Research over the weekend shows scientists deeply concerned about massive methane seeps occurring in Antarctica, and last week, The ministry of the environment and Stats NZ’s warned New Zealand’s oceans are warming 34% faster than the global average and that $180bn worth of housing is at risk of flooding yet this Government are focused only on protecting their Corporate Farmer mates!
The Climate Change Commission recommended methane cuts of 35-47%. However, documents released under the Official Information Act revealed pressure from lobby groups like Federated Farmers – whose ex-President Andrew Hoggard is now an ACT Party MP – for the Government to establish a separate panel to review the methane target and that panel has surprise surprise landed on a much weaker methane target.

In an open letter shared with the Financial Times, 26 climate scientists from around the world warned that New Zealand’s proposed new methane targets risk setting a dangerous precedent. This Government revived in June the 100% Pure tourism brand, in light of the methane decision, that tourism advert is nothing but greenwash bullshit!
Dr Bryce Edwards highlights that the recent local council elections had lobby groups like ‘The Local Government Business Forum’ — a coalition including Business New Zealand, the New Zealand Initiative, and Federated Farmers — openly calling for voters to elect candidates with “commercial and financial acumen” and a “pro-growth and pro-development mindset”, part of the problem here in NZ is that business lobby groups can mask their polluter interests with dark Ag money that the wider electorate can’t see.

I will get in before the usual suspects who claim that the NZ dairy industry is world-leading for its efficiency. It is often said that 628 litres of water are required to produce 1 litre of milk. I just checked Google, and Woolworths has water at 77 cents per litre. 627 times .77= $483.56 to produce 1 litre @ 5% MFsolid @ $10/Kg = $0.50 for the milk. It would be more efficient to export the water instead of putting it through a cow.
We then have nitrate pollution in Canterbury, which is mostly caused by dairy farming yet they have not offered to fix the problem. Methane is another problem but profit now is considered more important than having a sustainable future so that is being ignored as well.
