Living in a country drenched in soft power propaganda in the form of Corporate Hollywood, I feel like I recognise New York landmarks better than my own neighbourhood.
Watching America twist itself into the self mutilation under Trump’s despicable rule is akin to domestic violence between family members you love.
The wretchedness he has enacted and inspired leaves you numb and forever reeling.
I am sitting on the edge of my seat watching what happens there next. Redemption or a doubling down on the great unraveling of America.
I really liked the Democratic National Conference last week. It reminded me of the power and truth and beauty of the promise of America I want to believe in.
Diverse, kind, generous.
It’s the America we all want to believe in.
And then came the Republican National Conference.
Jesus wept.
Crazy abortion conspiracies, absolutist religious orthodoxy, authority worship and out right lies about any opposition to their deeply flawed ideologies without a flicker of shame.
It was a cavalcade of political circus freaks who managed to sell malice as a scented candle.
What the Republican National Conference has helped me understand is how utterly in denial Republicans are to any of the damage Trump has caused and the fantasy alternate reality they inhabit.
It’s like a giant Cosplay party on meth with no consequences and loaded machine guns.
The Democrats represent the promise of America as it wishes to be.
The Republicans brutally offer America as it is.
Bloated, gleefully ignorant and violently parochial.
America is Trump.

Democratic party are miles away from what I knew when I lived in America during the 1990’s Martyn.
Since then it seems now that the Democratic government has switched to a soft style of Socialism with tinges of autocratic governance appearing now.
I recall while living in Florida for 7yrs from 1992 till late 1998 many times under a democratic government of Bill Clinton the favorite term used to depict the mood of life there was”live and let live” signaling that leave us alone to live free.
Our family loved that saying and do today but the new democratic style has hardened over there now as the Democrats want control over freedom of speech in schools and universities.
I am worried about the future under them as it feels very different now.
I appreciate you don’t like republicans. No issues there.
I’m just confused at your adoration of the Democratic Party. Is it Biden’s 40 years in the system? Is it Harris’s record as California AG? Was it Bill ‘Lolita express’ Clinton’s speech?

You must want that really bad Martyn to be able to kid yourself that there might be a change for the better in the US under Biden. Or to find anything but negativity and hatred of Trump in that Conference .

the difference is clearly illustrated by comparing the adresses given by michelle qbama and melania trump, the latter dignified & realistic despite three years of abuse .

He should & we all should because he would hopefully realize he needs to visit the room of mirrors and ask questions. these few paragraphs inidcate u have Trump derangement syndrome ….. biggly more biggly than anyone ever thought possible!
i say this because i had another look at the RNC & watched Ivanka T detail what Trump has done despite being impeded, insulted & impeached since he announced in 2016. i won’t list them all but the farce/irony is best illustrated by Trump’srejection & action to end the Biden endorsed mass incarceration justice system – yet BLM etc support Dems !
American media r not bound by truth and have become propaganda. Our govt/media have betrayed the nz public by either legislating, leaving out and lying about statistics & info citizens require to thrive.
eg still our media have not mentioned Trump has secured significant price reductions on epipen & insulin amongst others – surely newsworthy given the number of NZ’s who die early or needlessly because our govt will not/can not afford crtel prices.
