Waatea media with the scoop…
Te Pati Māori MP faces suspension
For the last several months, Te Pati Māori have gone from large highs to deep lows. The passing of much-loved MP, Tarsh Kemp, caused a by-election that saw Oriini Kaipara elected. An AGM was to be held but this was delayed due to the passing of Kemp and the ensuing by-election. In the aftermath, allegations surfaced about the behaviour of MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi’s son, Eru, in respect of her office budget and the accusations of an altercation between Mr Kapa-Kingi and a Parliamentary Security staff member – Mariameno Kapa-Kingi is the MP for the seat of Te Tai Tokerau.
Now Waatea can report that at a TE PĀTI MĀORI NATIONAL COUNCIL HUI held last Thursday had four resolutions put:
-
- That the Te Tai Tokerau Electorate Executive be reset by way of a Special General Meeting, on the basis that the Electorate Executive is no longer functioning in accordance with Party requirements and the Kawa.
- That the Te Tai Tokerau MP has seriously breached the Te Pāti Māori Kawa (Constitution).
- That the Te Tai Tokerau MP be suspended.
- That the National Executive develop and recommend the most appropriate process to implement the suspension of the Te Tai Tokerau MP and report back to the National Council.
Waatea understands that all four resolutions were passed by the Members present (Agreed: Tāmaki Makaurau, Hauraki-Waikato, Waiariki, Ikaroa-Rāwhiti, Te Tai Hauāuru) with one Abstenation (Te Tai Tonga).
Comment has been sought from the MP concerned and Te Pati Maori
…this is enormous news and backs up what TDB had argued, that the chances of a Te Tai Tokerau by-election was on the cards.
There is a faction inside Labour who seem more focused on losing the next election and are arguing Chippy should rule the Māori Party out now.
These are people who want to control the losing team rather than lose control of the winning team and their push for Chippy to rule the Māori Party out has been very intense over the last few weeks.
In response the Māori Party leadership are stamping their authority on the Party to ensure their reset and decision to evolve from just an opposition party to one that wants to help Labour and the Greens kick this terrible Government out is serious.
Te Pati Māori leadership had no choice once Eru decided to put his ego before the waka and air the dirty laundry in front of the Marae because the overspending issues were serious.
Te Pati Māori are showing Labour they are prepared to clean house to ensure their rest means something.
From a Left wing perspective, a Labour/Green/Māori Government would be the most progressive since Michael Savage.
A Labour/NZF/Green Government would be a total waste of time.
There Greens can not get caught out again by Winston.
The Greens and Māori Party need to be meeting now and agree on an alliance that sees them negotiate post the election as a united front which would snooker Labour and leave Winston out in the cold.
By making this move to suspend Mariameno Kapa-Kingi, the Māori Party leadership is showing Labour they are prepared to step up to the challenge of being a Party prepared to support a Government rather than a perpetual opposition party of activists.
This is huge day in NZ politics.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

That Mariameno Kapa-Kingi is to be suspended by TPM is indeed the best and only action they could take; she left them with no alternative. She and her son are the authors of her demise. They have given TPM the middle finger and that is unacceptable. But please, TPM don’t let it drag out – nip it in the bud ASAP. The two of them have not given one iota for the feelings or reputation of your party in which case just give her the boot and find a LOYAL and HONEST replacement. They can argue and protest all they like, but we can all see the greed, stupidity and damage this has caused to TPM and the Left. Bring it on, but reach a decision quickly, before any more damage can be done.
Labour would have won Te Ta Tokerau if the Greens hadn’t stood a candidate there in 2023.
A by-election might be the worst option for the left.
The Labour Party have no excuse to try and avoid left wing coalition government and leave this right wing coalition government in place
Honestly I don’t know whether to side with TPM or Eru and Mariameno in this whole spat
I just hope this doesn’t result in another by-election that could be divisive this close to the general
I think the lady always looks smug and self-satisfied in Parliament. Not an endearing trait. Paul Goldsmith tends to be the same. His party should consider dumping him too.
Sure.. Rule out a 10% party in the hope that you can manage a racist 3% party. That’s not politic’s that’s political suicide. I dislike Winston just like the rest of you but reality says.. don’t count him out.
It’s a shame politicians are generally of a certain personality type – self serving and egoistic. Some are not, like Efeso, truely in it for the greater good. Obviously Ferris and Kapa-Kingi are in the former group, in it for themselves and their ego. They fail to realise that they were elected as TPM politicians and they owe allegiance to the party people elected them to. If they were not going to tow the party line and consequently weaken the party, which all of NZ needs in the upcoming election, then they should have run as independents in the first place. That goes for their latest addition. Now is not a time for a coup within TPM.
So much for representing your electorate as an MP. Shut up and follow orders!
Labour needs to count him out if they don’t, they will lose a lot of their voter base like me. Winstone is kicking Māori in the guts many of us don’t want him back, he is also failing to protect our environment. And to make matters worse and he is courting the old red neck mostly Pakeha vote who can’t stand to see our Māori people get ahead. Labour also needs to be patient and give TPM time to sort out their raruraru we still have a year to go before our election anything could happen.
Could not agree more.
Yes, their latest edition (Orini) is showing her political inexperience backing the suspended one (Mariameno) when she needs to stick by the party, not a good start for her.

Totally agree. She should have run as an independent not on the coattails of TPM as she declared her sectarianism immediately. Very very disappointing and in my view fuckin disloyal and stupid. TPM is not meant to be a stepping stone for egos. What is wrong with these people at such a crucial time for the Left.
