Threatening Recreational Fishermen?

‘Champion of the fishing sector’ Shane Jones warns recreational fishers he will ‘strike’ back

Fisheries Minister Shane Jones has called for “mutual respect” from the “powerful” recreational fisheries lobby group, and warned he will “strike” back if anyone strikes him.

Jonesy, Jonesy, Jonesy.

These are Recreational Fishermen who love Fish so much, they are an association!

Do you have ANY idea how passionate a NZ Bloke needs to be to join a fucking association?

We are so laid back as a culture, we are almost horizontal, men willingly joining together to be an association is as close as we get to an active militia.

These aren’t migrant MPs you are shitting on Shane.

These aren’t Environmentalists you are degrading Shane.

These aren’t the nephs you are threatening to get off the couch Jonesy Boy, these are NZ Recreational Fishermen and they are as close to ISIS as we get in New Zealand.

You are threatening them, champ?

You are calling them out?

You are attempting to intimidate them are you?

You who are a pimp for the Commercial Fishing Industry, an Industry that donates so much to NZ First and you?

You are trying to bully actual NZ Blokes who love the ocean and love fishing?

Oh Jonesy, you’ve been sitting on that nice Green Leather too long Jonesy.

They’ll tear you apart love.

Yo, recreational fishermen, the Jonesy has decided to respond to your legitimate concerns about him giving to the Fishing Industry while taking from you and your ability to feed your family and whanau with threats.

He’s calling yo mommas fat and that she can’t catch no fish.

Just saying.

  1. Bully-man-boy, Shame Jones, is now threatening our recreational fishing sector. Surprise, surprise – there are no rules any more – that’s another factor that’s gone out the window with this ghastly CoC mob. I have to ask whether this CoC has even one person like Finlayson – with moral fibre, principles and integrity and in which case who, as they all seem to be tarred and feathered with the same brush. How does an MP get away with ‘warning/threatening’ decent NZ’ers. I don’t get it. All Jones has respect for is the great God, money and power. Yet another vacant, empty shell. Please get rid of this evil flotsam and jetsam NOW.

  2. Yes that little utterance really jarred.
He’s selling out the public and the fishery to commercial interest and actually threatening people who call him on it.
Could you look more corrupt Mr Jones?

This is New Zealand first all over though, they once claimed to represent hunters but voted for Jacindas overreach gun laws, now they selling out fishermen for the big rich powerful commercial fishing lobby.
    It’s not at all surprising.

    • The big powerful fishing lobby donors that donate to NZ First and National. Now that’s a monumental overreach by those two parties, one could say corrupt.

  3. Mr Jones with all that flash speak but when boiled down to it he is just another twat with his nose firmly in the fish bin with his mates from Tallys/Sealord and all those other corporate bastards who feed his well swollen puku.
Going fishing tomorrow Shane like to come?

  4. Jones isn’t good at maths (or indeed much else) but Fish & Game have more paid-up members than all NZ political parties combined. It would give anyone sensible pause – but who would donate to Jones except a deeply unpopular industry that has failed to grow in spite of exclusive access to a littoral fishery the size of Japan’s?

Given the same resources, Japan’s fisheries produced $11.4 billion in 2024, while NZ produced $1.28 billion ($US). They’re just not vey professional, and can only survive through political patronage.

  5. Recreational fishers come from a wide cross-section of NZ blokedom. From aging, middle-class, lefties such as myself in a $1200 kayak and cheap gear, to working-class, Waitakere-man tradies with a $40k boat, a $60k double-cab ute and premium kit. You won’t hear many of them discussing “the enclosure of the Commons” around the boat ramps, but they know it when they see it.

  6. My father’s close friend is a recreational fisherman and I spoke to him about the restrictions in the Hauraki Gulf and about bully-boy Shane Jones. He said that as a recreational fisherman, he and other recreational fishers who have spent a long time, in some cases decades, enjoying and respecting the Hauraki Gulf for its fish, it is clear to them all that commercial overfishing has caused significant depletion in many fish stocks.

The science is clear, and the consequences are visible to anyone who has fished these waters for a long time. However, what he and others struggle to accept is that the burden of the resulting restrictions is falling disproportionately on recreational fishers—people who did not cause the problem, do not profit from it, and have historically taken only a small fraction of the total catch. Meanwhile, the commercial sector that drove the historical depletion is allowed to continue operating, with only marginal adjustments.

These restrictions that heavily impact recreational fishers while leaving commercial scale extraction comparatively intact do not reflect a fair or balanced approach.

To add insult to injury, along comes the commercial fishers bed-mate, Shane Jones who threatens to “punch over” (metaphorical) the recreational fishers association who are standing up to him and raising a fair point. Typical bully-boy, symptomatic of the current CoC.

    • Your fathers friend is correct in his observations on the state of the Hauraki Gulf fisheries. And you are correct in your observation as to the the effects of commercial catches vs recreational catches.

    • I have read many posts on the Daily Blog, however this would have to be the best and most accurate scripted post I have read. Thank you youngsuffrajet, it embarrasses some of the immature and weak rhetoric we see from certain people.

  7. Shane Jones is detestable. He should be no where near the fishing industry or determining the use of marine reserves To think the tax payer paid for this idiot to watch movies with titles like Moby’s Dick.
