Luxon fires back at Hipkins for ‘attack’ on his finances

The Prime Minister has fired back at Chris Hipkins over what he says was an attack on his personal finances.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins criticised Christopher Luxon on Wednesday for making hundreds of thousands of dollars – tax-free – in recent property sales.

“Why should he be able to make more than $600,000 in one year from flipping properties whilst the people who go out and work hard every day for a living pay tax on every single dollar that they earn?”

The Labour Party announced on Tuesday it would campaign on a capital gains tax on property, excluding the family home and farms, at a rate of 28 percent from 1 July, 2027.

Speaking from South Korea at the ASEAN summit, Luxon said comments about his finances were a political diversion.

“I’m aware that they’ve had a pretty rough week, with the capital gains tax – the policy that’s their fourth failure I think in the last two weeks.

“I don’t attack his personal finances, I wouldn’t expect him to attack mine.”

Luxon said the capital gains tax policy was not about him, but about New Zealanders affected by the policy.

But it is actually about you Prime Minister.

It’s about you making $600 000 tax free via speculation.

It’s about you changing the bright light test and then personally profiting from it.

It is about you telling parents who can’t feed their kids to make a marmite sandwich.

It is about you allowing racist policy to take a front seat.

It is about your austerity plans that have seen 73 000 kiwis flee NZ.

It is about you slashing public services.

It is about you claiming every perk available while poor people can’t.

It is about your double standards and the way you have strangled the common good for your donors interests.

It is about you and your ilk running NZ for your personal profit while the people suffer.

Luxon has a glass jaw, and Chippy smashed him in it by bringing up his venal greed.

Kiwis have to stop cutting their Jacinda off to spite their face, your post covid bitterness has been manipulated into supporting rich pricks who are rorting the system for their benefit and the benefits of their crony capitalism donors.

You don’t bow to corporations Kiwi, and yet here you are worshipping at their feet because you hate the left wing person you are having a fight with on social media.

The time for petty bigotry is over, National/ACT/NZF have used culture war malice to distract you from their corruption of our legislative agenda for their donor’s interests.

Take a long hard look in the mirror Kiwi, take a long hard look in the mirror.

Labour’s capital gains tax announcement has certainly dominated recent political discourse.

Some think that it is too timid, others that strategically it hits the right spot, time will tell who is right. Both from a collective good and a political point of view.

What is utterly predictable is the chorus from the right claiming that the policy is the worst thing possible and will completely undermine the economy, even though CGTs are common throughout the western world and perform the very important role of tempering the effects of untrammelled capitalism.

Nicola Willis is among the loudest of voices. She has this uber confidence in the righteousness of what she says. The problem is that when it is subject to any sort of proper analysis it falls apart.

Ever since the policy has been released she has made a number of outlandish claims. Including these.

  2. Tricola says the CGT is punishing hard working investers by making them pay tax on their gains, so does that make income tax punishment for workers.

    • This government never met a worker they didn’t want to kick in the teeth. Willis is bleating on behalf of her donors, which is par for the course with National. They certainly don’t work to further the interests of the average citizen.

  3. Let’s not forget he pleaded to have his “beach house” downgraded so as to pay lower rates plus the $600 000 tax free speculation. The man is no leader as evidenced by his departing Air New Zealand.

  4. Luxon claimed $52,000 a year, of hard earned taxpayer’s money, for using his own Wellington apartment, when Premier House was sitting empty….

Luxon used taxpayer’s money, just to cross the road, using a Ministerial car instead of walking..

He claimed rent money off the taxpayer, for using a building as an electoral office, that he actually
    owns…

He consistently lies without blinking to cover up the
absolute hash that he, Willis, and Seymour have made, of not only the economy , but race relations, infrastructure projects, health snd education…choosing to trot out the tired old falsehood of ‘blame Labour’.

I have spoken to quite a number of business people, both large and small, and they are all saying the same thing….

….It’s way worse than the 2009 world financial crisis …and ….it’s the continuous poor desicions made by THIS government that has lead to the parlous state N.Z. now finds itself in….and …that Luxon is just not up to the task….he needs to go!!

  5. ‘Tricola’, that’s a good one.
‘Hard-working investors’ is a bit of an oxymoron.
If Tricola thinks it’s a bad idea, it must be a good idea.

As for luxon, he suddenly says everything is a political diversion or the opposition is politicising everything. What an idiotic thing to say. He’s right about the diversion bit. He doesn’t want anyone taking too much interest in what he’s up to but at same time, he can’t help skiting about it. He loves being the centre of attentions.
Working people of NZ, not the ‘hardworking investors’, the real working people expected Hipkins to mention the killing luxon is making with property. Hipkins is making things uncomfortable for the Coc-up govt. as he should.

  6. If he was confident about winning the election and delivering a prosperous, growth, growth, growth, NZ economy, he wouldn’t have sold up. He’s not backing himself to win.

    • Very good point…but the main reason he is selling up, i believe, is that he has found out, rather quickly, that running a country is way way way harder and more complex than selling men’s moisturiser and baby products or overseeing a state owned monopoly and wants out…

… As soon as he is either voted out , or dropped, he’s out of here …gone burgers..

    • If he were confident about winning an election and silencing his detractors, he’d call an early election.
He’s definitely not backing himself, so why would we? He knows he’s a silly childish loser.
As Patrize says, prancing about Asia looking for photo opportunities with well-known people, makes him look like a dizzy teenage girl at a concert. That’s the extent of his attention span.
Having no portfolio shows how inept, he knows he is.

    • Hey I’m just watching my back that’s what I’m backing here. Just remember you upstart Labour leader, the saying is ‘You scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours’. On that basis NZAO politics turns into a fine investment on which to spend your time.
Capisce: (Neopolitan,Sicilian for Do you understand)!

    • If you are in the fortunate position of having money to invest you move it around to increase the return .Luxon owned property and he knew if the National plan worked the value of property would drop from the highs caused by Labour. so it was a good plan to sell .
He brings this business acumen to running the country and the seeds of success are starting to work . Jacinda may have brought kindness to the PM job but she had no real world business knowledge and the country suffered because of it.

      • The economy and human ethics have suffered because Luxon does not have anything other than a corporate brain. He has failed dismally and will leave politics a failure at the next election. He has done nothing to improve the lives of the people and his failures as a businessman at Air New Zealand have been exposed.

      • Surely you mean the weeds not seeds of growth because from where I am sitting there are no green shoots in sight

  7. Great article Bomber. Can I add a further “it is about you….” comment?

It is about you letting yourself be pushed around and manipulated by your feral far right wing Trump supporting coalition partners.

  8. OMG this Luxon critter is so in DENIAL, so CORRUPT and such a LIAR – he can’t decipher what we can all see so clearly. Surely changing the bright line test to benefit himself is a huge and dishonest CONFLICT OF INTEREST! Anyone who sees it his way is equally as devious. How can he keep defending himself when the “proof is in the pudding”? He is not fit to be PM of NZ or for that matter of any country. He is a greedy, voracious and ignorant person and it’s not just about his Donors – it’s all about HIM and he is laughing all the way to the bank. Again and again I have said – you can’t take your wealth with you when you die! Your property may be worth nothing if Climate gets you! And Willis whinging and bleating is music to our ears. This airhead needs to go too – she hasn’t got a clue – she is totally devoid of any human or intelligent thought. But of course, Luxon knows his days are numbered but he’s so smug and sorted he believes he will simply fall into another cushy role. You will need all the luck you can get – you blockhead!

  9. “You don’t bow to corporations Kiwi, and yet here you are worshipping at their feet because you hate the left wing person you are having a fight with on social media.”

Fighting is worship? I guess standing against another’s self righteousness could be, on occasion, and the worshipful dance could be showing how you resist bowing to corporations.
I hope that Today took the heat out of hate and that Tomorrow will deliver gamesmanship from out of worship. Tikanga.

  10. ” Yesterday, when talking about his proposed capital gains tax, Labour leader Chris Hipkins pointed out an unpleasant truth about the Prime Minister ”

He made more from flipping houses than he did from his huge prime minister’s salary, as much as a dozen of us would earn in a year. But unlike those dozen median income earners, he didn’t pay any tax on his side-hustle income. It is simply obscene.
Luxon thinks this is unfair, but its not. Luxon is emblematic of a social problem in our country: that the rich are thieves. They steal from us, they do not pay their way, and they write the rules to ensure that that theft is legal. Luxon, a rich-lister worth between $20 and $30 million, is basically a poster boy for what is wrong with our society, a perfect illustration that you don’t get rich (or stay rich) by living honestly. He chisels us at every opportunity, demanding to be paid to live in his own house, demanding cuts to his rates, and now demanding that we all ignore his greed and tax cheating. We should not ignore it. Instead, we should throw this rich prick out on his arse, and tax his capital gains and his wealth so that he pays his fair share and no longer distorts our society. And if he doesn’t like that, he used to run an airline, so I’m sure he knows what to do.

    https://norightturn.blogspot.com/2025/10/luxon-is-poster-boy-for-greed.html

  11. When Willis shows her total disrespect for Barbara Edmonds on the campaign trail like she does every question time in parliament it will be all over for the Nats no matter what they say or do. She is just an obnoxious bitch who thinks she is so much better than anyone else. Mark my words her cutting words will be her downfall.

    • Yes…there’s room for dancing upstairs with Willis…fundamentally stupid…the examples, of which there are many, have now cost the taxpayer hundreds of millions of dollars…never to be seen again.

Why Clusterfuxon, thought appointing her as Finance Minister was a good idea, only serves to highlight how hopeless and clueless and ignorant he is….It’s a case of the blind leading the blind and N.Z is much, much, much, poorer for it on many levels!!

  12. IRD: property purchased with intention to make a profit and later sold, outside of brightline period, is a taxable activity whereby tax must be paid on the profit from sale. It is not classified as a tax free capital gain because the activity is a “property dealing business”. https://www.ird.govt.nz/property/buying-and-selling/when-you-need-to-pay/the-brightline-test

Selling residential property after the bright-line period ends
The bright-line test does not apply if you sell a property outside the bright-line period. But other property sale rules will still apply when you:

    – buy property with an intention to sell it
    – have a pattern of buying and selling or building and selling your main home
    – or a person you’re associated with is in the business of property dealing, developing or building and the property was bought for the business.

  13. I wish that the Left were not practically even stephan with Coc in the polls. Why is that? They should be far far ahead for so many reasons, yet they are not.
