Building at scale to meet housing need is important. In 2024, Kāinga Ora-Homes and Communities let 75,000 homes, and community housing providers let 26,000. This is about 4% of the housing stock, well under the OECD median of 6-7%. On the 2023 Census night, 112,000 people were housing-deprived and 5000 were without shelter.
Yet Bryce Wilkinson and the NZ Initiative, without supporting evidence, are restating tired ideological arguments. In a Herald opinion article on October 16, Wilkinson asks whether the state should own social housing, and says that “the market will deliver”.

And if the Michael Johnston mentioned is indeed the Dr Michael Johnston of the New Zealand Initiative, which seems probable to me, then remember he was a member of Stanford’s Ministerial Advisory Group.
And that’s not all. The Charter School Authorisation Board, which approves new charter school, has amongst its members Neil Paviour-Smith. Catherine Isaac, and Elizabeth Rata – all connected to the New Zealand Initiative.
…the Left simply don’t have anything to resemble the sophistication of astro turf right wing mouth pieces promoting their donors interests using Dark Ag money and the faux intellectualism of the NZ Initiative.
They manage this by playing to our collective petty bigotry by baiting Culture War Boomers.
While they promote social media hate algorithms, they quietly push deregulation for their donors and Kiwis fall for it every time because the Fourth Estate have been utterly neutered under this Government.
No one is pointing out these connections in the mainstream media so it goes unchallenged.
