Strange how the social welfare system in NZ seems to be oppressive much of the time yet mistakenly enabled two people to go north from an Auckland under Delta lockdown. The two women who decided to proceed with their plans to travel and brought the whole area into a lockdown situation, are not to be punished.
This two should have to make up for this infringement in some way. Otherwise they are just being patronised as poor silly people who can’t manage their own lives, aren’t they? More autonomy yes, but more responsibility goes with the territory; being an adult gives you grey hairs as well as choice, understanding is supposed to go along with it.

Seven children is a big burden for a solo mother and I hoipe that she doesn’t have to wait more than a year or so for a suitable home so they can all be together. It was interesting to hear the matter-of-fact way that the Department dealt with her request, looking at the practicqalities but not able to offer anything so she had at least emergency accommodation. And a downpour was imminent. We now are reliant on charity in NZ – ‘the kindness of strangers’. We are getting into a Samaritan situation here in this country. But there isn’t enough kindness to match the need please note Labour Party, let’s see some labour from you Party leaders.
And can this woman be offered free contraceptives. It is too much for someone in a poor economic and social situation, to have seven children in a society that is as poorly run as ours, and also on a planet that is over-populated.
It isn’t a matter of personal freedom any more, we have to pitch in and be thinking adults together because the outcomes of our incontinence with everything till now, are going to become more dire, homeless now, what next to wring our hearts. It might be that the people at the bottom could drive society in a new direction. Perhaps now the protests are over, they would like to write 200 words to the Finance Minister about their ideas to reshape society to make things better, and what they would like help with to advance that.
It would turn all the brouhaha to something positive! It would be good practice for the men and women at the top to think about all the citizens, and face being human – what people ‘at the coalface’ need and find sufficient to have a good life. Call it ‘The Good Life Project’ and follow up on it for hundreds of low-income parents in particular. Then sack half the Misery of Sad Development as someone with experience named it. The other half must take some refresher courses in how to help people physically and psychologically and give the people grants each year for helpful stuff that do not need to be repaid.

The forest is dying before their eyes they say, and these are dedicated people. Does nothing get done by authorities till it’s on a knife edge?

Why go in with flag flying now. Let us just do our usual lacklustre approach. Our protest is only the end of the world for us. And even we cope with it with a mild expletive. My fish and chip supplier would like to see more interest being taken in the state of treatment of Myanmar people, the ones who have been voted ‘the most likely to have something unpleasant happen to them.’ It was very romantic for her and her husband. They met in a refugee camp, got married and started a family. And they are terrific people; bad things happen to good people away from the Russian border.
