Why allow Trump to harvest data on our migrants?

This is insane…

Trump govt warns NZ of migration ‘risk’, asks embassy to collect data

The US State Department has ordered the US embassy in Wellington to begin collecting information on migration data and “migrant-related crimes and human rights abuses”.

…no, no, no!

Look, we have a had a problem with NZ Governments using mass immigration to prop up GDP and that has led to a legacy of underfunding the infrastructure necessary to cope with that mass immigration, we can all agree on that, but what Trump is trying to get here from us is data to use in his war on all immigration.

It is an isolationist mindset that wants to portray all migrants as a threat to Western values which is utterly immoral and wrong.

We should not participate in any way shape or form in providing Trump with what is in fact a hate campaign against migrants.

We welcome migrant workers in to NZ and they are under our protection as hosts once they are here. Of course there will be some criminality, because migrants are human beings and human beings are fallible and flawed, but that isn’t a justification to view them as the other and scapegoat them.

We need to invest in the infrastructure so that those cultural resentments aren’t given fuel to domestic workers who see their jobs taken by migrant workers, so that we have cultural cohesion, but to target them in the way Trump wants to for evidence in a flawed and hateful view of migrants is totally unacceptable.

We should tell Trump to fuck off.
