There could be no other sentence handed down.
The terrorism this obscenity of a human being committed could only be punished by a sentence that stains him as much as his action stained us.
The desire to demonstrate to any other white supremacist that you will face the harshest of sentences for this kind of monstrous violence outweighs any technical considerations for mercy.
This tumour of a human being will be treated humanly, will have their rights respected, will be fed, housed and looked after medically for the rest of his natural life.
That is NZ mercy.
But NZ punishment? It will be until he dies.
We pay that life long imprisonment cost as the price of a decent progressive liberal democracy.
99% of the time, I am the first to call for prison reform and am the greatest advocate for redemption you will find. I have argued endlessly that our incarceration industry is counter productive and the worst social policy we have.
I advocate leniency and mercy in all things and believe radical prison reform is necessary.
However.
There are some actions that go beyond the individual. There are things so perverse, so wretched and such an anomaly to the values we hold dearest as a society, that nothing short of the most severe sentence is acceptable.
This most evil of mass murder is that exception to the rule, and we have no obligation higher than seeing him imprisoned for life and treated with the basic dignity all human beings intrinsically have.
We will show mercy while expressing our total repudiation to his deplorable act.
Now, let us never mention his name, let the sun never find his face. You are a shadow that all righteous people should shun.
You will be forgotten and the damage you caused will not be used to turn NZers against NZer, we are not what you tried to goad us into.
Your twisted philosophy will find no soil to be fertile here.

I can’t help but wonder about the mindset of the gunman in recent months. He’s done things that are not in keeping with what he’s about.
Almost every person charged with murder pleads not guilty, even when they are clearly guilty. The gunman also pleaded not guilty which created a scene of an even longer and more painful trial that everyone involved needed like stage 4 lymphoma. Then out of the blue, he changed his plea to guilty. Did he feel remorse? Did he just want out of solitary confinement and to have some prison privileges or had guilt arrived?
When it came out that the gunman would defend himself, the stage was set for him to unleash epic hate speech on a community already reeling. His decision not to speak at the trial was merciful from maggot excrement who’d previously displayed zero mercy even to a small child. Was that decision made after watching so many people give very powerful speeches and that further exposed all his inadequacies and filled him with dread and fear or was it an all too late act of mercy?
Whatever the case may be, there is no better argument for the death penalty than this individual. It’s my sincere hope that he ends up close by with NZ’s other most despicable murderer. William Bell. Both should be put down.

I believe forgiveness is an extremely personal thing. If you choose to forgive diabolical actions that is your prerogative. It’s ridiculous to demand the forgiveness of others or critique them for choosing not to forgive….for any reason.

@Jacindafan. Yes, I was also wondering why he changed his plea and how come he had nothing to say all the way. Even at the sentencing, when the judge asked him for comment, he said “No, thank you”. After such cold=blooded acts, he then went very quiet. I guess we will never know why.

Now that this man who committed this heinous crime has been severely punished, its time we had change in our legal and judicial system. When our whanau was prevented from saying what we wanted to, to our brothers killer. Our victim impact statements were heavily vetted and some of us were not permitted to say what we wanted to by our judge. Now is this fair? The crown lawyer made basic errors not once but at least three times and the detectives in charge were appalling. We in NZ need to start treating other victims with more compassion and understanding and we need to listen and start treating victims better.

The solution is to wake up and recognise that fighting civil wars along these lines is a diversion from the class war – that between the 80% that creates the wealth, and the 20% that lives of that wealth – which is the only war that the majority can win.

With the cuffs forcing him to invert the code gesture, it really just makes him look like even more of a colossal wanker.

He decided to wreak havoc on the Muslim community and in doing so thought he would become a hero for the rest of us. How twisted, depraved and sick is that. But he did not achieve this and he did not achieve his self-imposed perception of deity. What he did achieve though is tremendous support and love and respect throughout New Zealand for the Muslim community and the bringing of our communities even closer together.
I listened to some of the heart-felt victim statements read out in the court hearing and I had tears in my eyes. What courageous decent people they are and they reflect the decency of the entire Muslim community.
