The latest abomination from WINZ

Carol from WINZ will see you now.

The horror of WINZ is once again laid bare with policy so draconian and counter productive, you just have to label it evil…

Minister orders probe after Work and Income reports mum to Ministry for Children after eviction notice
A mother of six says she was told she would be notified to child protection services if she moved into a motel due to an eviction notice.

Athena, whom the Herald agreed to identify only by her first name, said the threat as punitive, insulting and unfair.

“I pretty much want to sleep in my car instead of going to them for accommodation.

“It’s degrading to us as parents. It’s like our choice that we wanted to go into a motel. That’s the last place we want to live …”

The Manuwera woman was sent a 90-day eviction notice on February 13 for her private rental that was paid for through Work and Income. The landlord wanted the house back.

She went to Work and Income the next day to discuss her options. She had bad credit, so finding her own rental was difficult. Athena has been on the Housing NZ waiting list since mid-last year.

A manager explained that if she couldn’t find accommodation by May 20 she could get a motel room for herself and her children but Work and Income would have to notify the Ministry for Children – Oranga Tamariki.

…when WINZ aren’t chasing beneficiaries for outrageously cruel debt, when they aren’t threatening beneficiaries into committing suicide, when they aren’t degrading them and making the lives of the weakest and most vulnerable unbearable to the point they turn up and shoot staff, they are following policy whereby they dob the poor into the Ministry for Stealing Children because they are put into a Motel which is where WINZ send people who become homeless.

The counter productive madness of all of this would be funny if it weren’t so sick.

This is why the poor and the desperate run  mile rather than interact with the horror of our neoliberal welfare agencies.

It’s not just a policy thing, it is that these overworked, underfunded workers are so burnt out they have replaced compassion with sadism. At some stage, the new Government must stop being bullied by the PSA and purge the Public Service of  these burnt out workers because they are causing more damage than they are treating.

  1. Yes when is change going to come Jacinda? Do you not care about the state of our welfare service? I see you have just moved into a nice new house. Well maybe you could have a closer look at WINZ. I mean hey you have been in government for a while now and i thought that would an area you would look into. Because as soon as we have another financial crash again people are going to need those services. Unemployment rates will sky rocket… Now your liberal friends won’t want to be treated sadistically now will they…

  2. There’s a simple yet uncomfortable truth to this vile thing.
The narcissism polluted Ministry of Sadism’s there because we let them be there.
What are we going to do about it?
Throw a Thugby Game and 20 K people turn up all a-whoop. Tell 20 K people a defenceless woman and her kids are being bullied by the very system that she pays for, one way or another, and no one will turn up. Except perhaps me and thee.
Professor Stanley Milgram must be spinning in his grave.

  3. Come on, we have a new Minister (Carmel Sepuloni), we have a ‘new’ government (Labour and NZ First Coalition, supported by mild mannered Greens), do you really believe that WINZ are still so ‘cruel’?

I thought we will have a more compassionate government, so while old systems are still in place, could they not give some directives to stop any unreasonable and bizarre steps to be taken now?

Or do we just get nice talk and too little action?

  4. Not peculiar to WINZ/Msd.
Unfortunately I had hopes Labour woul realise what a shameful state our public service has become (snr & some muddle management).
It seems though they want to make things hard for themselves

  5. The entire welfare system needs to be restructured – Universal Basic Income, non-commercial state provided housing, access to fee wrap around resources- health, education and support services. Paid for through higher levels of progressive taxation. When will this happen?
There needs to be a major shift in how the general voting public view and understand poverty and beneficiaries. By and large the new Labour government is reflecting what it believes to be the majority view of a “female beneficiary with 6 kids”. And just in writing that phrase I’ve kind of expressed the unspoken venom and utter lack of empathy the working and middle class have towards beneficiaries in NZ.
How do you change that and get working and tax paying voters to support unconditional income and housing for those that would other wise struggle to get by?

  6. one longs for a (realistic) universal basic income – then all those cruel bastards can be sacked – and the winz real estate turned into community-centres..
that will be a much better use of the assets..

    • UBI would be a basic payment, the lives of the poor/majority would still rely on welfare top ups for food, accomodation, children…as for the UBI, a system viewed as essential by the likes of Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Richard Branson etc all good men who have the best interests of the masses at heart I’m sure…….

      • I’m always sceptical about people who use other people’s name to get there pet theories across.

New Zealand on the other hand has this issue with unfunded care work north of a billion dollars, and will probably never be payed. We need to start pay our way and a UBI is just one payment style.

  7. “…so while old systems are still in place, could they not give some directives to stop any unreasonable and bizarre steps to be taken now?

The rot starts at the top. there’s a lot of firing/ moving sideways to do. Greens were hot on this for a long time… Jac has said culture has to change… so where was all this in the first 100 days???

  8. I think too many people are being impatient after 9 years the big mess isn’t going to be cleaned up in months it will take years and with all the lies and deceit the reviews need to continue so we have a clearer picture of the extent of the problems.

  9. “At some stage, the new Government must stop being bullied by the PSA”

    Pardon?

    The Milquetoasts are bullying???

    Since when?

If staff at WINZ are being overworked – how many actually belong to the PSA? What are their workplace delegates doing? Who ‘minds’ WINZ members at the Wellington level of PSA? When have they spoken out? What, if anything, has been published in the PSA rag?

And – is the PSA making any sort of membership push to help these benighted boffins/front-line pests? When did it start? What success is the recruitment drive having?

Being of a suspicious nature my guess is that union membership is low to ultra low. That the ‘younger generation’ i.e. anyone under the age of 55, whose working years have been spent in the wilderness of neoliberal individualism, has no idea of unionism that isn’t tainted with ‘bad! Commie! Selfish! Plebs only!’ And They Aren’t Like THAT! They’re Proper People dealing with the skivers and scroungers and spongers, using a stick to instill moral values.

Bullying PSA? They must have changed dramatically.

Proper People – the Orthodox and Conformist Good Folk – those people never change. Unfortunately.

And all parties in Parliament are infested with them.

  10. I don’t think you can call them proper people Andrea. I would call them Psychopaths with sadistic principles. No these people are not garden variety proper people.

The only way they get away with it is to ware their nice shiny suits to try and deflect criticism. In some ways they are immoral ones with there evil agendas…

Watch this space I think this department will be closed one day sooner than you imagine…

  11. If voting worked in people’s favour…. it would be illegal.

LOOK AT BIG PICTURE, & OVERALL TRENDS in NZ PAST 40 YEARS.
Does it show life in NZ improving?

    NO.
    IT SHOWS The OPPOSITE.

What makes anybody still take Elections seriously??
Probably short attention spans/too busy to think/too dumb or lazy.

The other day I read about some judge advocating in favour of 16 year olds being allowed to vote.
    WTF
Are 16 yr old children mature enough to have a proper perspective on Life, equipped to discern the difference between marketing spin vs facts & truth? .
    -NO!

Most adults don’t even, which is why they still watch TV & believe in the mainstream Media, even online)
Moreover, schooling for past decades has omitted to teach students how to think independently

Anyway, you can see by his insane suggestion that this Judge KNOWS NZers are screwed & doesn’t care. It suits him very well in fact , since judges live in separate realm alongside with the Elite.

What does this all have to do with WINZ ?

There’s a much bigger picture behind this ( NZ is not in isolation) and the sooner you wake up the better.

(If you are clueless about where to go looking , ask. I’m years ahead and can see where this is all going, & the picture is not good) .
