Life of Brian would be banned under NZs new hate speech laws – Why we must all break this law

‘the incitement of disharmony against religion, based on an intent to stir up, maintain or normalise hatred, through threatening, abusive or insulting communications’.

If NZ passes religious hate speech laws, I’m afraid we all have no choice but to immediately break that law for the sake of our Democracy!

Remember, this new religious hate speech law will specifically target ‘hate’ towards religious beliefs???

But many religious beliefs are ridiculous. Under this law, ‘The Life of Brian’ would be considered hate speech…

The Catholic archdiocese has called Life of Brian a “blasphemy”, adding that it was a “crime against religion which holds the person of Christ up to comic ridicule.”

The Jewish groups are equally damning. They regard the film as “grieviously insultlng,” and have described it as “a vicious attack on Judaism and the Bible, and a cruel mockery of Christian religious feelings as well.”

…I philosophically hate religion for many, many, many fucking good reasons, but because NZ is a liberal progressive democracy, I tolerate religion.

I tolerate Scientology, I tolerate the Exclusive Brethren & I tolerate those who believe in a magical invisible flying wizard for all their personal choices!

I also tolerate that they don’t pay tax – BUT I SURE AS FUCK refuse point blank to fear them!

This is a liberal progressive SECULAR Democracy, if you want to believe in crazy myths and crazy invisible magical flying beings, that is your total right to, but equally, it’s my right to mock those beliefs when they collide with my individual rights.

Blasphemy laws and gender identity hate speech isn’t a solution to a cascade intelligence failure by the entire NZ Intelligence agencies that led to a white supremacists terror attack.

We lose free speech to criticise religion? How the hell is that anything other than a victory for the terrorist?

  1. Blazing saddles – also hate speech today.

Satire plays an important role in life, now under threat as much as, freedom of speech and democracy.

They are taking away tolerance not adding to it, because the majority of people are tolerant to other people’s views, but if you disagree it should not be a crime!

  2. Seeing as all we non-believers are doomed to eternal damnation amid the fires of hell I cannot see why we are allowed a little piss taking now.
I seriously urge you all to follow my brethren and myself in worshipping the Great, Red bellied Fire snake who created all things.
AND do not confuse our faith with those heretical swine who follow the false idol of the great scarlet Fire Lizard( they really should be prosecuted, persecuted and prostituted).

  3. You’re correct Martyn. Nobody on the political spectrum likes this except maybe a woke copywriter with a manbun who works for the Spinoff.

This is an entirely authoritarian move by the government – most alarmingly it includes political speech, thus giving them the power to arrest their critics.

This country is going down fast

  4. “…incitement of disharmony against religion, based on an intent to stir up, maintain or normalise hatred, through threatening, abusive or insulting communications…”

Life Of Brian doesn’t seem to meet this test though as there’s no intent to do those things. The intent was comedy, however harsh it may have been.

    • Not according to these people…

Prefer going down slowly meself – but whatever floats yer boat.

  6. Calm down, this is great news.
The holy babble and coran are chock full of hate speech.
Use the legislation to have them banned.

  7. Didn’t the last census record more atheists than worshippers in NZ? And trending towards even more non religiosity? In the words of Andrew Little, the people have spoken (and should continue to speak).

  8. Yes we need to look at what has happened in the UK where an ex cop, Harry Miller was engaging in a debate on a proposed gender self I’d bill. Some of his tweets were pretty tasteless, but next thing a cop visits his workplace, and although he was told he hadn’t committed a criminal offence, his name went on a register of hate events. The register covid be visited by prospective employers. Harry Miller took the humberside police to court and won. The judge described the actions of the police as Orwellian.

  9. Life with Brian in an International hit, played in many countries and tens of thousands of DVD are out there. So how will NZ look backing primitive fear of religion and the hypocrisy of that position. DVD Burning festivals?

Such serious maters need deep though and discussion just as our spiritual shepherd demonstrates.

A shepherd of course tends to sheep. Some say its nice to be in the flock but they probably will get shorn or their sporran will loose weight.

    Ah well ignorance is bliss.

Joining a church or changing churches can be fun.
