  1. CB, I think what Evans is implying is that any flag change is outweighed by the fact that the Queen is still our Head of State, and nothing will change until that is addressed.

That’s my take on it… it’s a very subtle message.

  2. I thought it was more that she hasn’t stuck an oar in at all – makes the phony change crowd look even stupider (if that were possible) – and Liz look as if she enjoys the mandate of heaven.

  3. This cartoon is completely ridiculous. We the people do not want the flag changed as the proposed new alternative is utter crap. It has nothing to do with the queen. Canada changed theirs with no interference from her majesty whatsoever. As queen of Canada she would have gone along entirely with what the people of that democracy would have wanted. To imply that her majesty is somehow involved in wanting to retain the exiting flag is entirely fatuous and goes to show how extremely ignorant a lot of us are on constitutional matters and how in fact the Commonwealth operates. It is to be remembered that most Commonwealth countries are in fact republics and her majesty wears her hat only as “Head of the Commonwealth”. Whilst we are in fact a “realm” within the Commonwealth to all intents and purposes we are a “crowned republic” quite capable of determining our own affairs and destiny in the same way as India or Nigeria.

  4. I’ve been thinking that during the visit to the Queen she asked JK what could be done to keep the Union Jack flying in the Southern Hemisphere now that the Australians are going to change their flag.

If you can keep the old flag flying in NZ I promise you a knighthood.

JK said he had a great idea that would ensure that the old flag kept flying.

He would have the country vote , at huge expense, for the old flag by putting up a half-baked design as an option.

He would go on and on about the new flag until a solid majority had heard as much as they could tolerate.

He knew it would alienate him from the public but all he could hear in his head was “Arise Sir John”.

  5. My interpretation of Malcolm’s cartoon here is, the weight of consensus is in favour of keeping the present flag, as indicated by the Queen (representing the NZ ensign) outweighing the alternative.
