Media Insider: Sean Plunket and The Platform ‘going to war’ with Broadcasting Standards Authority after watchdog claims jurisdiction over online comment

New Zealand’s broadcasting watchdog – set up to monitor the content of television and radio networks – is claiming jurisdiction over Sean Plunket’s online-only company The Platform and preparing to consider a complaint in which he described Māori tikanga as “mumbo jumbo”.

In a confidential draft decision that could have major implications for other online content, including, potentially, some social media videos, the Broadcasting Standards Authority says it has the authority to adjudicate a complaint from a member of the public who took exception to Plunket’s comment.

Plunket, who released the correspondence and draft jurisdiction decision, says the BSA has no such authority under law. He says its approach is “Orwellian” in nature and a threat to freedom of speech.

The BSA has only issued a draft decision on jurisdiction and has yet to consider the actual complaint. It has asked for Plunket’s submission on its draft jurisdiction decision.

Watching Sean Plunkett fight the BSA is like a death cage match between the Nazis and Daleks – you’re not sure who to cheer for.

Firstly, Plunkett is a radioactive hate grifter who has in the past attempted to claim images of starving Gazans were faked, has claimed Māui dolphins were “the Down syndrome kids of marine mammals” that “deserved to die”, has asked if anyone felt sorry for Harvey Weinstein and infamously claimed he was concerned about a mass outbreak of anorexia in Gaza.

Allowing Sean Plunkett to pass judgment on broadcasting standards is like having a panel of lepers judge a beauty contest.

On the other hand, the BSA are a group of noddy do-gooders who are picking the weakest bullshit to try and pull Sean up on.

The complaint is that Sean described Māori Tikanga as ‘mumbo jumbo’ which is the sort of shit your drunk uncle who listens to Reality Check Radio says when half pissed at Christmas lunch because he’s banned from Dinner.

It’s a waste of time complaint made by woke micro aggression policing vegans who believe all heteronormative sex is rape.

Sean and the BSA are two sides of the same arsehole who you can’t stand.

The real issue of free speech in this country is what Talley’s is doing to TVNZ, not this garbage.

  1. Just another dipshit with an ego the size of bus and a superiority complex. It’s in fashion these days, especially when it comes with a complete lack of humility
Broadcasting: One to many, many to many

  2. Plunkett can stop broadcasting on Radio Aotearoa anytime he likes. It’s not like anyone who listens to that station is interested in his trash

  3. Just another right wing troll, trolling a platform attempting to be relevant. Well here’s the thing, of his 9 listeners(I’ve exaggerated, it’s 7) they are all hard core far right extremists. So for the rest of us we simply don’t recognize him in any way, shape or form, so he can say what he likes as he has no interest in anything other than his own ego. He should get a real job. He had to buy the Platform otherwise he’d be on the dole. No one would employ him.

  4. “Sean described Māori Tikanga as ‘mumbo jumbo’”

That’s hardly racist. People say that about religion and spiritual stuff all the time.

    Damn Right Mark!
I say it about ‘Socialism with Chinese Characteristics’ . You know – that stuff dreamed up by the Chinese Communist Party.

  6. In the end successful societies are based on esteem for science and the scientific method.

Any elevation of religion or spirituality in the public sphere should be utterly rejected.

In private life it is a completely story entirely.

So the only legitimate world view for public policy is the scientific materialist world view.

That does not mean other world views are illegitimate – it simply means they should be confined to the private domain – indeed that is what spirituality is – its finding your own path, not a path compelled by public policy.
