NATIONAL’S DOUBLE SPEAK: To make unemployment stats drop, Government claims anyone looking for jobs on internet isn’t unemployed

It’s been a shocker of a week for the Government. Bill English was caught out using the wrong costs when he vetoed the extension to paid parental leave. The unemployment stats have been recalculated to claim those looking for jobs online aren’t unemployed. The new environment report was released but didn’t actually tell us anything and despite claiming our tax haven rules were strong the report this week says they are not.

The strategy seems to be to tell NZers white is black and rely on their busy lives to simply hear that sound bite. National deny there is a housing crisis, they deny inequality is a growing issue, they deny climate change is serious, they deny poverty is a problem and when they are not in denial they are manipulating the statistics to fit the hard right idealogical narrative they believe in.

Trying to claim people who are looking for work online aren’t unemployed so that the unemployment rate drops is outrageous. Producing an environmental report that doesn’t really include any risk analysis whatsoever of the environment is a farce. John Key claiming NZ had incredibly strong rules around off shore trusts only to be contradicted by a report saying we don’t.

It is just unbelievable that such out right corruption can still be so popular, which brings us to ask if any of this actually matters to voters?

We saw with Dirty Politics and the mass surveillance lies that voters were prepared to look the other way and vote for Key in huge numbers. The property bubble and the fact so many in the middle class have borrowed half a trillion to speculate means they will forgive Key torturing puppies if it means their inflated sense of wealth doesn’t pop.

The grim reality is that those speculators who are in debt up to the eyeballs  will vote National come hell or high water and that those disaffected missing million voters will need far more from Labour or the Greens in terms of radical solutions to motivate their political participation.

National’s double speak are obvious lies but when you are a desperate speculator mortgaged up to the hilt you don’t care and if you are one of the missing million voters, you stopped listening.

  1. Deceptive whitewash process Martyn, now being used inside MBIE of course, under the cover of “Innovation”

They have an operating manual I was told of how they are instructed how to sugar coat all statistics for Government purposes and propaganda.

We need these corrupt agencies like MBIE to be gutted and returned to the state services and out of private consultants hands.

End result is I work one hour a week and are then called Employed!!!!

If labour had of done this Nactional would have raised the roof!

  2. It isn’t just that: National have also redefined the term “job”.
To National a “job” is just about anything you do when you are not eating, sleeping or playing sport.
Zero hours, voluntary work, casual, call-ons, stand-bys – they are all jobs according to National, but are not real jobs at all.
We can’t work your ghost jobs John.

    • Well Mike they said we are on planet key didn’t they?
That means we are on a parallel world, like Mars?

Maybe these Politicians have been parachuted onto Parliament from the red planet, no wonder us earthlings cant figure out their logic any more?

  3. nothing can save the housing market its well past the point of no return and half a trillion dollars is mass insanity
the longer we kick the can down the road the more sever the restructuring is going to be national have run the country into the ground again . the poor are paying the hardest and are least the responsibly for this mess . when the property market pops we will see thousands of over leveraged home owner demanding a bail out for there greed
i say NO WAY! THIS selfish lot need to take responsibility for there foolishness and debt.

  4. They expect people to harass employers, day in and out, that is if you live in a place with limited transport and reach, and with only so many employers about. So they expect you to go there every week and ask again, and again and again, have you a job for me, I am told to ask, to prostitute myself to you, to get a job, what is your bottom line for pay and conditions so you give me a job, please, beg, beg, beg, I believe in the brighter future, Master.

    • Yes according to WINZ you must spend 8 hours a day, day in, day out job hunting. Chasing every single employment agency , every single job advertised, whether you are suitable for the job or not, you have got to apply for it. Remember you can only turn down three jobs, the forth you got to take whether its part time, casual or whatever. These natz’is live in another universe. Hell if a couple of people working 80 hours a week, cant make ends meet, this country is screwed.

  5. Now that people are considered employed when looking for jobs on the interwebs, will that mean they will no longer receive a benefit?.
I also wonder what is being cooked up while this is used as a distraction .

  6. Those tossers at WINZ would no doubt be including me coming off a benefit as a success story. I left New Zealand because I knew that it was only a matter of time until I ended up homeless without a benefit. WINZ was doing nothing to help me and not giving me my entitlements and I’d had enough. When I phoned up to cancel my benefit they didn’t even ask if I had a job to go to. They just told me I would have a lot of trouble getting a benefit if I decided to try again. Then when I left the country those arrogant fuckers sent me an email telling me I had broken the rules and they were stopping my benefit. I think they do that so they can get out of paying you the week they owe you (or maybe they have changed the law to get rid of that entitlement too). People always say WINZ staff try hard but from my experience they are sociopaths who don’t give a fuck. They kept asking for me to list my barriers to employment but they never helped me when I asked for assistance. As are as I am concerned WINZ staff are evil and whatever happens to them as a result of their arrogance and discrimination is just reward.

    • You are a refugee, it seems, from WINZ harassment.

Yes, to some of us it feels like being kept in a cage or prison without bars around, we cannot escape anyway, there is too much sea to cross, and those on benefits may not be able to afford a one way ticket out, by plane.

Modern day slavery, but what concerns me most is how so many put up with this shit, it is a real, real worry, how submissive and passive so many have become.

  7. This is how it always is at the end of major political epochs; elites, drunk with hubris, using spin and #8 wire to maintain their privilege, all the while deluding themselves that the poor and ignorant are still in thrall to their slippery charms.

They could not be more mistaken.

Never in my life, from the 1960s to now have I seen or felt a more charged atmosphere of discontent. In California, with the Vietnam war protests, there was anger, to be sure, but it was directed at a specific cause, and when the war ended, you could hear a pin drop across America. After Whitlam, there was outrage and then eventually, calm. But this time… our time is different.

Unlike past decades, we have previously unimaginable levels of poverty and hopelessness. A student in the 60’s, 70’s and even early 80’s could be certain things would eventually get better. Now, the great majority of the working poor is certain only that things will likely get worse. This is the difference. We are coming to a Hegelian crisis of global proportions, precipitated by inequality and the zombification of our democratic and financial institutions.

The pressure for change, any change at all is palpable. And it’s coming. It’s coming. Brexit, Frexit, Nexit, then possibly even Texit, Caxit and beyond. When it comes, it will be impossible to predict where it will lead. One thing is guaranteed however, the status quo will be gone forever; gone the way of the Belle Epoque, gone the way of the Anti-Bellum South, gone the way of the Bourbons.

Gone the way of the Czars.
