   In August 1998 she was appointed as an Associate Commissioner of the Commerce Commission, becoming Chair in 2003. She was re-appointed as Chair in 2006 until 2009.[3]

   MARKETS: Shadow banking in the spotlight

   Key was elected prime minister of New Zealand last weekend after his National Party achieved a crushing victory over the incumbent Labour government of Helen Clark.

   The timing of his elevation, in the midst of a financial crisis, may be quite prophetic. After all, Key’s rise to prominence in foreign exchange circles came after he struck a rewarding relationship at Bankers Trust with Andy Krieger, a daring New York-based trader who launched a legendary raid against the NZ dollar in 1987.

   Krieger reportedly bet more than the country’s entire money supply against the currency, forcing it down sharply and taking massive profits in what is still described as one of the finest forex plays ever completed.

   Key’s role in this raid is not entirely clear. The timing of his arrival at BT suggests he might not have had a great deal to do with it, but he benefited from Krieger’s continuing interest in the currency, which helped Key lift BT to top of the local currency tables and attract interest from international investment banks.

   New Zealand’s new leader also knows a lot about job losses, having by his own admission earned the reputation of being the “smiling assassin” during his short stint at the Sydney offices of Merrill Lynch in 2001 when he reportedly helped fire some 500 staff.

   He had been through this process before, after Merrills incurred massive losses as a result of the Asian crisis. Key, then head of the bank’s forex operations in London, is credited by former colleagues for his ability to hold a demoralised team together, even while sacking, in his own words “dozens fewer than 100”, a comment that reveals an early talent for political spin.

     It tells a story all on its own for any of us that have ever crossed paths with them.
     I wouldn’t be surprised if John was shitting himself, but in any event it reminds me a bit of 70’s Nu Zull and then into the 80s, then 90s.

     NZ had this real inferiority complex in many ways which enabled the troughers and the neo-libs to take a foothold.
     The British ran the public service (mainly by British expats who’d failed and were just plainly fekkin incompetent back home). Then came that era (Class of ’87 et al) with ‘greed is good’ and all that shit in which the laid back Koiwoi accepted the bullshit that the more people were paid must mean the more competent they were), and now we have the US Empire shoving their cast-offs over here.

     It’s a shame we don’t have a decent 4th Estate because if we did, there credentials and actual achievements and successes (going forward) could be challenged.
     As for Paula R – she’s a fucking abomination when it comes down to it.
     But all that is not to say we don’t have our own Masters of the Universe bullshit artists. There’s a Rennie that’s a prime example …. but then when you actually look at his/the SSC’s existence (and it goes back a while), I really can’t find any reason for its existence. It’s certainly NOT to monitor the compliance/adherence, or to promote public service principles.

     Like I said previously, there’s actually a real opportunity for opposition parties here …. as regards our corporatised Public Service (even if it’s just based on its record in recent years).
