Research underlines need for KiwiBuild – Labour Party

New research showing the social and fiscal benefits of homeownership underlines the need for a massive government-backed building programme like KiwiBuild, says Labour’s housing spokesperson Phil Twyford.

The Housing Foundation today released three reports that all point to the overwhelming benefits of shifting people into affordable homeownership.

“Getting people into affordable homeownership is the ultimate win-win.

“The international literature clearly shows homeownership is linked to positive outcomes for people including better educational outcomes, higher employment, better health, and less crime.

“New local research by BERL shows shifting people from state housing to home ownership would save the taxpayer millions of dollars net by increasing taxes paid, and reducing demand for government services.

“This research, sponsored by one of the most respected community housing providers and undertaken by credible independent researchers, is a very welcome contribution to the housing debate.

“Labour is committed to homeownership through our KiwiBuild programme, as shown by our announcement of 400 new houses in the Hutt Valley today.

“It is time for a change of government so Labour can get on with building 100,000 affordable homes to house a new generation of young Kiwi families,” says Phil Twyford.

  1. By the time we get the treasury benches back we will need to reconstruct the Rail system and the ports, and then all SOE policies to serve the people not themselves.

Then provide a shared economic commonwealth for all, so all can share in the wealth of this country again.

    Sound to left?

It is the only way back from the disaster national have left us all in labour so we hope you can live up to this.

  2. Yes the houses definitely need to be built amongst a suite of other things .
Bearing in mind that an ‘affordable home’ for most born and bred Kiwis not relying on hand outs or ‘leg ups’ from parents and prudently factoring in the inevitable rise in interest rates over the next 30 years would be around the $280,000.00 mark .
I heard an Auckland developer the other day on Radio N.Z saying she could build ‘affordable ‘ 65-70sq metre 3 storey walk up apartments , ie ; with no lifts ,(to keep costs down), for $650-$680,000.00 .
I thought I had tuned into the comedy hour … How many human lifetimes does she think it would take before this ‘affordable home’ would be paid off ? Or is that not the plan anymore … just be enslavened to The Banks for 3 lifetimes.
The Ponzi scheme that is N.Zs residential housing market is an absolute and utter disgrace.
The belief that property values should and will always go up has now become entrenched in the Kiwi psyche , so much so that no one is willing to tell the truth.
That being , this market is completely unsustainable and we are heading for a 40 – 50% correction in Auckland.
The Banks are going to have to take a bath and I have no sympathy . Their grubby fingers along with the National Goverment’s treasonous policies are right through the creation of this crisis.
There is no way around the law of averages unless wealthy immigrants from China and India, who together make up nearly half the World’s population, are allowed to keep pouring in unfettered .
And if that happens, then what ?

  3. here I am on repeat…many people, and from the circle of friends I have aged in the 20-40 group, an increasingly large number of people, are simply not ever going to be home owners.
For them ‘affordable’ as a definition is simply ‘NOT’. At the same time there is no way they are ever going to get within cooey of Social Housing…
so why is this group being ignored?
If we want to get brutal about things, and politics is all about appealing to the ‘voting class’, I suspect they could be a strong group in terms of turning out to vote.
The proverbial ‘battlers’, folk with half decent jobs and families, an ‘aspirational’ class, I guess.
On the other side, if we ignore them, its going to get ugly…they are also a group who could well be targeted by National with their ‘blame’ politics…”Look at you struggling, while those ne’er do wells get a nice State House, blah blah blah”
The clock is ticking…Labour should get in there before its too late, and given how lackluster the polls are, they should get in there ASAP

    • This wouldn’t be a problem if elites quite holding wages back. Theyve confinced themselves they are the only ones that should have all the control
