Why a Labour/Green/MP Government is worth fighting for, why a Labour/Green/NZF one isn’t

Put aside the madness of the civil war inside the Maori Party, a Labour/Green/MP Government is worth fighting for (which just adds to the tragedy).

If te Pati Māori Leadership survive the civil war, they can still form a Government, if they don’t, there is no way voters can seriously believe they’ll provide the stability to prop up supply and confidence because they will have proven their egos matter more than the National interest.

A Labour + Green + MP Government could commit to the foundational changes Kiwis are so desperate for, a Labour + Green + NZF Government however would be simply more incrementalism with Winston as the handbrake.

There is so much that could be achieved, which is why it is worth fighting for a Labour/Green/MP Government, but there is also so much to lose if it’s just Winston as the hand break again.

If te Pati Māori Leadership really are toppled by the wounded egos of Doc and the Kapa-Kingi’s, the backlash from voters will be a mix of grief and incandescent rage.

We are so close, so very close to beating this hard right Government with its ant-Māori, anti-Treaty, anti-worker, anti-beneficiary, anti-renter and anti-environment agenda, and yet…

and yet.

The challenge to the te Pati Māori Leadership will happen at the AGM, if the Leadership see down this civil war, we still have real hope for a Labour+Green+MP Government, if they are toppled, they will be ruled out and we will be landed with a meaningless Labour + Green + NZF Government.

Why would the Greens agree to such a toxic outcome? Because it will be simply put to them that if they don’t bow the knee to Winston, they will enable another National/ACT/NZF Government.

There is much riding on the civil war inside te Pati Māori but the possibility of real progress on the big issues matters, which is why we must remain engaged with the process.

Good luck Debbie, good luck Rawiri.

  1. It really comes down to coalition agreements – NZF has neither bullied nor embarrassed the Coalition – were he similarly bound by Labour & the Greens he might prove an asset of sorts. I will never vote for him of course – I’ve not forgotten his lies to The Alliance.

The Māori party are an equally attractive prospect – ie not even slightly – but I might put up with quite a lot to see NZ back on a path to decency and prosperity.

Not holding my breath though – neoliberalism has clearly shot its bolt, and no party is yet enunciating a credible new paradigm.

“The angel of history’s face is turned toward the past. Where we perceive a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it in front of his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise; it has got caught in his wings with such violence that the angel can no longer close them. The storm irresistibly propels him into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress.”

    • The seismic event has already happened as the TPM self explode . The next poll will indicate how the voting public react to the situation now unfolding

  2. You’re presuming that both Labour and the Greens would be willing to repeat Ardern’s mistake. Sipping from the same poison chalice that killed her and Robertson’s aspirations to be a transformative government. I don’t think they would, for the Māori-bashing and trans-bashing alone.

If they’re smart they’ll both rule it out early in the campaign, so Winston can’t play himself off as kingmaker.

  3. The Greens may not have to bow the knee if their share of the vote hits near 20% or overshadows Winston’s 1st. I think the electrette is well aware of the possible outcome with Winston tying up labour hence why a red green split vote is essential if The Maori pati implodes.

  4. Just kick them out and let’s hope the young ones stick with the leadership. All they need to do is look at recent TPM history. Easy. And let’s not overlook the graft and the amount of it, no matter how the Kapa-kingi’s wanna and probably do spin it. Just grow a brain people. And yeah not cool to drag Tarsh’s illness and death into it to explain your graft. Really off. Also stop fucking with the TPM. You were elected to that party and NZ needs it, not you.

  5. Just Labour and greens would be ok ,but if the Maori get working as a unit then they would be a massive asset .At the moment they are losing voters because they are in the grips of a few single minded control freaks .
