mob and a sensible sentencing lynch mob!
For fucks sake, we are the NZ Left dammit! We don’t shy away from debate! Our forefathers bleed on foreign dirt against the Nazis in World War 2 so that no citizen should be forced to live under the tyranny of Fascism! Our forefathers fought for the belief of the individual protected before the might of the State, that no Government should abuse the gifts of Democracy by enslaving its own people!
Everyone in a liberal progressive democracy deserves the same agency. Muslims, Queer or Trans people shouldn’t feel abused and threatened or frightened of simply being in public. Graeme Edgler has written extensively upon this and makes excellent points on how we could balance freedom of speech with the right to not feel threatened.
The debate must be focused on anti-harassment, not free speech!
Adding gender identity and religion to the existing discrimination legislation is absolutely righteous, our fellow citizens and comrades deserve to live in a society that can’t discriminate against them!
The solutions here are beefing up and expanding our current systems to ensure people aren’t harassed or discriminated against, the solution is not handing the power to censor opinions to the State!
We must also be focused on better public broadcasting and more regulations on social media (including taxes to fund that journalism) to stop the algorithms from weaponising debate.
If Government wants to make NZ more ‘socially cohesive’ they should build more houses, use a wider range of taxes against corporations and fully fund mental health, education and public health – they shouldn’t implement blasphemy laws and criminalising misuse of pronouns!
Labour backing down is such an enormous relief, the only winner of this would have been ACT.

Good news. I could see it being so divisive, and had myself received some weird censures already from certain commenters ready and willing to challenge and use blogs and other message exchanges. like trampolines – higher ever higher. Thinking, too many opinions would be baked with white flour not the whole grain that I prefer.
And people go looking for things to object to. Perhaps if a new party gets formed it will be the Objectors and Protesters Party, MOP for short with the M coming from Massive. (Slogan – Clean up Sleazy Politics NOW.)

Yeah it was a trap set by National. English refused to remove the blasphemy law leaving that to Labour – hoping they would replace it with a hate speech law. And as proud custodians of Churchili’s England National/ACT would fight to defend free speech/western civilisation.
If they had slipped it through before the 2020 election – the police warnings/investigations/prosecutions since would have made the “mandate” protests on parliament grounds much much worse.

I’d say Labours internal polling is terrifying them – switcheroo on cost of living crisis and fuel tax, hate speech walk back (or is it? And who’s going to vote for them knowing they still want to bring it in next term) and news that after refusing twice, Ardern now wants to meet with Groundswell.

When I’ve been to (obviously) restrictive countries you find that everything is illegal. It’s not that you’re constantly being arrested it just means that if you rock the boat there are million ways to stop you with some trivial law.

Nope Labeen woke have not given up and just waiting to get into power to pass it, next term, by the look of it!
When you can’t build houses or roads or regulate supermarkets or fuel or carbon or power or banks, I guess what is left for woke committees to do is to put more woke management on top of the existing structures and give themselves something to do. Normal government functioning seems well beyond their abilities.
The only reason many in NZ didn’t die of Covid at the rates of other countries is that government unearthed some sane person who was actually qualified in medicine to advise them. Luckily the woke committee members were all on lockdown and only just got organised.
Now the woke are let out of lockdown and mastered the technology to communicate with other international woksters and right wingers, they are busy loading NZ hospitals with Covid cases, and opening the borders for more free medical care for all so they can have their long awaited holidays. (Well let’s face it, plenty of woke managed to leave NZ taking up MIQ spaces as a priority to visit their families and go on international talk fests with large entourages).
Now we can finally fill the prisons and courts up, not with the increasing violent offenders, family courts feuds, and financial crimes, but with evil speakers who make bad jokes, alarm people and don’t agree with the wokesters world views! Look forward to a 2 -3 year wait for court appearances, as justice stalls further in NZ.
Don’t expect the police to turn up to your burglary, fraud, or violent crime. Security resources are being siphoned off for woke police. Likewise the SIS won’t worry about violent terrorists coming to NZ, it’s the micro aggressive middle class of NZ that need surveillance on! Like the Green Party says, it’s actually their fault, not the terrorists. NZ is so woke and virtue gathering when terrorists try to leave to fight jihard, our immigration refuse to let them go and allows them more opportunities to kill Kiwis instead. Meanwhile more people in poverty in NZ, get fewer resources as they are reserved for the worried, woke, well, worry.
Woke are fighting to get the dumbest people into NZ that other countries pass on. The woke can then employ their dumb lives matter brigade as red guards to join the gangs in public humiliations, cultural revolution style! Yipee!

What a cynical group of career politicians these are. They are like real estate agents who, when its a bull market fail to return your call as they are too important and busy to converse with a grub like me, but when the houses are not selling they are all nicey nicey and your best friend again. While I agree with your statement “Muslims, Queer or Trans people shouldn’t feel abused and threatened or frightened of simply being in public” I do not see any harm in being able to politely disagree with them. Before covid there were often JW or Morman people visiting who wanted to share their beliefs. While it felt like banging your head against a brick wall I would show them the faults with their beliefs which then resulted in those visitors suddenly deciding to leave.
While the same-sex/transexual situation gets weirder every year I have not seen any scientific explanation (chemical, biology, DNA) to prove that difference which leaves the obvious explanation that it is all in the mind. Since we are born with a sinful nature which is expressed in different ways among people that to me is a rational explanation. Having said that society gets to decide the rules it wants to live by & since most have rejected the concept of a loving creator God there is no sense in trying to punish those who disagree with Him.
